When choosing the right food for your dog, it is important to consider two things:
#1 The size of your dog
Size is an important factor when considering what dog food is right for your dog, as different-sized dogs have different physiological needs.
For example, toy and small breed dogs need a calorie-dense food specially made for them due to their fast metabolisms, while some large and giant breed dogs need a particular macronutrient balance, found in large breed dog foods, which stops them from gaining weight and putting strain on their joints.
#2 Health concerns
Your dog’s potential or already existing health problems should also be taken into account, as what’s in your dog’s food can help prevent or alleviate her condition.
For example, if your dog is suffering from joint diseases, you can look for foods with high levels of glucosamine and chondroitin, which help with joint pain and cartilage repair. Or perhaps your dog is particularly at risk of developing cancer - help prevent it by looking for foods high in antioxidants.
Below you can find articles on what we believe to be the best dog foods for various breeds in 2017. While it’s not possible to write about all dog breeds, here we have covered breeds of all sizes and with different health concerns.
