Is 4health Cat Food Good? An Independent Look at the Cats.com Review

Cats.com gives 4health a C overall: value scores well, but its featured indoor kibble has nutritional trade-offs. Recipe, label, and life-stage details matter.

4health may be worth considering if you want an affordable cat food, but whether it suits your cat depends on the specific recipe. In its review updated January 12, 2026, Cats.com gave the brand 5.7/10 overall (34/60, a C grade): it rated price and customer experience relatively well, while scoring ingredient quality, species-appropriateness, variety, and recall history lower. Those are Cats.com’s editorial ratings—not a clinical assessment or an official product certification. Its featured dry-food recipe has notable nutritional trade-offs, and the review viewed a wet chicken recipe more favorably.

What the Cats.com score means

Cats.com assesses 4health across six categories. Its review, by Mallory Crusta, was last updated January 12, 2026; the site describes her as an NAVC-certified Pet Nutrition Coach. The ratings below belong to Cats.com’s scoring system and should be read as one editorial assessment, not a veterinary verdict.

Category Cats.com score What the review indicates
Species-appropriateness 5/10 Mixed assessment; the featured kibble’s carbohydrate profile and plant ingredients were concerns.
Ingredient quality 5/10 Named animal ingredients were positives, while several plant ingredients drew criticism.
Variety 5/10 The review considered the range available but rated variety in the middle of its scale.
Price 8/10 Affordability was one of the brand’s stronger points.
Customer experience 8/10 Customer comments included praise for value and acceptance, alongside complaints.
Recall history 3/10 The score reflects historical recalls discussed in the review; it does not establish current recall status.
Overall 5.7/10 (34/60), C Cats.com’s combined editorial grade.

Customer comments are anecdotes, not controlled evidence that a food caused a particular outcome. The review describes both cats enjoying the food and owners reporting refusal or gastrointestinal problems after a switch; an individual cat’s response cannot be predicted from those comments.

Who makes 4health, and where is it sold?

4health is Tractor Supply’s private-label brand. The official 4health website describes it as developed for Tractor Supply and says the company works with manufacturers such as Diamond Pet Foods. Cats.com identifies Diamond Pet Food as the manufacturer. Cats.com also reports that ingredients are primarily sourced from the United States, with some from France, Belgium, and New Zealand, and that folic acid, taurine, and possibly other ingredients come from China; that sourcing breakdown is the review’s account, not an independently established origin list.

Tractor Supply said in a 2025 company announcement that it introduced 4health in 2010 and expanded it later that year to dry cat food and wet dog food. The announcement said the brand then had more than 140 products and formulas. The official sales channels named by the brand and Tractor Supply are Tractor Supply and affiliated Petsense stores. Cats.com mentions limited Amazon availability, which should not be mistaken for an official full-range retail channel.

The reviewed line included Original, Grain-Free, Untamed, and Special Care products. The official cat-food archive also lists dry, urinary, Untamed, wet, and kitten categories. Product lines can change, so use the package and current product listing for the recipe actually under consideration.

Ingredients and analysis

For 4health Grain-Free Indoor Adult Cat Food, Cats.com lists chicken and chicken meal first, followed by chickpeas, peas, turkey meal, powdered cellulose, lentils, chicken fat, natural flavor, and fish meal, among other ingredients. It considers the named animal ingredients and chicken fat favorable, but criticizes chickpeas, peas, powdered cellulose, and lentils. The current Tractor Supply product page lists a closely named Grain-Free Indoor Adult Chicken formula with a recipe beginning chicken, chicken meal, chickpeas, peas, turkey meal, ground Miscanthus grass, and lentils. Ingredient lists can change; compare the package in hand with the listing.

Tractor Supply lists these guaranteed-analysis values for that formula. Guarantees are label minimums or maximums, not a full nutrient analysis.

The product page says the formula “is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Cat Food Nutrient Profiles for maintenance.” That is the page’s wording; it does not say the food is “AAFCO certified.” The statement identifies adult maintenance, so check life stage and any individual dietary needs rather than assuming it applies to every cat.

What Cats.com calculates for this recipe

For the featured dry recipe, Cats.com calculates dry-matter protein at 35.56%, fat at 14.44%, fiber at 8.89%, and carbohydrates at 41.11%. These are the review’s calculations for this recipe, not brand-wide values or independent laboratory results. Cats.com’s concerns about the food include its carbohydrate content, moisture, fat, and the contribution of plant ingredients.

How the reviewed recipes compare

Cats.com’s review grades three examples. They are not a complete ranking of every 4health formula, and the review’s assessment of one dry food should not automatically be applied to all wet or dry recipes.

Recipe reviewed Format Cats.com grade
4health Grain-Free Indoor Adult Cat Food Dry C−
4health Grain-Free Whitefish & Potato Formula for Adult Cats Dry C−
4health Grain-Free Chicken Recipe in Broth for Cats Wet B+

The review’s more favorable assessment of the wet chicken recipe supports a recipe-by-recipe approach: compare the precise ingredient list, guaranteed analysis, life-stage statement, and calories rather than treating the brand name as a nutritional profile.

What it may cost—and how to compare fairly

For a hypothetical average 10-pound cat, Cats.com estimated daily costs of about $0.16–$0.24 for dry recipes and about $1.62 for wet food, using the prices and feeding assumptions in its review. These are review-reported estimates, not current quotes. It listed $32.99 for the featured indoor recipe at Tractor Supply when the review was written; that is not a current price guarantee.

For a useful comparison, calculate the cost for the amount your cat would actually eat, using current package prices and the recipe’s calorie information. Also account for whether you are comparing wet with dry food and whether each formula fits your cat’s life stage and needs.

  • Compare the exact recipe and package size, not only the brand.
  • Check ingredient list, guaranteed analysis, calorie density, and nutritional-adequacy wording together.
  • Use your cat’s daily calorie needs and actual portion size to compare daily costs.
  • Consider acceptance and transition tolerance; owner comments cannot predict an individual cat’s response.

What the review says about recalls

Cats.com reports two historical recall events involving 4health: in 2012, all 4health food made at Diamond’s Gaston, South Carolina facility was recalled over potential Salmonella contamination; in 2013, several cat food brands, including 4health, were recalled over potentially insufficient thiamine levels. These are historical events as described by Cats.com. They do not by themselves show that a current recall exists or that products are presently unsafe. The sources cited here do not independently establish current recall status.

How to decide whether a 4health recipe fits your cat

Start with the cat, then assess the formula. A retail label such as “Special Care” is not the same as a veterinarian-prescribed therapeutic diet. If your cat has a diagnosed condition or needs a therapeutic food, ask your veterinarian before choosing a retail formula.

  1. Confirm the intended life stage and purpose. Read the nutritional-adequacy statement on the current package or product page, and ensure it matches your cat’s needs.
  2. Assess the exact formula. Review ingredients, guaranteed analysis, moisture, and calories for the specific wet or dry recipe—not a different 4health product.
  3. Compare real feeding cost. Use current local price and the daily amount appropriate for your cat, rather than relying on an older review estimate.
  4. Watch the transition. Introduce a new food thoughtfully and monitor appetite and stool. If you are concerned about a reaction, contact your veterinarian.
  5. Check current details. Product formulations, availability, and recall information can change; consult the current label, retailer listing, and relevant current notices.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
