Start with a quiet, dog-proofed place where your new dog can rest and retreat. That may be an open bed, an exercise pen, a crate, or a secure room; a crate is optional, not a requirement. Choose the arrangement your dog can use comfortably, then adjust it based on what you observe.
Should you get a dog bed or a crate?
Choose for the dog’s comfort and the household’s safety, rather than assuming every newly adopted dog needs the same setup. An open bed offers a resting surface without enclosing the dog. A crate provides more containment, which may help some dogs settle or help with supervision and travel preparation when introduced positively. A pen or secure room can offer a bounded retreat with more room to move.
Whatever you choose, the surrounding area still needs to be safe. A bed does not prevent access to loose objects, open exits, or other hazards. Cornell’s guidance on moving home with a dog recommends a quiet, secure area and pet-proofing as part of helping a dog adjust.
Compare the practical options
| Setup | Openness and containment | What to check | Main caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Open bed | Most open; no physical containment | Quiet location and a suitable size | The room must be made safe separately. |
| Crate | Enclosed; more containment | Room to stand, turn, and lie down or stretch; appropriate material and durability | Do not persist if the dog shows significant confinement distress. |
| Exercise pen | Bounded and generally more open than a crate | Stable setup, adequate space, and a dog-proofed area | Consider escape and chewing risks. |
| Quiet room | Most room to move; containment depends on doors or gates | Secure exits, hazards removed, familiar items, and a calm location | It requires effective dog-proofing. |
No single option is established as best for every newly adopted dog. The useful test is whether the space is safe and whether your dog can relax there.

How to choose and size a crate
If you choose a crate, fit matters more than buying one to grow into without adjustment. Cornell’s crate guidance and VCA’s crate-training overview describe a functional fit: the dog can stand naturally without ducking, turn around, and lie down comfortably; VCA also notes room to stretch.
A divider can reduce the usable area of a larger crate for a growing puppy. A house-trained dog using a crate for supervised home management may benefit from enough extra room to stretch. Cornell identifies size, material, and durability as key selection considerations.

Choose a crate material for the dog and use
- Wire: Durable and often foldable. Cornell notes it may be partially covered while leaving one or two sides open.
- Plastic: Has solid sides, but can be more cumbersome to store.
- Fabric or mesh: Light and foldable, but less durable and potentially unsuitable for puppies or dogs that chew.
What if your new dog is scared of the crate?
Introduce a crate gradually and build positive associations; do not force the dog to stay inside to prove that it is safe. Some dogs experience substantial stress with confinement. Cornell advises against leaving a dog crated alone when it is excessively barking or vocalizing, pacing, panting, eliminating, or drooling. Those signs call for a different plan, not longer forced confinement.
A larger exercise pen, pet sitter, veterinarian, or qualified trainer may be appropriate depending on the dog and situation. A crate should not replace exercise, play, toileting, or other natural behaviors. If the dog is more comfortable with an open retreat, use a dog-proofed room or pen instead.

Where should your new dog sleep or rest?
Set the resting area somewhere quiet where people will not continually disturb the dog, and make sure the dog can access it as a retreat. Cornell recommends familiar bedding and toys when available, a quiet food and water area, pet-proofing, and familiar mealtimes and outdoor routines. The Wisconsin Humane Society’s new-dog guidance also advises providing water, a bed, toys, enrichment, and a safe space suited to the dog’s needs.
Let the dog choose to use the space rather than making every interaction happen there or forcing the dog into an enclosure. The American Animal Hospital Association’s new-dog checklist recommends an accessible quiet safe space and notes that adopted adult dogs need time to explore and build a relationship over weeks before being left alone.

Choose bedding with chewing safety in mind
Use a bed or mat that fits the resting area without restricting movement. A dog’s bedding habits may not be known at first: PetMD’s crate-comfort guidance reports expert advice that some dogs chew and ingest bedding. Supervise early use, and avoid leaving easily shredded plush bedding unattended until you know how the dog behaves. For a dog that shreds plush items, a simpler mat may be a better starting point.
The available guidance does not establish one universally best bed shape, filling, fabric, cooling design, orthopedic label, or waterproof treatment. If your dog has a medical or mobility concern, ask a veterinarian for help choosing bedding.
