Some dogs seem to be permanently plotting their next little adventure: a knowing gaze, an alert pair of ears, or a face that looks as if it has just been caught doing something suspicious. Here are 11 breeds whose features can create that playful impression. It’s a visual description, not a prediction of personality—no expression proves that a dog is naughty.
What gives a dog a mischievous look?
It often comes down to a combination of visible features: eyes that appear bright or intent, a furrowed or wrinkled brow, expressive ears, and coat or facial furnishings that frame the face. Breed standards describe ideal appearances, so individual dogs can look quite different from the examples suggested by their breed.
11 breeds with a mischievous-looking expression
1. Affenpinscher
The Affenpinscher’s shaggy facial hair frames its eyes, nose, and chin, giving the breed its distinctive monkey-like look. The Royal Kennel Club standard calls it “Rough coated, sturdy in build with a mischievous monkey-like expression” and also describes its “comic seriousness.”
2. Parson Russell Terrier
Deep-set, dark, almond-shaped eyes give the Parson Russell Terrier an alert, intent look. The United Kennel Club standard describes them as having “a mischievous, intelligent expression.”

3. Pumi
A corkscrew-curled coat and partly erect ears give the Pumi a lively outline. The American Kennel Club describes the breed’s expression as “whimsical,” a look that can read as cheerfully up to something.
4. Siberian Husky
The Siberian Husky’s keen gaze can seem to carry a joke or a plan, while the breed’s expression is not simply stern. The Fédération Cynologique Internationale standard describes it as “Keen, but friendly, interested and even mischievous.” That wording appears in FCI Standard No. 270, dated 18 November 2022.
5. Berger des Pyrénées
The United Kennel Club standard describes the Berger des Pyrénées as having a “mischievous, wary expression.” The breed has Smooth-Faced and Rough-Faced varieties, so the face’s appearance differs between them.
6. Basenji
A wrinkled brow and upright ears give the Basenji an alert, questioning expression; its tightly curled tail adds to its distinctive silhouette. The Basenji Club of America’s illustrated standard material highlights these features, while the official American Kennel Club standard text was approved May 8, 1990, and took effect June 28, 1990.

7. Schipperke
The Schipperke’s small, fox-like outline and distinctive black coat help give it a bright, watchful look. An American Kennel Club Gazette breed column from March 2020 describes the breed as having a mischievous expression.
8. Jack Russell Terrier
Jack Russell Terriers are among the examples named in the available opening of the iHeartDogs article behind this topic. Their inclusion here reflects that article’s visual framing, not a claim that every Jack Russell has a particular expression or temperament.

9. Shiba Inu
The Shiba Inu is another breed named in the available opening of the iHeartDogs article. A knowing-looking face can make a Shiba seem as though it has just been caught doing something suspicious, but that impression is no measure of behavior.
10. Smooth-Faced Berger des Pyrénées
The Smooth-Faced variety is one of the two forms distinguished by the United Kennel Club standard. Its short facial coat presents a different look from the Rough-Faced variety, though the standard’s mischievous, wary expression describes the breed.

The Rough-Faced variety has a different coat presentation around the face from its Smooth-Faced counterpart. It shares the breed’s standard description of a mischievous, wary expression; that phrase describes the ideal, not every individual dog.

“Mischievous-looking” is a lighthearted way to describe an impression made by facial features, not evidence that a dog is naughty, clever, or likely to cause trouble. Breed standards set out ideal characteristics, and the Royal Kennel Club notes that actual measurements can differ from the ideal. Individual dogs vary in appearance as well as behavior.
Quick Recap
- Eyes can appear intent because of their shape or how deeply they are set.
- Wrinkles, brows, upright or partly erect ears, and facial coat can change the impression a face makes.
- A playful-looking expression does not establish a dog’s personality.
