12 of the Healthiest Dog Breeds: Evidence, Trade-Offs, and Health Tests

There is no universal healthiest dog breed. This evidence-based shortlist explains why 12 breeds may be comparatively favorable candidates, what risks and lifestyle demands to consider, and how to verify puppy health clearances.

There is no scientifically proven single healthiest dog breed. The 12 healthiest dog breeds in this comparative shortlist are Jack Russell Terrier, Whippet, Miniature Poodle, Toy Poodle, Papillon, Chihuahua, Australian Cattle Dog, Border Collie, Australian Shepherd, Siberian Husky, Shiba Inu, and Havanese. Individual genetics, breeding, care, body condition, and household fit still determine an individual dog’s health.

“Healthiest” is a comparative label here, not a medical diagnosis or an official ranking. The shortlist combines population-level longevity evidence with body structure, breed-specific health-screening guidance, lifestyle fit, and the preventive care an owner can realistically provide.

For readers comparing breed traits and care demands, a complete dog breed book can be a useful reference alongside veterinary advice. The publisher’s description of The Complete Dog Breed Book, New Edition includes breed characteristics plus practical topics such as handling, grooming, exercise, and health; a reference book is not a substitute for an examination or a breeder’s health records.

Key takeaways

  • No breed is guaranteed to be healthy; “healthiest” is a comparative editorial label, not a medical diagnosis.
  • A 2024 study of 584,734 dogs across 155 breeds found population-level longevity associations with smaller body size and less extreme, non-flat facial structure.
  • According to Royal Veterinary College research published in 2022, Jack Russell Terriers had a UK life expectancy at age zero of 12.72 years in the study dataset.
  • Breed-specific health testing is more meaningful than a breeder’s generic claim that the parents had DNA testing.
  • A healthy breed can still be a poor choice when a household cannot meet its exercise, training, grooming, climate, or enrichment needs.
  • UK longevity figures are directional evidence for US readers, not precise American life-expectancy forecasts.

What is the healthiest dog breed?

No single dog breed can be scientifically declared the healthiest for every owner or every individual dog. This shortlist uses five practical comparison points: longevity evidence, body size and facial structure, inherited-risk screening, lifestyle fit, and the owner’s ability to provide preventive care.

What does the research say about dog longevity?

Large UK datasets support a cautious association between longevity and traits such as smaller body size and a less extreme head shape, but the research does not establish a universal league table of healthy breeds.

According to Dogs Trust and research collaborators in a 2024 Scientific Reports study, researchers analyzed 584,734 dogs, including 284,734 deceased dogs, across 155 breeds. The analysis considered parental lineage, breed, body size, sex, and cephalic index, which describes head-shape category. The broad pattern favored smaller dogs and dogs without an extremely flat facial structure for longevity. These are population-level associations, not guarantees for an individual puppy.

According to the Royal Veterinary College’s 2022 Scientific Reports life-table study, the overall life expectancy at age zero was 11.23 years in a UK dataset of 30,563 dogs. The same study estimated Jack Russell Terrier life expectancy at age zero at 12.72 years. The study also estimated French Bulldog life expectancy at age zero at 4.53 years, illustrating why extreme body and facial traits should be treated as relevant health considerations rather than cosmetic details.

The 2022 paper also cited an earlier UK study reporting a 14.2-year median age at death for Miniature Poodles, based on only 20 dogs. That figure is a useful historical signal for the breed, but the small sample makes it unsuitable as a definitive breed-wide average.

Evidence Population or source What it found How to interpret it
2024 longevity study 584,734 dogs, including 284,734 deceased dogs, across 155 breeds Smaller size and less extreme, non-flat facial structure were associated with more favorable longevity patterns. A broad population signal, not an individual-dog prediction.
2022 UK life tables 30,563 dogs in the United Kingdom Overall life expectancy at age zero was 11.23 years. A UK estimate that should not be presented as a universal or US-specific forecast.
Jack Russell Terrier result Breed estimate in the 2022 UK life-table study Life expectancy at age zero was 12.72 years. One of the strongest directly cited longevity signals in this research, not a promise for every Jack Russell.
Miniature Poodle historical result Earlier UK study cited by the 2022 paper; 20 dogs Median age at death was reported as 14.2 years. A small-sample historical estimate that needs cautious labeling.

