This is a small, lively companion dog with a much bigger personality than its body suggests. Chorkies are often affectionate with their people, alert around strangers, and quick to announce anything unusual with a bark.
They can suit apartment living, but they are not automatically easy or low-maintenance. Their small size brings practical concerns: fragile bones, dental disease, possible tracheal problems, and a higher risk of low blood sugar during puppyhood. Coat care, house-training, socialization, and alone-time training also deserve serious attention before bringing one home.
What is a Chorkie?
A Chorkie is a mixed-breed dog produced from a Chihuahua and a Yorkshire Terrier. You may also see the names Yorkiechi and Chiyorkie. Unlike a Chihuahua or Yorkshire Terrier, a Chorkie has no official breed standard and is not an AKC-recognized breed in its own right.
That matters because there is no guaranteed Chorkie appearance, size, coat, or personality. Even puppies from the same litter can look and behave differently. One may have a short Chihuahua-like coat, while another has the longer, finer hair associated with a Yorkie. Parent breeds can suggest possibilities, but they cannot predict an individual puppy with certainty.

Chorkie size and appearance
Chorkies are usually very small. A veterinary-reviewed PetMD profile says many full-grown Chorkies are no more than about 8 inches tall and weigh around 7 pounds, but these are general estimates rather than official limits. A mixed-breed dog can fall outside them, especially when the parents differ in size or build.
For context, the AKC Chihuahua standard specifies a weight of 6 pounds or less, while the Yorkshire Terrier standard generally places adult weight at no more than 7 pounds. A Chorkie may inherit a combination of either parent’s proportions.

The Yorkie has a continuously growing, hair-like coat, while Chihuahuas may have smooth or long coats. A Chorkie with more Yorkie-like hair may need much more brushing than one with a short Chihuahua-type coat.
Chorkie temperament
Expect a small dog with energy, confidence, and a strong interest in what is happening around the home. Chorkies commonly inherit the Chihuahua’s alertness and the Yorkshire Terrier’s terrier-like boldness. Many are loving with their families but cautious or vocal with unfamiliar people.

Barking is one of the most realistic challenges. A Chorkie may bark at visitors, hallway noises, other dogs, wildlife outside the window, or anything it considers unusual. Boredom, insufficient socialization, and long periods alone can make the problem worse. Reward quiet behavior, teach a reliable “quiet” cue, and manage triggers instead of shouting over the dog.
Some Chorkies become intensely attached to one or two people. If left alone for long stretches, they may bark, chew, pace, or have difficulty settling. Alone-time training should begin gradually: give the dog a safe resting area, leave for brief periods, and increase duration only while the dog remains calm. A small dog that follows you everywhere is not necessarily comfortable being alone later.
Breed labels do not determine personality. Genetics, early handling, socialization, training, home life, and pain or illness all affect behavior.
Are Chorkies good with children and other pets?
A Chorkie may be a poor match for a home with very young children. Its body can be injured by being dropped, squeezed, stepped on, or handled roughly, even when the child means no harm. Small dogs can also react defensively when frightened or hurt.
If children and a Chorkie live together, an adult should supervise every interaction. Teach children to sit on the floor, let the dog approach, avoid picking it up, and leave it alone while eating or sleeping. Do not leave a small dog and a young child together without supervision.
The same caution applies to larger or rough-playing dogs. A friendly large dog can injure a Chorkie accidentally during play. Introductions should be controlled, and the Chorkie should always have an escape route and a protected resting space.
Exercise and apartment living
Chorkies can live comfortably in an apartment, but square footage is not a substitute for exercise and enrichment. They still need daily opportunities to walk, sniff, play, learn, and interact with their people.

Useful activities include:
- Short walks suited to the dog’s age and fitness
- Indoor fetch with a lightweight toy
- Food puzzles and scatter feeding
- Brief obedience sessions
- Trick training and scent games
- Safe play with appropriately sized dogs
Several short sessions may work better than one demanding workout. Avoid forcing a tiny dog to keep up with long runs or rough play. Watch for fatigue, limping, coughing, or reluctance to continue. A bored Chorkie may bark, chew, or invent its own activities, so mental exercise is as important as physical exercise.
Training and socialization
Chorkies can learn quickly, but terrier independence and stubbornness may make inconsistent training frustrating. Use rewards such as treats, play, and praise. Punishment can increase fear and barking without teaching the dog what to do instead.
House-training
House-training may take patience because a toy-size dog has a small bladder. Take a puppy out after waking, eating, drinking, playing, and sleeping, and provide frequent opportunities between those events. Supervise closely indoors and reward elimination immediately in the correct place.
If outdoor access is difficult, discuss an indoor toilet area with your veterinarian or trainer. Do not punish accidents after they happen; the puppy will not connect delayed correction with the earlier behavior.
Socialization
The first 16 weeks are an important socialization period. With veterinary guidance, calmly expose a puppy to people, household sounds, surfaces, car rides, gentle handling, grooming tools, and healthy, appropriately vaccinated dogs. Socialization should be gradual and positive, not an overwhelming parade of unfamiliar experiences.

