Utah State Parks says pets are welcome at most state parks and most campgrounds, but “dog-friendly” never means unrestricted access. The statewide baseline is a leash no longer than six feet, constant attendance, and waste cleanup. Individual parks decide where dogs may hike, swim, visit beaches, enter buildings or stay overnight, so confirm current signs and park guidance before you go.
Utah’s statewide dog rules
Utah State Parks’ policy is straightforward: “Pets are welcome at most state parks and most state park campgrounds.” Dogs must remain on a maximum six-foot leash, may not be left unattended, and owners must pick up waste. Cabin, cottage and yurt rules vary by unit; campground permission does not automatically make every lodging option pet-friendly.
These ten parks are practical choices for different kinds of trips. They are editorial picks, not an official ranking, and access can change with seasonal closures, wildlife concerns, construction or local restrictions.
Quick comparison
| Park | Best fit | What the official guidance establishes | Important limit to check |

| East Canyon | Reservoir camping and a limited hike | Dogs welcome on a six-foot hand-held leash | Keep dogs away from wildlife; the FAQ identifies Mormon Flat as the hiking option described there |
| Goblin Valley | Desert formations and camping | Leashed, attended dogs with waste cleanup | Yurts allow no more than two dogs and charge a per-pet fee; verify current terms |
| Kodachrome Basin | Sandstone scenery and hiking | Park page lists pets allowed, plus hiking and camping | Confirm rules for each trail |

| Snow Canyon | Dog-inclusive desert hiking | All trails are described as dog-friendly with a leash under six feet | Stay on designated trails, clean up waste and avoid stressing wildlife |
| Utah Lake | Shoreline recreation and camping | Pets must be on a six-foot-or-shorter leash, attended and cleaned up after | The rules do not establish access to every shoreline feature |
The 10 parks, explained
1. Antelope Island State Park
Antelope Island suits owners who want expansive Great Salt Lake scenery and wildlife viewing. Dogs are allowed in most areas on a six-foot leash, and owners must clean up after them. They are excluded from public buildings. Park materials also identify trail and beach restrictions, so use the current trail map and obey posted signs rather than assuming every shoreline or route is open to pets. Keep your dog well away from bison and other wildlife; the park FAQ specifically recommends maintaining distance.

- Engineered for Ultimate Strength: Constructed from 1/2 inch diameter rock climbing rope, this heavy duty dog leash is distinctively durable and strong. It is designed to withstand the strongest pulls from large and energetic dogs, giving you peace of mind that your pup won't break free during walks
- Comfortable Padded Handle: Say goodbye to rope burn. Our soft, cushioned foam handle provides an amazing grip and protects your hands from sudden tugs. Enjoy longer walks and extended training sessions with total comfort, even if your dog is a puller
- Maximum Nighttime Visibility: Highly reflective threads are woven through the entire length of the rope (not just painted on), keeping you and your fur baby visible to passing cars and cyclists during early morning jogs or late-night strolls. Perfect for urban streets and low-light environments
- Tangle-Free 360° Swivel: Featuring a heavy-duty metal clasp that rotates 360 degrees, this ensures the rope never gets twisted or tangled, no matter how much your dog moves around. The zinc alloy hook is rust-proof and easy to clip onto any dog collar or harness in seconds
- Versatile for Any Activity: Park walks, trail hikes, or yard training. Offers ideal balance of freedom and control. Comes in 4ft, 5ft, 6ft lengths and 12 colors. 3/8" diameter suits small to medium dogs – lightweight and non-bulky. For medium and large dogs, choose 1/2" diameter
2. Dead Horse Point State Park
Dead Horse Point is a strong choice for leashed hiking or mountain biking among high-desert overlooks. The park states that “Pets must be leashed at all times, even while in the campground.” Dogs may use the hiking and mountain-biking trails and campground, and waste-bag dispensers are available at listed locations. Lodging requires a separate check: Wingate Yurts do not allow pets, while Moenkopi Yurts are pet-friendly.
3. East Canyon State Park
East Canyon provides a reservoir setting with camping and the Mormon Flat hiking option identified in the park FAQ. Its guidance says, “Dogs are welcome at East Canyon on a 6-foot hand-held leash.” Do not let a dog approach or chase wildlife. The limited trail information matters for planning: dog permission does not mean the park offers a large network of canine-accessible hikes.
4. Goblin Valley State Park
Goblin Valley works for a distinctive desert camping trip among its hoodoo-like formations. Camping guidance requires dogs to be leashed, attended and cleaned up after. Dogs may stay in yurts subject to a two-dog maximum and a per-pet fee; confirm the current amount and any lodging conditions when reserving because fees and policies can change.

