The best senior dog food is not automatically the bag with the biggest “senior” label. In the United States, AAFCO does not currently recognize a separate senior-dog nutrient profile. Its established profiles are for growth and reproduction, adult maintenance, and all life stages; AAFCO reported in February 2026 that a workgroup was exploring a senior life stage, but no senior profile had been adopted.
For most healthy older dogs, the sensible default is a complete-and-balanced adult-maintenance food with calories suited to the dog’s body condition, enough protein to help preserve muscle, and a texture the dog can comfortably eat. Medical conditions—including kidney disease, heart disease, diabetes, dental disease, and unexplained weight loss—can change that recommendation substantially.

Best for: generally healthy senior dogs whose owners want a mainstream, age-specific food with strong label information.
Hill’s Science Diet Adult 7+ is formulated for mature dogs aged 7 and older. The manufacturer states that animal feeding tests using AAFCO procedures substantiate the food as complete and balanced for adult maintenance. Its product page also provides calorie information and feeding directions by body weight, which makes it easier to adjust portions as an older dog becomes less active.

This is a good default rather than a universal winner. A senior dog that is gaining weight may need fewer calories; a thin dog losing muscle may need a different energy or protein strategy. The feeding chart is a starting point, not a prescription.
Hill’s recommends changing over seven days. Mix increasing amounts of the new food with decreasing amounts of the old food, and slow the process if loose stool, vomiting, or food refusal develops.
Best size-specific option: Purina Pro Plan AdvantEDGE Senior Support+
Best for: owners who want separate senior formulas for small, regular, and large dogs.
Purina sells Pro Plan AdvantEDGE Senior Support+ in Small Breed, regular, and Large Breed versions. The relevant product pages state that AAFCO feeding tests substantiate the foods as complete and balanced for adult maintenance. Size-specific options can be useful because calorie density, kibble dimensions, and feeding amounts do not suit every dog equally.

Purina markets these formulas for cognitive, immune, mobility, and digestive support. Those are manufacturer claims, not proof that the food is superior to every other senior formula. The more concrete reasons to consider it are the AAFCO feeding-test statement, the available size variations, declared calories, and detailed feeding directions.
Best large-breed choice: Royal Canin Large Aging 8+
Best for: large dogs weighing 56–100 pounds that are over 8 years old.
Royal Canin Large Aging 8+ is specifically labeled for senior large-breed dogs in that weight and age range. The manufacturer states that it meets AAFCO nutrient profiles for adult maintenance.

The formula also provides glucosamine and chondroitin guarantees. Royal Canin identifies these as nutrients that are not recognized as essential by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles. They may be relevant to the product’s intended purpose, but the food should not be confused with a therapeutic kidney or heart diet simply because its marketing discusses support for those systems.
Royal Canin also sells breed-specific senior foods, such as Dachshund Adult 8+. A breed-specific label does not automatically make a formula nutritionally better for a mixed-breed dog.
Best lower-cost mainstream option: IAMS Healthy Aging
Best for: owners looking for a widely available senior formula at a generally lower price than many specialized veterinary or premium-brand foods.
IAMS Healthy Aging Adult Dry Dog Food is marketed for older dogs and lists fiber and prebiotics for digestion, antioxidants, L-carnitine, and nutrients for bone and joint support. IAMS states that it is complete and balanced for adult dogs.
The current product page recommends a four-day transition. IAMS’s broader senior-dog guidance recommends five to seven days—or longer for sensitive dogs—so use the instructions on the specific bag you buy. Product formulations and directions can change.
How to choose a senior dog food
1. Start with the nutritional adequacy statement
Look for a statement saying the food is “complete and balanced” for adult maintenance. It should say that it is formulated to meet the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for maintenance, or that AAFCO feeding tests substantiate it for adult maintenance.
FDA explains that a complete-and-balanced food must either meet an AAFCO nutrient profile or pass an AAFCO feeding protocol. An ingredient list, “natural” claim, “premium” badge, or attractive marketing language does not establish nutritional adequacy.

WSAVA also cautions that ingredient lists can be misleading when used alone. They do not tell you enough about ingredient quality, digestibility, formulation expertise, or manufacturing controls.
2. Compare calories, not just the word “senior”
Many older dogs become less active and gain weight. Others lose weight or muscle because of dental pain, illness, or reduced appetite. Check the food’s calories per cup or can, then monitor the dog rather than following the bag blindly.

