“Teacup” is a marketing term, not an official breed size, and a puppy’s current weight cannot guarantee its adult size. These 15 recognized small breeds are sometimes marketed as teacup dogs; choose for health, temperament, and household fit—not extreme smallness.
Extreme size selection can raise health concerns, including low blood sugar, breathing problems, heart disease, luxating patellas, liver shunts, and hydrocephalus. The American Kennel Club (AKC) and Blue Cross both caution against treating “teacup” as a breed category or health credential.

1. Chihuahua
The Chihuahua is one of the smallest recognized dog breeds. The AKC breed standard lists a height of 5–8 inches and a weight not exceeding 6 pounds. Chihuahuas are often confident, alert, and attached to their people. They still need training and socialization, and their small bodies are vulnerable to rough play, falls, and cold weather.

2. Pomeranian
The AKC lists Pomeranians at 6–7 inches and 3–7 pounds. Their fluffy double coat can make them look larger, but they are lively, athletic dogs. Pomeranians are intelligent, bold, and often vocal; they benefit from short training sessions, daily play, and regular brushing. A seller promising an exceptionally tiny adult is making a prediction, not a guarantee.
3. Maltese
The Maltese is a white toy breed weighing less than 7 pounds, according to the AKC. Its long, silky coat needs consistent grooming. Maltese dogs are affectionate companions, not low-maintenance accessories. Toy breeds can be prone to dental problems, so daily tooth brushing and regular veterinary dental checks are worthwhile.
4. Yorkshire Terrier
The AKC lists the Yorkshire Terrier at 7–8 inches and about 7 pounds. Despite its small frame and flowing coat, the Yorkie retains a bold, curious terrier temperament. Yorkies need boundaries, mental stimulation, and socialization. A shorter pet trim can be easier to manage than a long coat, but still needs regular grooming.
5. Toy Poodle
Toy Poodles stand no more than 10 inches and are commonly listed at 4–6 pounds by the AKC. They are trainable, active dogs that need engagement. Obedience work, trick training, scent games, and brisk walks scaled to their size can help. Their curly coat needs regular brushing and professional grooming.
6. Papillon
The AKC standard gives the Papillon a height of 8–11 inches, with weight proportional to height. Its large, fringed ears are distinctive, but this is an alert, active dog—not merely a lap ornament. Papillons often enjoy training and dog sports suited to their size. Supervise play with larger dogs.

8. Japanese Chin
The AKC lists the Japanese Chin at 8–11 inches and 7–11 pounds. It is often quiet and adaptable to apartment living when given companionship and appropriate daily activity. Its short muzzle and large eyes make responsible health screening important. A smaller-than-usual Chin is not automatically healthier.
9. Pekingese
The Pekingese is a compact toy companion with a heavy coat and distinctive rolling gait. Its short-faced conformation can bring breathing, eye, and heat-related risks. Research those concerns rather than choosing for an especially flat face or tiny body. Keep exercise gentle in warm weather and discuss breed-specific risks with a veterinarian.
10. Shih Tzu
The AKC breed standard gives the Shih Tzu a height of 8–11 inches and weight of 9–16 pounds. “Teacup Shih Tzu” is not a separate recognized variety. Shih Tzus need regular coat care, whether brushing a longer coat or maintaining a clipped style; their short muzzle also calls for attention to breathing and heat tolerance.
11. Chinese Crested
The Chinese Crested comes in hairless and powderpuff varieties. Hairless dogs need protection from strong sun and cold, along with attention to skin health. The powderpuff has a soft coat that needs grooming. Neither variety is maintenance-free or becomes a separate official breed size when labeled “teacup.”

13. Toy Fox Terrier

14. Pug
Pugs are small companion dogs sometimes advertised as “teacup,” but extreme miniaturization is not a recognized variety. Their flat-faced structure can make them vulnerable to breathing difficulties, overheating, eye injuries, and other brachycephalic health problems. Ask about health testing and observe how the parents breathe and move.
15. Italian Greyhound
The AKC breed standard gives the Italian Greyhound an ideal height of 13–15 inches. This slender toy sighthound is graceful and affectionate but physically delicate. Falls from furniture, jumping off beds, and rough play can cause serious leg injuries. Secure flooring, suitable ramps or steps, and supervision around larger animals are sensible precautions.
What can go wrong with extreme tiny-dog breeding?
Blue Cross reports that selecting for extreme smallness can be associated with hypoglycemia, breathing problems, heart disease, luxating patellas, liver shunts, and hydrocephalus. Toy-breed puppies are especially vulnerable to low blood sugar when they do not eat adequately, become chilled, or experience stress, according to VCA Animal Hospitals and the Merck Veterinary Manual.

Warning signs can include unusual sleepiness, weakness, trembling, collapse, and seizures. These symptoms require urgent veterinary attention. “The runt” is not a medical diagnosis or a promise of a healthy miniature adult; unusual smallness can reflect poor growth, congenital disease, or another problem needing veterinary assessment.

How to choose a tiny dog responsibly
- Ignore promises about a guaranteed adult weight. Ask about the actual weights and health histories of parents and close relatives; adult size still cannot be certain.
- Ask what “teacup” means to the seller. If the answer is only “the smallest puppy,” that tells you little about breed, pedigree, health, or future size.
- See where puppies are raised. A responsible breeder should explain veterinary care, provide records, discuss breed-specific health testing, and let you meet the mother.
- Do not accept a puppy that seems unwell. Extreme lethargy, weakness, persistent coughing, labored breathing, diarrhea, tremors, or difficulty eating warrant veterinary attention before purchase or adoption.
- Budget for more than food and a tiny collar. Small dogs still need vaccines, parasite prevention, dental care, grooming, training, enrichment, and emergency veterinary care.
- Match the breed to the household. Consider barking, exercise, grooming, temperament, and supervision. A home with young children may be unsafe for a very delicate puppy.
Daily care for an extra-small dog
Tiny dogs need regular meals appropriate for their age and veterinary guidance, especially during puppyhood. Do not make abrupt feeding changes or let a young toy-breed puppy go long periods without eating. Ask your veterinarian for a safe feeding schedule rather than relying on a seller’s “teacup” instructions.
Use a correctly fitted harness, prevent access to dangerous heights, and supervise interactions with children and larger pets. Keep small dogs warm when needed, but avoid overheating flat-faced breeds. Daily tooth brushing, training, and gentle exercise help support their wellbeing.
Make sure everyone in the home understands that a tiny dog is not a toy. Picking up, dropping, squeezing, or roughhousing can cause severe injury.
FAQ
What is the smallest teacup dog breed?

How much does a teacup dog weigh when fully grown?
Sellers often use “teacup” for dogs expected to weigh about 5 pounds or less, but the term has no fixed definition. A puppy’s current weight cannot guarantee its adult size.
Are teacup dogs healthy?
Some very small dogs are healthy, but extreme size selection can increase health risks. Health screening and sound breeding practices matter more than the marketing label.
Are teacup dogs good with children?
Not automatically. Very small dogs can be injured by falls, squeezing, or rough play, so they need close supervision around children. Consider the individual dog’s temperament and whether your household can handle a delicate pet safely.
The Bottom Line
There are many wonderful tiny dog breeds, but no official “teacup” breed list. Treat the word as a reason to investigate—not as proof that a puppy is healthy, rare, purebred, or guaranteed to stay miniature. Choose a sound, well-socialized dog from a responsible source, and be prepared to provide training, exercise, dental care, protection, and veterinary attention.
