Comb your long-haired cat’s tail gently every day as part of its regular coat care. Use a long-toothed metal comb or a suitable brush, work slowly through small sections, and stop if your cat shows discomfort. A loose tangle may be manageable at home; a dense, extensive, painful, or skin-close mat needs help from a veterinarian or experienced groomer. The available veterinary and cat-care guidance covers long-haired coats generally, not a separate tail-only technique.
How to groom a long, bushy tail
- Choose a calm moment. Make grooming a regular, positive routine. Let your cat get used to the tool, and use rewards if they help your cat stay comfortable.
- Check the tail first. Look for loose hair, small tangles, debris, irritated skin, or signs that the area is sensitive. There is no established tail-specific number of strokes or special technique; follow your cat’s coat and tolerance.
- Comb gently. Use a long-toothed metal comb or a brush suited to long hair. Move slowly through the coat in small sections. If the comb catches, do not yank or force it through.
- Pause when needed. Stop if your cat resists, seems painful, or becomes distressed. Forcing the process can make grooming harder and risks hurting your cat.
- Assess any snag. A small, loose tangle may be gently teased apart if your cat tolerates it. Do not treat a dense mat as an ordinary knot.
Which comb or brush should you use?
A long-toothed metal comb or long-toothed brush is a suitable starting point for long hair and minor tangles. Different styles work for different coats, so prioritize a tool that passes through your cat’s coat gently and that your cat accepts. The available guidance does not establish a superior brand, blade, or tail-specific product.
What to do about mats
Mats can sit close to the skin, so pulling at them or trying to cut them out can cause injury. VCA Animal Hospitals’ guidance for long-haired cats says, “Never use scissors to cut a mat off.”
- Small and loose: You may gently comb or tease the tangle apart if your cat remains comfortable. Stop if it does not yield easily.
- Large, widespread, close to the skin, or painful: Contact a veterinarian or experienced groomer rather than trying to remove it yourself.
- Irritated skin or a cat that will not tolerate handling: Ask a veterinarian for advice. A veterinarian may use sedation when necessary to remove mats without pain.
When repeated matting may signal a health issue
If your cat’s coat starts matting more often or they stop grooming as usual, discuss the change with a veterinarian. Age-related loss of flexibility, reduced mobility, pain, or other health problems can make self-grooming difficult. Cats Protection notes that an unkempt coat in an older cat may be associated with pain, including joint or mouth pain.
