Carna4 Cat Food Review: Chicken vs. Fish, Ingredients, and Nutrition

Carna4’s Chicken and Fish dry cat foods share 40% minimum protein and 17% minimum fat guarantees, but differ in animal proteins and some guaranteed nutrients. Learn how to compare them and what the company’s AAFCO statement does—and doesn’t—show.

Carna4 offers two dry cat foods, Chicken and Fish, in 2 lb and 4 lb bags. Both list 40% minimum crude protein and 17% minimum crude fat, but those guaranteed as-fed figures do not by themselves establish how a particular cat will do on the food. The key distinction is the animal-protein mix: Chicken starts with chicken, chicken liver, and eggs; Fish starts with herring, perch, eggs, and salmon. Carna4 says both recipes meet AAFCO nutrient profiles through analysis of finished food, not feeding trials. Here’s what that means—and what to weigh before choosing either recipe.

What is Carna4 cat food?

Carna4’s official cat food page lists Chicken and Fish recipes in 2 lb and 4 lb bags. The company describes them as quick-baked and cool air-dried nuggets. It describes Chicken as made with Canadian fresh chicken, chicken liver, eggs, and USDA Certified Organic sprouted seeds; Fish is described as using fresh wild-caught herring and perch with the sprouted seed mix.

Both are dry foods. Their ingredients include animal proteins, eggs, sprouted seeds, and other plant ingredients. The presence of plant ingredients alone does not establish that a food is unsuitable for a cat, just as fresh or whole-food ingredients alone do not prove better clinical outcomes.

What is in the Chicken and Fish recipes?

Recipe Ingredients listed first Other listed ingredients
Chicken Fresh chicken, chicken liver, eggs Ground organic sprouted barley seed, herring, ground fava beans, sweet potato, ground organic sprouted flaxseed, sprouted lentils and peas, potato starch, kelp, cranberry, sea salt, sunflower oil, nutritional yeast, natural baking soda. Carna4 counts 17 ingredients on its product page.
Fish Herring, perch, eggs, salmon Ground organic sprouted barley seed, ground fava beans, sweet potato, ground organic sprouted flaxseed, sprouted lentils and peas, potato starch, kelp, cranberry, sea salt, sunflower oil, nutritional yeast, natural baking soda.

The ingredient lists offer a practical starting point for comparing the animal proteins and any ingredients your cat has previously reacted to. They do not establish that either recipe will suit a cat with a suspected or diagnosed allergy; discuss an elimination diet or other dietary change with your veterinarian.

Chicken vs. Fish: what differs nutritionally?

The official guaranteed-analysis sheets show the following values. They are guarantees by weight on an as-fed basis—not typical laboratory results or dry-matter values. Minimums and maximums are not interchangeable with exact amounts.

Is Carna4 cat food complete and balanced?

Carna4 says its recipes are intended to meet AAFCO Cat Food Nutrient Profiles for all life stages. In its January 2022 response to WSAVA questions, the company said it does not conduct AAFCO feeding trials; it tests finished products by analysis against nutrient-profile requirements.

Those are different kinds of evidence. Nutrient-profile analysis checks the food against specified nutrient levels. A feeding trial evaluates a food when animals are fed it under a defined protocol. Carna4’s disclosure supports describing the recipes as formulated to meet the profiles by finished-product analysis; it does not support saying the recipes were validated in AAFCO feeding trials.

The company’s response also says the food is baked at Bio Biscuit Inc., a family-run bakery in Quebec, Canada; that batches are held and tested before shipment; and that third-party testing covers pathogens, toxins, and heavy metals. These are manufacturer disclosures, not an independent audit finding.

How to interpret the digestibility claim

Carna4’s product page claims a 94%–95% digestibility score for each formula. The page reviewed does not give the sample size, protocol, date, or underlying report, so the figure is best treated as a company-reported result, not proof that the food resolves digestive or skin problems.

How calorie-dense is it, and how should you feed it?

Carna4’s Chicken product page lists 4,400 kcal/kg, or 407 kcal per 8-fluid-ounce cup. Cats.com reported 126 kcal/oz for Chicken and 128 kcal/oz for Fish in its review updated January 12, 2026. These figures come from different source presentations; check the current package for the recipe you buy and use its feeding guidance to measure portions. Cats.com characterized both foods as dry, low in moisture, and calorie-dense.

Carna4 recommends introducing the food gradually, starting with one part Carna4 to four parts of the old food. Its schedule is:

The company says portion needs vary with age, size, breed, environment, and activity, and recommends monitoring weight. Keep clean drinking water available, measure food rather than assuming free-feeding suits every cat, and account for calories from other foods fed alongside it.

Carna4 says its nuggets can be softened with water at a ratio of one part water to four parts dry food. It also advises against serving Carna4 and raw meat in the same meal; that is the brand’s guidance, not a universal veterinary rule. For a cat with a diagnosed condition, food allergy, urinary problem, or weight-management need, ask your veterinarian to help choose an appropriate diet.

What does an independent review say?

In a review updated January 12, 2026, Cats.com writer Kate Barrington, with Mallory Crusta listed as fact checker, gave Carna4 an overall 7.7/10 (B+) under Cats.com’s own scoring framework. That is the publisher’s review rating, not a scientific nutrition score. Cats.com said the reviewer independently bought both recipes, examined and tried them with her cats, who appeared to like them with differing enthusiasm. The review also reported customer comments from cats that refused the food or struggled with nugget size; these are reported experiences, not a guarantee of how another cat will respond.

Cats.com quoted Dr. Scott Morton, president of Mortec Scientific, as saying: “Carna4’s sprouted seed mixture appears to work synergistically with the other ingredients to maintain their nutritional levels throughout the cooking process.” The accessible source for the statement is Cats.com’s review; it is not an independently checked primary interview transcript.

Cats.com also reported finding no evidence of a Carna4 cat-food recall in its review research, as of that review. This is a time-bound finding from that publication, not a guarantee against future recalls.

Which Carna4 recipe should you choose?

  • Consider Chicken if its chicken-and-egg protein profile fits your cat’s history and preferences. Its listed guaranteed calcium, phosphorus, EPA, and DHA minima differ from Fish as shown above.
  • Consider Fish if the herring, perch, egg, and salmon protein mix is a better fit for your cat’s known preferences or ingredient history. Its guaranteed-analysis sheet lists higher minimum calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, and DHA than Chicken, while Chicken lists a higher minimum EPA.
  • For either recipe, take the nugget texture and size, measured calorie intake, water intake, and your cat’s response during a gradual transition into account. Ingredient preference cannot substitute for a veterinary diet plan when a medical need is involved.
