Give your rescue dog a quiet place to retreat, a predictable routine and time to explore at their own pace. Keep the first days calm, let the dog choose when to approach, and adjust your plan to what you observe; a crate is optional, not a requirement.
Prepare a quiet home base before your dog arrives
Choose one low-traffic area where your dog can rest without being disturbed. Set out water, food and a bed or mat; familiar bedding or other belongings may help if you have them. A quiet room, a bed in a protected corner or a familiar crate can work. What matters is that the dog has a safe retreat, not that you buy a particular product. The ASPCA’s adoption tips and VCA Animal Hospitals’ moving guidance both recommend providing a comfortable place to rest.
Make the area safe before bringing the dog home. Secure cords and other chewable hazards, remove poisonous plants, and check doors and windows. Use a gate or closed door to keep the dog out of rooms they are not ready to explore. The ASPCA’s moving-with-your-pet guidance recommends pet-proofing and helping pets get used to a home gradually.
What should you do during the first days?
Keep care calm and predictable
Keep meals, bathroom trips, rest and interaction as consistent as you can. Let your dog watch the household and approach people when ready. Avoid crowding, forced greetings and punishment. Ask everyone in the home to leave the dog alone while they are eating or resting.

Let the dog explore one area at a time
Once your dog seems ready, allow supervised exploration of another room, then expand access gradually. Keep unsafe or unready areas closed. A dog who hangs back does not need to be coaxed through the whole house; let their comfort guide the pace.
Set clear expectations for children and visitors

How should you introduce a rescue dog to other pets?
Resident dog
Do not expect two dogs to become comfortable simply by sharing a room. VCA Animal Hospitals recommends managed introductions; meeting in a neutral location and taking leashed walks together can be useful early steps. Cat
Start with separation and controlled exposure. Do not let the dog chase the cat or force a close encounter. Keep interactions supervised, give each animal a way to retreat, and seek professional help if either animal appears unsafe or persistently distressed.

Should you use a crate, a gated room or an open resting spot?
Choose the arrangement that safely contains your dog while allowing them to rest undisturbed and, when appropriate, explore gradually under supervision. A crate helps some dogs but makes others more anxious. A gated room or a protected bed area may be a better fit. These are options to assess by observing your individual dog, not interchangeable rules.

When can a newly adopted dog be left alone?
Do not assume your dog can manage a normal workday alone as soon as they arrive. VCA Animal Hospitals advises: “It is best to avoid leaving your dog alone in your new home for at least one to two weeks.” That is VCA’s guidance, not a guaranteed timeline for every dog. VCA recommends waiting until the dog is settled in your presence, then increasing absences gradually. How long will it take a rescue dog to settle in?
There is no fixed deadline. The ASPCA describes an informal “3-3-3 Guideline”: the first three days may feel overwhelming, the following three weeks may bring decompression and early settling, and adjustment can continue beyond that. It is a general framework, not a scientific measurement or a promise that every dog will follow the same schedule. VCA likewise notes that dogs vary and some take longer to acclimate after major changes. Let your dog’s behavior—not a calendar—set the pace.
