Use the calculator with measurements in the units shown. The adult formula is for horses over two years old; it should not be applied to foals, weanlings, or yearlings.
How to measure your horse
- Stand the horse square. Use level ground and let the horse stand relaxed.
- Measure heart girth. Pass a flexible measuring tape around the barrel behind the shoulders and elbows, where a saddle girth would sit. Keep it snug without pulling hard enough to distort the measurement.
- Measure body length. Measure from the point of the shoulder to the point of the buttock.
- Use inches in the calculator. Record both measurements in inches; do not mix inches and centimeters.
How the estimate is calculated
For adult horses over two years, the formula is:
Weight (lb) = heart girth (in)² × body length (in) ÷ 330

For example, if a horse’s girth is 72 inches and body length is 72 inches, the estimate is 1,131 pounds: 72 × 72 × 72 ÷ 330. The result is approximate, not a scale reading.
A metric version commonly uses weight (kg) = girth (cm)² × length (cm) ÷ 11,880. Agriculture Victoria publishes a rounded denominator of 12,000 instead. Because the published coefficients differ slightly, use one equation consistently and match it to the units entered.

Use an age-appropriate formula
The adult denominator is not appropriate for every age. Merck Veterinary Manual gives separate pound-based equations for adults, yearlings, and weanlings:

| Yearling | Girth² × length ÷ 301 |
| Weanling | Girth² × length ÷ 280 |
These equations use girth and length in inches. Ontario publishes a distinct equation for foals aged 0–60 days; use a foal-specific method or veterinary guidance rather than substituting an adult equation.

How accurate is a horse weight estimate?
A girth-and-length formula is generally a better estimate than judging weight by appearance, but it remains an estimate. Extension Horses reports correlations of 0.87 for girth alone and 0.90 for girth plus length, citing Carroll and Huntington (1988). Correlation is not percentage accuracy and does not promise a particular error range for an individual horse.
Weight tapes use girth alone. Extension Horses says a tape estimate can be off by as much as 100 pounds in either direction; Merck says tapes tend to underestimate. The cautions also vary by horse type: Extension Horses flags pregnant mares, foals, miniature horses, and very fit racehorses, while Merck advises against tapes for miniature horses, donkeys, and draft horses. A tape should therefore be treated as a rough estimate or a way to track trends, not as a precision tool.

Visual guesses can be misleading too. In a study summarized by Extension Horses in 2020, 77 farm managers and 62 veterinarians estimated horses’ weights; 87.5% of guesses were low by an average of 186 pounds, while 12.5% were high by an average of 92 pounds. Nearly 60% underestimated all five horses. These are results from that study, not a prediction for every owner or horse.

For weight tracking, repeat measurements consistently. When using a scale, Extension Horses recommends zeroing it and weighing under consistent feeding and watering conditions so that changes are easier to interpret.

Weight is not the same as body condition
A weight estimate can help you follow changes in size, but it does not by itself establish whether a horse is at a healthy body condition. Assess body condition with appropriate veterinary context. University of Minnesota materials also describe girth-to-height and neck-to-height ratios as screening measures; these ratios are not substitutes for a scale weight.
