Do not give your cat human stomach medicine, pain relievers, or other medication unless a veterinarian specifically tells you to. For mild, brief symptoms in a cat that otherwise seems well, keep fresh water available and ask your veterinarian whether small portions of an easily digested diet are appropriate. Vomiting or diarrhea can have many causes, so home care is not a substitute for veterinary attention when symptoms persist or warning signs appear.
What to do for a cat with mild stomach upset
“Upset stomach” may mean vomiting, diarrhea, or both; it is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Vomiting in particular can have multiple causes, as VCA Animal Hospitals explains.
- Leave fresh water available. Water is important to help prevent dehydration during vomiting care, according to VCA. Do not force your cat to drink.
- Ask a veterinarian what to feed. A veterinarian may recommend a prescription diet or a specific, easily digested home-cooked diet served in small, frequent portions. If the cat improves, portions can be increased gradually and normal food reintroduced over several days. The right plan depends on the cat’s condition, so do not treat this as a universal recipe or start a diet plan without veterinary guidance. See VCA’s vomiting guidance.
- Do not force food or drink. If your cat will not eat or drink, or seems unwell, contact a veterinarian rather than trying to make it take something.
When to contact a veterinarian
Seek prompt veterinary care if vomiting occurs with any of these signs, or if you suspect your cat swallowed a toxin or foreign object. VCA lists these symptoms as reasons for prompt care; Cornell also advises prompt evaluation for several of them.
- Blood in the vomit
- Lethargy, weakness, or loss of appetite
- Abdominal pain, fever, or dehydration
- Vomiting with diarrhea
- Increased thirst or changes in urination alongside vomiting
- Possible toxin or foreign-object ingestion
If your cat otherwise seems well but keeps vomiting for more than one to two days, VCA advises veterinary care. Cornell also recommends evaluation for cats that vomit more than once a week or vomit alongside lethargy, weakness, decreased appetite, blood, increased thirst, urination changes, or diarrhea. Read VCA’s vomiting guidance and Cornell’s vomiting guidance.

Do not give Pepto-Bismol, antacids, anti-diarrhea medicine, pain relievers, supplements, or other medication on your own. Cornell’s advice is: “Remember: never give your cat medications without first consulting your veterinarian.” It identifies aspirin, acetaminophen (Tylenol), and ibuprofen among common poisoning causes. The cited guidance does not establish a safe at-home dose for these products—or for other human medicines. See Cornell’s common cat hazards guidance.
