Keep flea and tick prevention consistent through the year, ask your veterinarian which products suit your pet and local parasite risks, and check pets that go outdoors for ticks every day. Use only products labeled for that animal: never apply a dog flea or tick product to a cat.

Do pets need flea and tick prevention year-round?

Generally, yes. Fleas can survive year-round when an animal host is available, according to the CDC’s flea-prevention guidance. The Companion Animal Parasite Council says ticks are active throughout the year, and Cornell’s canine guidance also recommends year-round prevention. Local conditions vary, so ask your veterinarian what parasites are common where you live and how to maintain an appropriate plan.

Follow the product label’s directions and keep up with its schedule. Regular bathing, brushing, and checks can help you notice fleas or ticks; limiting outdoor time and contact with wild or stray animals can also reduce exposure, as the CDC advises.

How do you choose a flea and tick product safely?

There is no single product form that suits every pet. Ask your veterinarian to help select an option for your animal’s species, size, health history, and likely exposure. Cornell’s comparison covers dogs; it is not a product recommendation or regimen for cats.

  • Species and weight: Check that the label specifically covers your pet’s species and weight. Do not assume that a product suitable for one animal is safe for another.
  • Form: Options for dogs include collars, topical treatments, and oral products. Choose a form you can use correctly and consistently.
  • Schedule: Check how often a dose must be given or a product replaced, and follow the label’s timing.
  • How it works: Products can differ in whether they repel ticks or prevent attachment, or kill parasites after attachment. Ask which function is appropriate for your pet’s risks.
  • Practical fit: Consider your pet’s medical history, ability to tolerate the product, bathing or water exposure requirements on the label, and cost per dose.

Never use a dog product on a cat

Cats can be extremely sensitive to chemicals in parasite products. The CDC advises asking a veterinarian before applying tick prevention to a cat. The American Veterinary Medical Association’s 2022 external-parasites brochure warns: “Never use a dog flea or tick product for cats because the results could be deadly.” Use only a cat-labeled product your veterinarian considers suitable.

How often should you check pets for ticks?

Check pets that go outdoors every day, especially after they have been outside. The CDC’s advice is direct: “Check your pets for ticks daily, especially after they spend time outdoors.” Ticks can be difficult to see in long or dark fur, so feel carefully as you examine your pet.

Pay particular attention around and inside the ears, eyelids, under the collar, under the front legs, between the toes, between the back legs, and around the tail. If you find an attached tick, remove it promptly.

What should you do if you find an attached tick?

For a tick embedded in a cat’s skin, Cornell advises using protective gloves and tweezers or a tick-removal device. A fine-tipped pair of tweezers or a purpose-designed remover can help you grasp the tick close to the skin.

  3. Pull straight outward in one motion. Avoid twisting or crushing the tick.
  4. Place the tick in isopropyl alcohol, dispose of the gloves, and wash your hands.
  5. Watch the site for redness, swelling, or discharge. Contact your veterinarian if your cat later develops weakness, lethargy, or reduced appetite.

Cornell’s detailed instructions are cat-focused; for any pet, contact your veterinarian if you are unsure how to remove a tick or have concerns afterward.

What should you do if fleas are already in your home?

Treat the pet and the environment together. Fleas have a life cycle that makes eradication difficult, and the CDC says moderate to severe infestations can take months to control. Its flea-control guidance recommends starting home treatment at the same time as treatment for pets.

How can you reduce tick exposure in your yard?

Yard work can reduce tick habitat and contact, but it does not replace daily checks or veterinarian-selected prevention. The CDC recommends mowing grass, clearing leaf litter and tall grass or brush, and trimming vegetation to let in more sunlight. Near wooded areas, it describes a three-foot-wide wood-chip or gravel barrier between the lawn and woods.
