About the Purosangue Orientale

Purosangue Orientale, also called Puro Sangue Orientale or PSO, is an Italian horse breed established by a royal decree on 19 September 1875. The decree created a stud book for the breed. Its development drew on Arabian horses bought by Italian government emissaries from Bedouin tribes in the Levant and Mesopotamia. From 1864, those horses were brought to Sicily, with many intended for the Royal Remount Station in Catania. The breeding program served the goal of improving cavalry remounts. Carlo Guarmani contributed expertise: he was born in Italy, grew up in the Middle East, spoke Arabic and spent 16 years traveling in parts of the region. The account of the breed’s origins places the purchased horses in the Syrian Desert and describes them as coming from Asia and Arabia. Purosangue Orientale breeding in Italy began before the establishment of Crabbet Park Stud in 1878.
