National Park Service information describes the cats as rare, seldom seen, elusive or present at low density. Big Bend National Park has the clearest visitor statistic—more than 150 reports a year—while Yellowstone provides the clearest population estimate for a defined area: 29–45 cougars in its northern range during 2014–2017.
How to use this list
Mountain lions, cougars, pumas, panthers and catamounts are names for Puma concolor. They are solitary predators that mainly hunt deer and other mammals. Dawn and dusk are generally the most useful viewing windows because lion activity follows prey activity, but sightings remain unpredictable. Watch only from places where park rules allow, keep your distance, never feed, bait or pursue wildlife, and report observations through the park’s current ranger or wildlife-reporting channel.
| Park | What is documented | What visitors should expect | Habitat and viewing context |
|---|---|---|---|
| Glacier, Montana | Native top predator; population size unknown | Rarely seen | Mountain habitat with deer and other prey; sightings are generally chance encounters |
| Big Bend, Texas | More than 150 lion sightings each year (NPS, 2021) | Reports occur most often along roads, with some trail encounters | Desert and mountain terrain; several encounters since 1984 resulted in attacks |
| Yosemite, California | Park-wide count not established; a 2003 study estimated one lion per 25 square miles in its study area | Shy and solitary; sightings are uncommon | Animals range through mountains and valleys |
| Zion, Utah | Total unknown; possibly as few as half a dozen | Reports from Kolob Canyons; backcountry cameras have recorded lions | Rugged canyon and backcountry habitat |
| Yellowstone, Wyoming/Montana/Idaho | 29–45 cougars of all age classes in the northern range, 2014–2017 | Few visitors see one | Light-snow northern range offers prey and favorable habitat; cameras and GPS collars support monitoring |
| Rocky Mountain, Colorado | Present in low numbers | Rarely seen | Territories shift with elk and deer; lions are the park’s largest current predators |
| Olympic, Washington | Range throughout the Olympic Peninsula; low population density | Seldom seen | Large, forested peninsula habitat; report sightings to park staff |
1. Glacier National Park, Montana
Glacier identifies the mountain lion as a native top predator, but the park does not know the population size and labels the animal “rarely seen.” Its broad mountain landscape supports the species, yet a visit should be planned for scenery rather than a dependable cat sighting.
If you encounter a lion
Stay with your group, pick up small children, make noise and do not run. Face the animal, stand upright and make yourself look larger by raising or waving your hands. Back away slowly. If it attacks, fight back; Glacier’s guidance also advises using bear spray.

2. Big Bend National Park, Texas
Big Bend offers the strongest visitor-report number in this group: the National Park Service recorded more than 150 mountain-lion sightings in 2021. Most reports came from park roads, although trail encounters also occur. That figure counts reports, not the number of individual lions or a probability of seeing one.
Why caution matters
Big Bend records several encounters resulting in attacks since 1984. Keep children close, never run, maintain eye contact, stand upright with your arms raised and retreat slowly. If a lion approaches, yell and throw rocks or sticks. Fight back if attacked.

3. Yosemite National Park, California
Mountain lions roam Yosemite’s valleys and mountains, where they are shy and solitary. The National Park Service cites a California estimate of about 5,000 animals, but that is a statewide figure rather than a Yosemite count. A park-affiliated 2003 study found 18 known individuals in its study area and estimated one lion per 25 square miles there; that study-area density is not a current park-wide population estimate.
What to look for
Open valley edges and places used by deer can offer visibility, but no Yosemite location guarantees an encounter. Scan quietly around dawn or dusk from a lawful, distant vantage point and leave immediately if wildlife changes its behavior.

4. Zion National Park, Utah
Zion’s total mountain-lion population is unknown and may be as small as half a dozen, according to the National Park Service. Sightings have been reported in Kolob Canyons, and motion-activated cameras have documented lions in the backcountry.
How evidence is gathered
Camera records show that lions use areas visitors rarely see; they do not mean hikers are likely to encounter one. Treat a camera image or track as evidence of presence, not an invitation to search for the animal. Follow closures, stay on permitted routes and report sightings to park staff.

5. Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, Montana and Idaho
Yellowstone’s northern range had an estimated 29–45 cougars of all age classes during 2014–2017. This is the clearest numerical estimate in the list, but it applies to that range and period, not to every lion in the park today. Cougars occur throughout Yellowstone in summer, while few visitors see them.
Why the northern range is important
Relatively light snowfall and available prey make the northern range strong habitat. Biologists use remote cameras and GPS collars to monitor the population. Visitors should use binoculars from roads or other permitted viewpoints rather than leaving routes or approaching animals.

6. Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado
Rocky Mountain National Park lists mountain lions as present in low numbers and rarely seen. The species is the park’s largest current predator, and its seasonal territories follow elk and deer.
Practical expectations
Because prey movements change with season and elevation, a place that produces tracks or a distant report one week may be empty the next. Keep wildlife wild, maintain a large distance and tell a ranger about a sighting instead of following the animal.
7. Olympic National Park, Washington
Cougars range throughout the Olympic Peninsula but persist at low population densities and are seldom seen. The peninsula’s extensive habitat can support the species without making encounters common.
Reporting a sighting
Notify a ranger or use Olympic National Park’s current wildlife-reporting system. Record the location, time and direction of travel from a safe distance; do not approach for a closer photograph.
When are mountain lions most active?
Dawn and dusk are the most useful general viewing periods. Lions’ activity corresponds with deer and other prey, so seasonal prey movements also influence where they travel. These patterns improve your odds of being in the right place to observe wildlife, but they do not turn any park into a guaranteed sighting destination.
Quick Recap
How to watch responsibly
- Use roadsides, open valleys and habitat edges only where park rules permit.
- Carry binoculars or a long lens instead of approaching an animal.
- Never feed, bait, call, chase or block a mountain lion.
- Keep children close and pets controlled where pets are allowed.
- Check current closures, reporting procedures and equipment rules before your visit.
- A wildlife trail camera can document elusive animals without a close encounter, but deploy one only where the park expressly permits it.
What to do if a mountain lion is nearby
- Stay together and pick up small children.
- Do not run or turn your back.
- Face the lion, stand tall and raise or wave your arms to appear larger.
- Make noise and back away slowly, leaving the animal an escape route.
- If it approaches, yell and throw rocks or sticks.
- If attacked, fight back aggressively and use bear spray if available.
- Once safe, report the encounter promptly to park staff and follow their instructions.
