Give it space, a quiet place to retreat, and time to approach on its own. Affection may grow as the dog settles in, but it should never be forced.
Why might a rescue dog hide or avoid cuddles?
A new home brings unfamiliar people, sounds, routines, and spaces. Some newly adopted dogs hide while they adjust; the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) notes that a dog may also initially eat or drink less. Fear can have several possible contributors, including limited socialization, frightening experiences, or genetics, according to the Humane Society of Utah.
Hiding by itself does not establish that a dog was abused, has a particular trauma history, or will always dislike affection. The dog may also be uneasy with a specific kind of approach. For example, some dogs find it frightening when a person leans over them to pet them; Cornell recommends sitting down and letting the dog choose whether to come closer.
How to tell when a dog wants space
Look at the whole dog and the situation rather than treating any one signal as a diagnosis. Possible signs of fear or stress include:

- Hiding, moving away, or trying to escape
- Turning the head or body away, freezing, or holding a lowered posture
- A tucked tail, lip licking, panting, or trembling
- Growling or snapping
If the dog withdraws, freezes, or becomes tense as you reach toward it, stop and give it room. AAHA’s guidance for reducing animal fear is to “Move at the animal’s pace.”
What to do when your dog avoids cuddles
Let the dog control contact
Stop reaching or hugging when the dog turns away, retreats, freezes, or otherwise appears uncomfortable. Let it leave rather than following, chasing, cornering, or pulling it out of hiding. Cornell behavior specialist Dr. Pamela J. Perry advises that owners should never force a dog to confront fears head-on.

Offer a retreat that stays undisturbed
Set aside a quiet spot where people and other pets will not bother the dog. A crate with comfortable bedding in a quiet location is one possible setup; Cornell notes that covering a wire crate with a blanket can make it more den-like. A crate is optional: if your dog seems uneasy in one, provide a different retreat instead. The useful test is whether the dog can choose to use the spot and appears able to relax there.
Make home life predictable
Keep a calm, consistent routine as the dog becomes familiar with its surroundings. Use a gentle voice and avoid forced greetings, punishment, or pressure to accept touch. AAHA describes the “3-3-3 Rule”—three days, three weeks, and three months—as a rule of thumb for adoption adjustment, not a guaranteed timetable for an individual dog.

Reward voluntary, comfortable steps
If the dog is comfortable taking food, offer small, valued rewards for calm behavior or choosing to approach. For a situation the dog fears, introduce it gradually and only at a level that does not trigger a fear response, pairing it with something the dog values. Do not use food or repeated exposure to lure the dog into contact it is trying to avoid.

AAHA advises contacting a veterinarian if a newly adopted dog’s reduced eating or drinking continues for more than a day or two. If the dog is not settling or shows unwanted behaviors, consult a veterinarian and a certified canine behavior consultant. If aggression is present, the Humane Society of Utah recommends professional help; a positive-reinforcement trainer experienced with fearful dogs may also be appropriate.