Which 12 breeds belong on this comparative shortlist?

The table is an editorial comparison rather than a scientific ranking. “Health rationale” describes why a breed fits the framework; “main trade-off” describes the household or health issue that can make the breed a poor choice.

Breed Health rationale Main trade-off or watch point
Jack Russell Terrier Strong directly cited UK longevity signal: 12.72 years at age zero in the 2022 study. Needs daily activity, training, enrichment, and careful weight management.
Whippet Lean, athletic, non-flat-faced profile consistent with the broader longevity pattern. Needs safe exercise, warmth, and injury prevention.
Miniature Poodle Small, intelligent breed with a 14.2-year historical median-age-at-death signal from a sample of 20 dogs. Requires grooming, dental attention, training, and screening.
Toy Poodle Small body size and high trainability make the breed a reasonable longevity-focused candidate. Dental, orthopedic, eye, and inherited risks remain possible.
Papillon Small, active, trainable, and non-flat-faced. Dental care plus patella and eye monitoring may be important.
Chihuahua Small size and often long life make the breed a logical candidate under a longevity-focused definition. Dental disease, patellar problems, heart disease, obesity, and injury risk require attention.
Australian Cattle Dog Functional, athletic breed with a clearly documented screening pathway. A poor fit for a sedentary home and still vulnerable to inherited conditions.
Border Collie Functional, athletic breed with established breed-health guidance. Boredom and inadequate mental stimulation can undermine welfare.
Australian Shepherd Medium-sized athletic breed with formal hip, elbow, and eye evaluation recommendations. Active homes must still address inherited eye, joint, and DNA-related risks.
Siberian Husky Functional northern breed with a non-brachycephalic head shape. Exercise, climate, eye screening, and escape prevention are essential considerations.
Shiba Inu Compact, non-flat-faced breed that can suit an owner seeking an independent companion. Temperament and handling can challenge inexperienced owners.
Havanese Small companion breed that fits the shortlist’s size and facial-structure criteria. Grooming, dental care, and appropriate eye, patella, hip, and DNA screening still matter.

1. Jack Russell Terrier

Jack Russell Terrier has the strongest directly cited longevity signal in this research pass. The 2022 UK life-table study estimated Jack Russell Terrier life expectancy at age zero at 12.72 years, but that number describes a UK population estimate rather than a guaranteed lifespan for an individual dog.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Jack Russells are active, alert working terriers. A household that chooses one should plan for daily physical activity, training, problem-solving enrichment, and weight control. A Jack Russell can be comparatively favorable on longevity while still being a difficult match for an inactive or unprepared owner.

The sleek rectangular shape lays flat and stays in place, creating a stable, padded resting surface for crate training and daily confinement. Beyond crate use, this flexible mat works great on floors, sofas and beds indoors. It is also foldable and lightweight for easy carrying, making it a handy resting pad for camping, road trips and other outdoor adventures.

2. Whippet

Whippets fit the comparative pattern because they are lean, athletic, and non-flat-faced. The 2024 longevity research supports treating smaller size and less extreme facial structure as favorable population-level signals, and the Whippet’s build fits those broad characteristics.

Whippet health also depends on sensible management. Owners should provide regular exercise without reckless running conditions, reduce avoidable injury risks, and remember that a lean, short-coated dog may need appropriate warmth. The breed should not be described as disease-free.

3. Miniature Poodle

Miniature Poodle is a strong candidate for readers seeking a small, intelligent companion. The 2022 life-table paper cited an earlier UK result reporting a 14.2-year median age at death for Miniature Poodles, but that result came from only 20 dogs and should not be treated as a definitive breed average.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Miniature Poodles need regular grooming, dental attention, training, and breed-appropriate screening. Their intelligence can support excellent cooperation with care, but it also means that an owner must provide mental engagement rather than assuming that a small dog requires little work.

