Some cats seek more contact when their owners return after a longer absence, but that does not prove they experience a human-like feeling of missing someone. In the small study that directly compared absence lengths, researchers found no evidence that the tested absences were experienced negatively. Cats vary, and changes such as persistent vocalizing or destructive behavior are worth investigating rather than treating as proof of separation anxiety.
What cats do when owners return
A small home study compared two absence lengths
Eriksson, Keeling, and Rehn observed 14 privately owned cats at home after their owners had been away for 30 minutes and four hours. At reunion, the cats purred and stretched more after the four-hour absence. Near the end of the separation, the researchers found no difference in the cats’ measured behavior between the two conditions. The study, published in 2017, interpreted the reunion behavior as a possible sign of renewed motivation for social contact—not evidence that the cats had felt distressed while alone.
What the behavior cannot tell us
Purring is not a simple happiness meter: cats can purr in different contexts. In this study, the researchers discussed it as a possible contact- or care-soliciting signal. More broadly, observable behavior can suggest that a cat values social interaction, but it cannot establish that the cat experiences “missing” an owner in the same way a person might. The authors put the distinction plainly: “Thus it is possible that cats ‘miss’ their owner, but there is no evidence from the time intervals used in this study that this is experienced negatively.”
What attachment research can—and cannot—settle
A controlled study of 20 cat-owner pairs found more vocalization after an owner left than after a stranger left in some comparisons. But the researchers did not find a broader pattern they considered sufficient to interpret the bond as secure attachment. They argued that methods suited to the cat-owner relationship are needed. The 2015 study is one reason not to treat a single behavior—or a single test—as a definitive measure of how a cat feels about its owner.

Some cats show behavior that merits attention
What one owner-reported survey found
A 2019 questionnaire survey classified 30 of 223 cats (13.45%) in its respondent sample as possibly having separation-related problems. That result reflects the survey’s owner reports and criteria; it is not a population-wide prevalence estimate or a veterinary diagnosis. The survey also could not establish whether the reported signs occurred only when the cat was alone or more generally when the owner was absent, including situations where another person might still be at home.
Signs are reasons to investigate, not a diagnosis
Owners in the survey reported signs including inappropriate urination or defecation, destructive behavior, excessive vocalization, and anxiety or inactivity. These behaviors can have more than one explanation. A sudden or persistent change deserves attention, but it does not by itself prove that a cat has separation anxiety. For severe, ongoing, or abrupt changes, ask a veterinarian for advice tailored to your cat.

What you can conclude about your own cat
- Notice the pattern, not just the reunion. Record what happens before you leave, while you are away if you can observe it, and after you return. A greeting alone does not show what the cat experienced during the absence.
- Look for changes over time. Repeated vocalizing, destructive behavior, or elimination changes are more useful reasons to investigate than one isolated incident.
- Consider the environment without assuming a cure. The survey found associations involving how often and how long cats were left and a lack of enrichment such as toys. Those associations do not establish that leaving a cat alone caused the behavior, or that toys prevent or treat it. Enrichment can offer stimulation, but it is not a guaranteed solution.
- Get individualized help when needed. A veterinarian can help assess behavior changes and consider possible causes; do not diagnose a problem from a checklist alone.
What the studies do not establish
The duration study tested only 30-minute and four-hour absences, with 14 cats observed once at each duration. It cannot show how every cat responds, what happens during longer absences, or define a universal maximum time a cat can safely be left. Nor do these findings support dividing cats into fixed “independent” and “attached” types. The clearest conclusion is narrower: some cats show more contact-seeking behavior after a longer tested absence, while the available evidence does not reveal whether they feel a human-like sense of missing their owners.