- body weight and body-condition score;
- waist and rib coverage;
- muscle over the spine, shoulders, and hips;
- daily activity;
- appetite, stool quality, and mobility; and
- your veterinarian’s findings.
WSAVA distinguishes body-condition scoring, which assesses fat, from muscle-condition scoring, which detects muscle loss. An overweight dog can still be losing muscle, so both should be checked.
3. Do not lower protein just because a dog is old
“Senior” does not mean “low protein.” Merck Veterinary Manual notes that older dogs may become less efficient at metabolizing protein and may need sufficient—or sometimes increased—dietary protein to maintain their protein reserves and muscle mass. Healthy older dogs are not known to develop kidney disease simply because they eat a higher-protein food.
A dog with diagnosed kidney disease is a different case. A renal diet involves decisions about protein, phosphorus, calories, hydration, and laboratory results. UC Davis notes that insufficient protein can also be harmful in dogs with renal disease. Do not choose or reject a renal diet based on the protein percentage alone; make the decision with your veterinarian.
4. Consider kibble size and dental comfort
Some older dogs manage dry food normally. Others have painful periodontal disease, missing teeth, or an oral mass that makes hard kibble difficult to eat. Ordinary kibble should not be treated as a substitute for veterinary dental care.
If chewing is painful, a dog may do better temporarily with wet food, kibble softened in water, or a veterinary dental diet selected for the dog’s condition. A sudden preference for soft food, dropping kibble, bad breath, drooling, or chewing on one side warrants a dental examination rather than simply buying a different flavor.

5. Compare wet and dry foods correctly
Crude-protein percentages cannot be compared directly between dry and canned foods because moisture changes the numbers. Dry food commonly contains about 10–12% moisture, while canned food commonly contains about 75–78%.
Use this calculation:
Dry-matter percentage = 100 − moisture percentageDry-matter nutrient percentage = (as-fed nutrient percentage ÷ dry-matter percentage) × 100For example, a canned food with 8% protein and 78% moisture has 22% dry matter. Its dry-matter protein percentage is approximately 36.4%: 8 ÷ 22 × 100. This does not by itself prove that it is the right food, but it allows a fairer comparison.
What “senior” on the bag does—and does not—mean
Because there is no adopted AAFCO senior nutrient profile, companies have considerable freedom in how they formulate and market senior foods. One senior product may have fewer calories, another may emphasize joint ingredients, and another may simply offer a smaller kibble or a different nutrient balance.
That is why the label’s adult-maintenance adequacy statement, calorie content, feeding directions, manufacturer transparency, and fit with the individual dog matter more than the age claim by itself.

- “AAFCO has a senior-dog standard.” Not currently. AAFCO is exploring a senior life-stage profile, but it has not adopted one.
- “Every senior dog needs low protein.” False. Older dogs may need adequate or increased protein to help preserve muscle. Kidney disease requires an individualized veterinary plan.
- “The first ingredient proves the food is best.” Ingredient order alone does not establish quality, digestibility, safety, or nutritional completeness.
- “Grain-free is healthier for an older dog.” There is no verified general benefit. FDA has received reports of non-hereditary dilated cardiomyopathy associated with both grain-free and grain-containing diets and has not established a simple causal explanation.
- “Dry food cleans a senior dog’s teeth.” Ordinary kibble is not a replacement for dental examination, cleaning, or treatment.
How to change foods safely
- Check the new food’s adult-maintenance adequacy statement and calories.
- Begin with a small proportion of the new food mixed into the current diet.
- Increase the new food gradually according to the product’s label—often over four to seven days.
- Watch for vomiting, diarrhea, refusal to eat, itching, or marked gas.
- Slow down the transition if digestive signs appear. Contact a veterinarian if symptoms are severe, persistent, or accompanied by lethargy or dehydration.
- Recheck portions after the transition. A different calorie density means the same measuring cup may no longer be appropriate.
When a senior dog should see a veterinarian before changing food
Ask for veterinary guidance before switching a dog with kidney, heart, liver, gastrointestinal, urinary, or diabetic disease. The same applies to unexplained weight loss, repeated vomiting or diarrhea, a major appetite change, difficulty chewing, excessive thirst or urination, or noticeable muscle loss.
For a healthy older dog, arrange regular examinations and ask the veterinarian to assess both body condition and muscle condition. Food cannot correct an undiagnosed disease, and a change in diet should not delay an examination.

Do senior dogs need less protein?
Not automatically. Older dogs may need sufficient or increased protein to help maintain muscle. Dogs with kidney disease need an individualized diet plan based on diagnosis, bloodwork, phosphorus, calories, hydration, and other factors.
At what age should a dog eat senior food?
There is no single cutoff for every dog. Many products use age 7 or 8, but small, medium, and large dogs age at different rates. Use the product’s intended age range as a guide and discuss the change during a routine veterinary visit.
Is wet food better for older dogs?