4. Toy Poodle

Toy Poodles benefit from the favorable longevity association seen with smaller body size and are highly trainable. Those advantages make Toy Poodles reasonable candidates when the owner is looking for a small dog and is prepared to manage the breed’s specific needs.

Small size does not eliminate dental disease, orthopedic problems, eye disease, or other inherited risks. Puppy buyers should check the current Toy Poodle parent-club screening recommendations instead of accepting a generic DNA panel as proof of overall health. Regular dental care and veterinary examinations remain important after adoption.

5. Papillon

Papillons are small, active companion dogs with a non-flat muzzle and high trainability. Papillons can suit owners who want a small dog that remains athletic and mentally engaged rather than a dog selected only for minimal activity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Dental care deserves attention, and buyers should ask about patella and eye monitoring where current breed guidance recommends it. Small size is a favorable population-level longevity signal, not a guarantee that a particular Papillon will avoid inherited disease or orthopedic problems.

6. Chihuahua

Chihuahuas are small and often long-lived, which makes them a logical candidate under a longevity-focused definition of “healthiest.” The 2024 research supports considering smaller body size in longevity discussions, but the study does not make every Chihuahua healthy or predict an individual dog’s outcome.

Dental disease, patellar problems, heart disease, obesity, and injury risk can all matter. Responsible breeding and a thorough veterinary examination are more useful than choosing the smallest available puppy. Owners should also protect Chihuahuas from preventable injuries and maintain a healthy body condition.

7. Australian Cattle Dog

Australian Cattle Dogs are functional, athletic dogs with a non-flat facial structure and a clearly documented breed-health screening pathway. Their inclusion reflects robust working function and responsible evaluation criteria, not a claim that the breed has no important inherited risks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The AKC’s herding-group health-testing guidance lists hip evaluation, elbow evaluation, ophthalmologist evaluation, BAER hearing testing, Primary Lens Luxation DNA testing, and PRA-prcd DNA testing among the recommended tests for Australian Cattle Dogs. A sedentary household should not choose the breed simply because it has a working-dog reputation; daily exercise, training, and meaningful activity are central to welfare.

8. Border Collie

Border Collies are functional, athletic dogs with substantial working capacity and established breed-health guidance. Their greatest household health and welfare risk may be mismatch: insufficient exercise, boredom, and inadequate mental stimulation can create chronic stress and behavior problems.

Prospective owners should compare the breed’s exercise and enrichment requirements with their actual routine. Buyers should also ask breeders for the current parent-club health clearances rather than relying on the Border Collie’s reputation for athleticism as evidence that an individual puppy is healthy. AKC guidance explains that breed testing requirements originate with each recognized national breed parent club.

9. Australian Shepherd

Australian Shepherds are medium-sized, athletic dogs with non-flat facial structure and formal health-screening recommendations. Their active nature can support good function when the dog receives suitable exercise, training, and veterinary care.

The AKC’s herding-group table lists hip evaluation, elbow evaluation, and ophthalmologist evaluation for Australian Shepherds. Those clearances reduce some breeding risks but do not guarantee an unaffected puppy. Inherited eye, joint, and DNA-related risks still make responsible breeding and veterinary follow-up necessary.

10. Siberian Husky

Siberian Huskies are functional northern dogs whose head shape is not brachycephalic, so they fit the article’s comparative framework better than extremely flat-faced breeds. Their inclusion is not a claim that Huskies are universally low-risk or easy to keep.

Owners need a realistic plan for exercise, climate, escape prevention, and inherited eye screening. A Husky’s coat and northern-dog background do not remove the need to manage heat, and the breed’s athleticism makes secure fencing and consistent training especially important considerations.

Dog Crate Pad Washable Dog Bed for Crate Large Cozy Mat 42-Inch Gray
  • SIZE GUIDE: Ideal dog bed for wire dog crates. This pad measures approximately 42inch*28inch.Fit for dogs weighing 70 to 90 pounds such as Australian Shepherd,Golden Retriever,Boxer.

