A pet’s birthday can be a lively playdate, a quiet afternoon together, or a special treat made from familiar food. Let your pet’s temperament and dietary needs set the plan. If you don’t know the birth date, celebrate the day they joined your family instead.
Start with the kind of celebration your pet enjoys
ASPCA guidance is to make the gathering as large or small as the pet prefers. Watch how your animal responds to visitors and activity, and give them the option to step away.
For a social dog
A backyard or dog-friendly park playdate can be a good fit for a dog who enjoys other dogs. Keep the guest list to familiar, compatible companions rather than assuming a crowd will be fun.
For a dog who prefers familiar company
Invite one known dog, or celebrate with just your household. A favorite walk, a game of fetch, or time with a new toy can make the day special without a party.

For a cat or a pet who wants quiet
Set up a cozy corner with soft blankets and favorite toys. If guests or noise are part of the celebration, provide a comfortable room away from the activity, with familiar toys, so your pet can retreat whenever they choose.
Choose a treat that fits your pet’s diet
A homemade birthday treat is optional. ASPCA offers recipes for dog biscuits made with oat flour, unsweetened applesauce, pumpkin puree, and xylitol-free peanut butter, and cat treats made with drained tuna, cornmeal, rice flour, catnip, and water. Let baked treats cool completely before offering them.

- Shari Lewis' beloved and classic lamb is adored by dogs
- Includes a fun pink-trimmed party hat, and patterned paws

If your pet eats a specialized diet, ask your veterinarian before introducing a new food. A simple alternative is to shape some of your pet’s regular food into a treat, keeping the ingredients familiar.
Keep treats modest
The American Veterinary Medical Association’s 2023 brochure, Your Pet’s Healthy Weight, recommends that treats account for less than 10% of a pet’s daily calorie needs and that food be adjusted accordingly. Calorie needs vary; ask your veterinarian what is appropriate for your pet. Treats are not required for a celebration: affection, play, or a favorite outing can take their place.

Keep party food out of reach
Do not share chocolate or sugar-free candy and other products containing xylitol; ASPCA identifies both as dangerous to pets. Keep human party foods secured, and ask guests not to feed your pet without your permission.
Pick a gift or activity with safe use in mind
ASPCA suggests gifts such as squeaky balls, interactive puzzles, new bowls, and personalized bandanas. You could also give your pet extra cuddles, gentle brushing if they enjoy it, a nap together, or a shelter donation in their honor.

Match toys and chews to the individual pet
Choose a toy or chew suited to your pet’s size and chewing habits. Supervise dogs while they chew, and remove worn items or anything that starts to break into pieces. Swallowed chunks can cause choking or intestinal obstruction. DIY enrichment items also need supervision; take them away if your dog tries to eat them. ASPCA emphasizes that guardians should understand each dog’s chewing habits and preferences in its position statement on dog chews and treats.

A costume or bandana is only a good birthday accessory if your pet tolerates it. Clothing should not restrict movement, vision, or breathing, and small dangling or chewable pieces can be choking hazards. Remove the outfit if your pet seems distressed or starts behaving unusually; a photo-free celebration is perfectly fine.
