Some cows became famous as presidential providers; others as advertising icons, aviation firsts or figures in stories that outgrew the facts. These seven names are not all the same kind of history: Pauline Wayne and the three cows in the animal-lore stories were real animals, while Elsie and La Vache qui rit are brand characters. Mrs. O’Leary’s cow belongs to a famous legend—not a proven account of who started the Great Chicago Fire.
1. Pauline Wayne, President Taft’s White House cow
Pauline Wayne was a working dairy cow with an unusually prominent address. She supplied milk and butter to President William Howard Taft’s family, and was the last cow to graze on the White House lawn, according to the Presidential Pet Museum’s historical summary.
Wisconsin Senator Isaac Stephenson gave Pauline to Taft in 1910. The museum recounts that she attracted press attention, received invitations to cow shows and briefly disappeared while being shipped to a dairy exposition. As Taft’s presidency ended, she returned to Stephenson’s farm. The museum’s collection includes her cowbell.
2. Elsie, Borden’s memorable advertising cow
Elsie was created as a Borden advertising figure in the late 1930s, not as the biography of one particular cow. The Smithsonian’s account of Borden’s World’s Fair materials identifies artist David William Reid as the person who introduced Elsie during the company’s search for a trademark animal. Borden also had a large dairy exhibit at the 1939 World’s Fair, as the Smithsonian notes.

That origin makes Elsie’s fame a story of commercial design and promotion. The available Smithsonian account establishes her role as a mascot, but does not identify an individual live cow as the definitive Elsie.
3. Mrs. O’Leary’s cow, a famous fire legend
The familiar tale says a cow kicked over a lantern in a Chicago barn and started the Great Chicago Fire. It is a legend attached to the disaster, not an established explanation of its cause. The American Dairy Association Northeast’s overview of famous cows says the cow has since been exonerated.

4. Elm Farm Ollie, the cow credited with flight
The American Dairy Association Northeast names Elm Farm Ollie as the first cow to fly in an airplane. That concise claim makes her an aviation curiosity as well as an animal-lore figure, but the overview does not provide a detailed biography or primary-record account. Her place among famous cows is clear; further particulars should be treated cautiously.

Minnie Moo was a Holstein at Disney World known for spots shaped like Mickey Mouse, according to the American Dairy Association Northeast. The striking markings made her a natural attraction in a themed entertainment setting. The source offers this brief identification rather than a fuller account of her life.
6. Little Witch, the racing cow
Little Witch is included in the American Dairy Association Northeast’s famous-cows overview as a race cow. That gives her a different claim to attention from a mascot or a presidential pet, although the overview supplies no detailed account of her racing history.

7. La Vache qui rit, the laughing cow on a cheese brand
La Vache qui rit (“The Laughing Cow”) began as a cheese brand in 1921 at Orgelet, France. The brand’s official history credits Léon Bel with developing it and says artist Benjamin Rabier refined the red cow image in 1923, giving her earrings.
The character crossed borders with the product: the brand entered the United Kingdom in 1929 under the name The Laughing Cow. Unlike an individual animal whose unusual life made it famous, this cow became a lasting symbol through branding.