11. Shiba Inu

Shiba Inu is a compact, non-flat-faced breed that may appeal to owners seeking a smaller, independent companion. The breed fits the shortlist’s body-size and facial-structure framework, but temperament and handling requirements are part of health and welfare.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Shiba Inu can challenge inexperienced owners, particularly those expecting automatic obedience or an easy first dog. Buyers should check the current breed-specific health-testing recommendations and evaluate the individual dog’s temperament, veterinary records, and breeding history rather than assuming that compact size guarantees robust health.

12. Havanese

Havanese are small companion dogs that fit the shortlist’s size and facial-structure criteria. Their inclusion does not mean that every Havanese is healthy or that small companion breeds need less preventive care.

Prospective owners should ask about recommended eye, patella, hip, and DNA screening as applicable. Havanese also require grooming and routine dental care, so the household should budget time and money for coat maintenance and ongoing veterinary care.

Which healthiest small dog breeds fit different homes?

The healthiest small dog breeds are not interchangeable: the best candidate depends on whether the household wants a trainable companion, an active small dog, an independent personality, or a lower-intensity routine.

Household priority Breeds to investigate Non-negotiable fit check
Small and highly trainable Toy Poodle, Miniature Poodle, Papillon Plan for training, grooming where applicable, dental care, and current parent-club screening.
Small companion with a compact footprint Chihuahua, Havanese Control body condition, maintain dental care, and ask about breed-specific inherited risks.
Small or compact dog with an independent temperament Shiba Inu Assess handling ability and temperament before choosing; the breed can challenge inexperienced owners.
Active terrier lifestyle Jack Russell Terrier Provide daily exercise, training, enrichment, and careful weight management.
Athletic outdoor lifestyle Whippet, Australian Cattle Dog, Border Collie, Australian Shepherd, Siberian Husky Confirm that the household can provide sustained exercise, training, secure management, and climate-appropriate care.

These are candidates to investigate, not guaranteed healthiest family dog breeds. Families should consider the dog’s individual temperament, the ages and abilities of household members, supervision, exercise time, grooming capacity, and access to veterinary care before focusing on a breed’s reputation.

Are these low-maintenance healthy dog breeds?

No breed on this list is automatically low-maintenance simply because it may have a favorable longevity profile. Small breeds can need intensive dental care; athletic breeds need daily physical and mental work; poodles and Havanese need coat care; Huskies need climate and escape-management planning; and Shiba Inu and terriers can require experienced handling.

“Healthy” should not be confused with “easy.” A breed that thrives in an active, structured home may have worse welfare in a sedentary home, while a breed that appears convenient on paper may create avoidable health problems when the owner cannot maintain its weight, teeth, exercise, or veterinary schedule.

What preventive care matters for every breed?

Preventive care matters for every dog, including dogs from breeds with relatively favorable population statistics. Owners should work with a veterinarian on the following:

  • Keep vaccinations and parasite prevention current according to veterinary advice and local risk.
  • Schedule regular veterinary examinations so emerging problems can be identified early.
  • Adapt the environment to the dog’s needs, including warmth for a lean short-coated Whippet, heat management for a Siberian Husky, and secure containment for an athletic or escape-prone dog.
  • Seek treatment promptly when a dog’s behavior, appetite, mobility, breathing, skin, teeth, or body condition changes.

A mixed-breed dog or a breed not commonly included on healthy-dog lists can also be exceptionally healthy. Conversely, a puppy from a popular “healthy” breed can inherit disease or be affected by poor breeding, inadequate care, or a mismatch with its home.

What health tests should a dog breeder do?

The correct health tests depend on the breed, and AKC says each breed’s testing requirements originate with its recognized national breed parent club. Depending on the breed, the package may include hip and elbow radiographs, eye examinations, cardiac examinations, hearing tests, patella evaluations, thyroid testing, or DNA tests.

