An electric eel can discharge up to 860 volts. That record belongs to Electrophorus voltai, reported by the Smithsonian Institution in 2019. The number is a species maximum, not a fixed output from every individual, and voltage alone does not describe the current or danger of a shock.
1. Electric eels are fish, not true eels
Electric eels are eel-shaped freshwater knifefish in the genus Electrophorus. They are unrelated to true eels such as morays and freshwater eels; the similar body shape is superficial.
A Smithsonian study published in 2019 recognized three species: Electrophorus electricus, E. voltai and E. varii. They belong to a much larger South American radiation of more than 220 knifefish species. The Smithsonian described roughly 250 electricity-generating fish species in South America, but electric eels are unusual because they use electricity to hunt as well as for defense.
The three recognized species
| Species | Maximum discharge reported | Habitat pattern described by Smithsonian | Taxonomic status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Electrophorus voltai | Up to 860 volts, the 2019 record | Associated with highland waters | Recognized in the 2019 study |
| Electrophorus electricus | Not stated in the cited sources | Guiana Shield highlands | Recognized in the 2019 study |
| Electrophorus varii | Not stated in the cited sources | Murky lowland waters | Recognized in the 2019 study |
The species differ in geography and in the water conditions in which their discharges operate. A record for one species should not be presented as the output of every electric eel.

2. Most of the body is devoted to electricity
Three electric organs—the main electric organ, Hunter’s organ and Sachs’ organ—occupy about 80 percent of an electric eel’s body, according to the Smithsonian National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute.
These organs contain stacks of electrically excitable cells. When the cells activate together, they create a voltage across the surrounding water. The eel’s elongated shape helps place much of that electrical system along its body, allowing signals to spread through the water around it.
3. Electricity is also a sensory and social system
Electric eels do not use electricity only as a weapon. Weak discharges provide information about their surroundings, helping them navigate and detect objects in water where visibility is poor.

Electrolocation
A weak electrical field is disturbed by nearby animals and objects. By sensing those changes, an eel can locate prey and orient itself in murky water or at night.

Electrical signals can also carry information between electric fish. The available Smithsonian accounts describe weak discharges as supporting communication, so electricity functions as a sensory and social system as well as a hunting tool.
4. Strong pulses can reveal, stun and deter
When an eel switches to stronger discharges, the effect is more dramatic. The pulse can make hidden prey twitch, exposing its position; subsequent shocks can paralyze the animal long enough for the eel to seize it.

The same high-output system can discourage predators. Electric eels are therefore both predators and defended prey. A high voltage does not by itself tell you how dangerous a particular encounter will be: current, contact, duration and the animal’s condition also matter, and the cited sources do not establish a universal human-injury threshold.
5. They live in freshwater across northern South America
Electric eels inhabit freshwater environments connected to the Amazon and Orinoco systems. Reported habitats include oxbow lakes, pools, slow-moving streams and flooded forests.

E. electricus is associated with Guiana Shield highlands, E. voltai with highland regions, and E. varii with murky lowlands. Local water conductivity affects how electrical fields spread, so habitat and body form are important to how each species senses and shocks in its environment.

6. Electric eels breathe air
Electric eels are obligate air-breathers: they must periodically take oxygen from the atmosphere. Their highly vascularized mouths act as respiratory surfaces when they gulp air.
This adaptation is especially useful in warm, stagnant or muddy water, where dissolved oxygen can be scarce. An eel may rise to the surface, take a mouthful of air and return underwater while continuing to live in habitats that would challenge a fish relying only on gills.

Adult electric eels are opportunistic predators. Smithsonian’s profile lists fish, crustaceans, insects, amphibians, reptiles and small mammals among their food.

Young eels have a narrower diet and focus mainly on invertebrates. As they grow, their larger bodies and stronger electrical discharges let them tackle a wider range of prey, including animals that would be difficult to detect or subdue by sight alone.
8. Males build saliva nests and guard the young
During the dry season, females lay about 1,200–1,700 eggs. Males construct nests from saliva and guard the eggs and larvae. The young remain protected until seasonal rains return and conditions improve.
The Smithsonian notes that the exact spawning pattern is not fully resolved; it remains uncertain whether females release eggs in batches or all at once. That qualification matters because the clutch range is established while some details of timing and spawning behavior are still being investigated.
Lifespan is not a single fixed number
The average lifespan of wild electric eels is unknown. Captive estimates cited by the Smithsonian are sex-specific: males live about 10–15 years and females about 12–22 years. Those figures are captivity estimates, not a guaranteed lifespan for wild individuals.