Ask your veterinarian how to balance safe exposure with local disease risks before the puppy has completed its vaccination series. Continue socialization beyond puppyhood so the dog does not lose confidence in unfamiliar situations.
Grooming a Chorkie
Grooming depends almost entirely on the inherited coat.

| Mixed texture | Check frequently for knots, especially behind the ears, under the legs, around the collar, and in the armpits. |
Hair around the eyes may need careful trimming so it does not irritate the eye or obstruct vision. Keep nails short, examine the ears regularly, and introduce brushing and handling with treats while the dog is young.
A short haircut can reduce tangling, but it does not remove the need for grooming. If a long-haired Chorkie is clipped very short, protect it from cold weather because it has less coat insulation.

No. No dog is completely hypoallergenic, including a Chorkie. Allergens come mainly from proteins in dander, saliva, and other biological material—not simply from visible hair.
A Chorkie may shed relatively little if it inherits a Yorkie-like coat, but low shedding does not guarantee fewer allergy symptoms. If someone in the household has allergies, spend time with the specific dog before adoption and assess the reaction rather than relying on the mix’s name or coat description.

Chorkie health problems
A Chorkie can inherit health risks from either parent. Mixed-breed status does not automatically make a dog healthier, and there is no single Chorkie health profile that applies to every individual.
Patellar luxation
Patellar luxation occurs when the kneecap slips out of its normal groove. It is common in small dogs, including Chihuahuas and Yorkshire Terriers. Watch for intermittent limping, a skipping or “bunny-hopping” gait, or a clicking knee. Mild cases may be monitored, while severe cases can require surgery.

Tiny mouths can become crowded, and retained baby teeth can trap food and plaque. Over time, periodontal disease can cause painful gums, bone loss, loose teeth, and tooth loss.
Daily brushing with dog toothpaste is ideal. If that is not possible, clean the teeth as often as the dog will tolerate and arrange regular veterinary dental examinations. Never use human toothpaste. Ask your veterinarian to check for retained baby teeth and discuss removal when appropriate.
Tracheal collapse
Both parent breeds have increased risk of tracheal collapse. A recurring, dry cough that sounds like a goose honk is a warning sign. Coughing may worsen with excitement, heat, humidity, exercise, stress, or eating and drinking. Contact a veterinarian rather than assuming the cough is harmless. Using a harness instead of putting pressure on the neck may be advisable, but it does not replace diagnosis and treatment.
Patent ductus arteriosus
Patent ductus arteriosus, or PDA, is a congenital heart defect in which a fetal blood vessel fails to close after birth. Both parent breeds are considered at increased risk. A veterinarian may detect a heart murmur during a puppy examination. Early correction generally offers the best outcome before heart failure develops.

Toy-breed puppies can develop dangerously low blood sugar, particularly during the first six months. PetMD recommends that Chorkie puppies generally receive three or four meals a day, with the exact schedule set with a veterinarian.
Weakness, extreme lethargy, tremors, poor coordination, collapse, or seizures are emergencies. Keep the puppy warm, do not force food or liquid into a weak or unconscious dog, and contact an emergency veterinarian immediately.
Eye and cardiac disorders
Parent-breed health organizations recommend screening for patellar, cardiac, and eye problems. A puppy’s routine examination is important, but it does not replace documented screening of the parents or guarantee that a puppy will never develop disease.

There is no official Chorkie health-testing package because the cross has no standardized national breed protocol. A responsible breeder should still be willing to identify both parents and provide documented results, especially for:
- Patella evaluation
- Cardiac examination
- Ophthalmologist eye examination
- Relevant DNA tests recommended for the parent breeds by a veterinarian or parent-breed health organization
You can search the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals database for public records. A CHIC number shows that a dog completed the screenings recommended by its parent breed club and that results were made public; it does not mean every result was normal.

Be cautious of sellers who advertise “teacup Chorkies.” “Teacup” is not an official size category. Selecting for extremely small puppies can increase fragility and may be associated with additional health and welfare problems.
Chorkie lifespan
There is no reliable, standardized lifespan study specifically for Chorkies. General parental figures are approximately 14–16 years for Chihuahuas and 11–15 years for Yorkshire Terriers, so an individual Chorkie may fall within a similar broad range.
Those numbers are not a promise or a guaranteed average. Genetics, dental care, body condition, preventive veterinary care, accidents, and the treatment of disease all affect longevity.
Chorkie buyer and adopter checklist
- Ask for veterinary records, vaccination history, and parasite-control information.
- Confirm the identities of both parents and request their documented health-screening results.
- Ask how the puppy has been handled and socialized, including exposure to grooming, household sounds, people, and other dogs.
- Get a realistic adult-size estimate based on both parents, not a guarantee based on a marketing label.
- Confirm that the puppy is eating reliably and has normal energy and coordination.
- Ask for written terms covering health responsibilities, returns, and what happens if you can no longer keep the dog.
- Plan frequent meals during the toy-breed puppy stage according to your veterinarian’s instructions.
- Schedule a veterinary examination soon after adoption and bring all records to the appointment.
Adoption groups and shelters may also have Chihuahua, Yorkie, or small-dog mixes that need homes. Ask about the dog’s medical history, behavior around children and dogs, alone-time tolerance, and grooming needs. A foster-to-adopt arrangement can be particularly helpful when the dog’s adult temperament is still developing.