Greg Burns, DVM, assistant professor of small animal theriogenology at Colorado State University, defines veterinary health testing as “the comprehensive evaluation of prospective breeding dogs (sire and dam), which encompasses breed-specific assessments aimed at decreasing the prevalence of heritable disorders in offspring.” AKC’s veterinary guidance on health testing provides that definition and explains why testing should be interpreted in breed context.

Australian Cattle Dog and Australian Shepherd examples show why a breed-specific approach is important:

Breed Recommended testing named in the dossier What the buyer should understand
Australian Cattle Dog Hip evaluation, elbow evaluation, ophthalmologist evaluation, BAER hearing test, Primary Lens Luxation DNA test, and PRA-prcd DNA test. A breeder’s evidence should address the complete recommended package rather than only one DNA result.
Australian Shepherd Hip evaluation, elbow evaluation, and ophthalmologist evaluation. Physical and specialist evaluations remain important even when a breeder also uses DNA testing.
Other shortlisted breeds Use the current recommendations from the relevant national breed parent club. Do not assume that a test recommended for one breed applies equally to another breed.

AKC’s DNA-testing guidance emphasizes that not every available DNA test applies equally to every breed and that genetic tests do not replace physical or specialist examinations. A “clear” DNA panel is evidence about the tests performed, not a guarantee of overall health.

How do you verify puppy health clearances?

Start with breed-specific health testing, then verify the actual results for both parents rather than accepting a marketing statement about the litter.

  1. Find the current parent-club recommendations. The recommended tests can differ by breed and can change as breed-health guidance develops.
  2. Ask for the sire’s and dam’s results. Request the named reports or certificates for every recommended evaluation, not just a breeder’s summary.
  3. Match the results to the parents. Confirm that each result belongs to the actual sire or dam of the puppy and that the dog’s identity is clear.
  4. Check whether results are publicly recorded. Use an appropriate health database when records are available, and be cautious when a breeder refuses to provide verifiable documentation.
  5. Ask about previous generations. A responsible breeder should be willing to discuss conditions that occurred in parents, grandparents, siblings, or earlier litters.
  6. Review the puppy’s veterinary records. Ask for vaccination records, examination history, identification information, and any treatment or health notes.
  7. Arrange an independent examination after acquisition. A veterinary examination can identify immediate concerns, but it cannot guarantee that a puppy will never develop an inherited condition.

These steps are more informative than a generic statement that a breeder “does DNA testing.” Genetic screening is one part of a broader breeding and veterinary assessment, not a universal certificate of health.

How should US readers use these longevity numbers?

US readers should use the strongest longevity figures in this dossier as directional evidence rather than exact American forecasts because the figures come primarily from UK veterinary datasets.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The 2022 Royal Veterinary College study notes that breed populations, genetics, and healthcare conditions can differ between countries. A UK life-table estimate can help compare broad patterns, but it cannot predict the lifespan of a particular dog in the United States. Local breeding practices, preventive care, body condition, environment, access to treatment, and the individual dog’s genetics all affect the result.

Does “healthiest” mean “fewest health problems”?

No. The available evidence in this dossier does not establish a universal ranking of breeds with the fewest health problems.

A breed may have a favorable longevity signal while still having important inherited risks or demanding care requirements. Conversely, an individual dog from a mixed-breed population or a less frequently recommended breed may remain healthy throughout life. The most responsible conclusion is comparative: choose a breed whose known risks, screening pathway, and lifestyle requirements fit the household, then choose an individual dog from a transparent and responsible breeding program.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The 12 healthiest dog breeds in this evidence-based shortlist are Jack Russell Terrier, Whippet, Miniature Poodle, Toy Poodle, Papillon, Chihuahua, Australian Cattle Dog, Border Collie, Australian Shepherd, Siberian Husky, Shiba Inu, and Havanese. The list is not a scientific ranking or a guarantee. A healthy individual dog, responsible breed-specific screening, preventive care, and a suitable home matter more than the breed name alone.
