The familiar North American raccoon (Procyon lotor) is an adaptable wild mammal—not a tame pet. Its flexible diet, touch-sensitive paws, and climbing ability help it find food in natural habitats and near people. To observe raccoons safely, watch from a distance, never feed or handle them, and follow local rules.
Important: Keep children and pets from approaching raccoons, and do not approach an animal that appears sick, injured, or dead. A daytime sighting alone does not diagnose rabies. If an animal acts strangely, contact local animal control, public-health authorities, or park staff.
1. The familiar North American raccoon is Procyon lotor
National Park Service sources use Procyon lotor for the familiar North American raccoon, a mammal in the order Carnivora and family Procyonidae. Other raccoon species occur in the Americas, so this article focuses on the North American species.
Raccoons use a range of natural and built environments, including forests, wetlands, and areas near communities. Their presence near people does not make them domesticated or safe to approach.

2. The mask and ringed tail are identifying features
Most raccoons have gray to brownish-gray fur, a dark mask across the eyes, and a bushy tail marked with alternating dark and pale rings. These features can help identify them, though coat and markings vary. Consider body shape, tracks, behavior, and which species live in your region rather than relying on one feature alone.
3. Their front paws are dexterous and touch-sensitive
Raccoons use their dexterous front paws to explore and handle food. North Carolina Wildlife describes their sense of touch as well developed and useful during feeding. Their paws help them investigate objects and crevices, but they do not have human-like hands or a true opposable thumb.
This dexterity can help a raccoon get into unsecured garbage or food containers. Do not feed raccoons: access to human food can encourage persistent visits and conflicts with people and pets.
4. They are omnivores with a flexible menu
Raccoons eat both plant and animal foods. National Park Service and North Carolina Wildlife sources list examples such as fruit, nuts, insects, fish, frogs, eggs, and small mammals. Their diet varies with what is available; they do not depend on one food source.

Unsecured garbage, pet food, and other human food can attract raccoons. Intentional feeding is unnecessary and can create avoidable wildlife conflicts.
5. They are generally active at night
Raccoons are generally nocturnal, often traveling and foraging at night and resting in shelter during the day. A raccoon seen in daylight is not automatically sick or rabid. Do not try to diagnose its health from a single behavior; keep your distance and contact the appropriate local authority if it appears ill or acts strangely.

6. They adapt to natural and built environments
Raccoons can use varied habitats and shelter opportunities, including places near communities. Food and shelter around homes may attract them, but an animal that tolerates people at a distance is still wild and may bite or scratch if approached, cornered, or handled.
Secure garbage and other food sources rather than trying to make a raccoon friendly. Follow posted park or property rules when watching wildlife.
7. “Washing” food is not about cleanliness
Raccoons sometimes dunk food or move it around in water. The behavior may look like washing, but it is associated with their sensitive sense of touch, not an effort to clean food in the human sense.
A raccoon handling food in water is still a wild animal. Do not share its water source with pets or attempt to handle it.
8. They use a variety of den sites
Raccoons may shelter in places such as abandoned burrows, hollow logs, tree holes, and brush piles, examples described by the National Park Service. They may also use protected spaces around buildings.

If you suspect a raccoon is living in a structure, do not seal an opening without advice: young may be inside, and local rules may apply. Consult a qualified wildlife-conflict professional about humane, legal options.
9. They are capable climbers
The National Park Service describes raccoons as expert climbers. Their climbing ability helps them reach food and shelter, so a barrier at ground level may not be enough to keep them away from garbage or other attractants.
Secure food and trash in ways suited to your property, and do not climb after or corner a raccoon.
10. They make a variety of sounds
Raccoons can hiss and growl. The National Park Service’s Missouri page also describes a screech that can sound like an owl. Hearing a vocalization is no reason to approach: observe quietly from a safe distance and leave the animal room to move away.
11. Rabies is a serious reason to keep your distance
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) identifies raccoons as an important rabies host in parts of the United States. The risk varies by region; national rabies statistics are not estimates of raccoon encounters or raccoon transmission rates.
Never approach or handle a raccoon that appears sick or acts strangely. If a person is bitten or scratched, wash the wound with soap and running water, then promptly seek medical advice and contact local public-health authorities. CDC guidance emphasizes prompt advice because rabies is preventable with timely post-exposure care. Do not wait for symptoms or try to catch the animal.

How can I keep raccoons away from my garbage?
Secure garbage and other human food, and dispose of trash properly. Raccoons can climb and investigate containers, so choose measures appropriate to your property and local conditions. Avoid confronting or handling an animal.