5. Kodachrome Basin State Park
Kodachrome Basin combines camping and hiking with dramatic sandstone pipes. The park page lists “Pets Allowed,” but that broad amenity does not promise access to every trail, viewpoint or facility. Check route-specific signs before setting out. The park describes 67 sedimentary pipes and rock layers representing roughly 180 million years of geologic history—reasons to visit that are independent of its pet policy.

6. Palisade State Park
Palisade is geared toward reservoir recreation, camping, hiking and golf. Pets are allowed, with dogs required to be leashed, controlled, attended and cleaned up after. Because a pet-friendly park page does not automatically open every beach, dock or recreation zone to dogs, verify the rules for the area you plan to use.
7. Quail Creek State Park
Quail Creek’s amenities include pets, boating, fishing, swimming and camping, making it appealing for a water-oriented outing. The listing does not establish that dogs may use every beach or enter the reservoir. Treat “pets allowed” as a general park policy and check signs or staff guidance for swimming areas, shorelines and launches.

- Heavy Duty Internal Coil For Consistent Retraction and Recoil
8. Sand Hollow State Park
Sand Hollow lets leashed dogs accompany park activities and enter the campground. The park says not to leave pets in vehicles, an especially important rule in southern Utah heat. Cottage reservations need unit-level checking: Cottage 1 is pet-friendly, while Cottage 2 is not. Water and beach access still depend on posted local rules.
9. Snow Canyon State Park
Snow Canyon is the clearest hiking choice in this group. The park says, “all the trails in the park are now dog friendly!” Dogs must stay on a leash under six feet, remain on designated trails, and have waste bagged and disposed of. The park warns that dogs can stress wildlife, including desert tortoises, so keep them controlled around habitat and never allow chasing or off-trail wandering.

10. Utah Lake State Park
Utah Lake can work for a shoreline-focused day or campground stay. Its rules require pets to remain on a six-foot-or-shorter leash, be attended at all times and have waste cleaned up. Those requirements do not establish access to every shoreline, beach or recreation feature; check the specific area before bringing your dog there.

- COMPLETE THE LOOK: Available in vibrant colors tailored to match your dog's style. For the ultimate coordinated walking set, pair this leash with our matching Joytale reflective nylon collar
How to choose the right park for your dog
For the most reliable trail access
Start with Snow Canyon, whose official guidance covers all trails, or Dead Horse Point, where hiking and mountain-biking trails are explicitly included. Kodachrome Basin and Antelope Island require more route-by-route checking.
For reservoir or beach trips
Palisade, Quail Creek, Sand Hollow, East Canyon and Utah Lake offer water-based recreation, but none of those descriptions alone proves that dogs can swim or use every beach. Confirm the exact shoreline, launch or swimming-area rule before packing for a water outing.
For camping and overnight lodging
Campgrounds generally follow the statewide leash, attendance and cleanup rules. Lodging is more restrictive: compare the individual unit, not just the park. Dead Horse Point’s Wingate and Moenkopi Yurts have different policies, as do Sand Hollow’s two cottages; Goblin Valley yurts have a two-dog limit and pet fee.

For wildlife-sensitive areas and hot terrain
Antelope Island, East Canyon and Snow Canyon specifically call for wildlife awareness. Keep dogs close, prevent chasing and carry water. Desert pavement, exposed slickrock and summer temperatures can be hazardous even when a trail is legally open to pets.
What to pack and verify before departure
- A leash no longer than six feet; Snow Canyon specifies under six feet.
- Waste bags, even where a park provides dispensers.
- Water and a bowl for exposed desert or long shoreline walks.
- Confirmation of the exact trail, beach, building, cottage or yurt you intend to use.
- A plan for never leaving your dog unattended or in a vehicle.
- Current park alerts, closures, signs and seasonal conditions checked shortly before travel.
Rules and fees can change. Recheck the official Utah State Parks page for your destination and follow on-site signs when you arrive.
