Dachshund Beagle Mix Dog Breed Guide

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A Dachshund Beagle mix—often called a Doxle—combines two determined scent hounds in a compact package. These dogs are usually affectionate, curious, food-motivated and lively, but they may also bark, dig, chase scents and ignore a cue when something more interesting appears.

There is no official breed standard for the Doxle. A puppy can inherit the Dachshund’s long back and short legs, the Beagle’s more moderate build, or a mixture of both. That variation matters when estimating adult size, exercise needs, temperament and health risks.

Dachshund Beagle mix at a glance

Trait Typical expectation
Other names Doxle, Beaschund and Beweenie
Size Small to small-medium; adult size varies considerably
Weight Often around 15–30 pounds, but there is no guaranteed range
Coat Usually short and shedding; wire- or long-coated coats are possible
Energy Moderate to high
Training Capable, but independent, distractible and sometimes stubborn
Good with children Often, when socialized and supervised appropriately
Off-leash reliability Frequently poor unless in a securely fenced area
Apartment suitability Possible, provided barking and daily activity are managed

The weight figure is only a rough guide. Dachshunds come in different size varieties and Beagles are also not all built alike. A mixed-breed puppy’s parents, sex, diet, growth pattern and genetics will affect its adult size more than an online calculator.

Appearance and coat

Most Doxles have a narrow muzzle, expressive eyes, floppy ears and a compact body. The legs may be noticeably short, moderately short or closer to Beagle length. Some have the Dachshund’s elongated back; others look more like a sturdy Beagle with a slightly longer body.

Possible coat colors include combinations of black, tan, white, red, chocolate, cream and lemon. Markings may include the Beagle’s typical hound pattern, Dachshund-style tan points, dapple-like coloring or patches. Color and markings do not reliably predict personality or health.

The coat is commonly smooth and short, but a puppy from a long-haired or wire-haired Dachshund line may have longer or rougher hair. Both parent breeds shed, so this is not a dependable choice for someone seeking a low-shedding or hypoallergenic dog.

Temperament

A Doxle often wants to be near its people and may be playful, affectionate and entertaining at home. Both parent breeds were developed to use their noses, however, and that working background can show up as intense sniffing, tracking, digging and selective hearing.

Common tendencies include:

  • Strong food interest: meals, treats and unattended groceries may become training opportunities—or targets for theft.
  • Vocal behavior: barking, whining and alerting can be prominent, particularly in a bored or under-socialized dog.
  • Persistence: Dachshunds were bred to work independently, while Beagles may follow a scent rather than respond immediately to a person.
  • Chase behavior: cats, rabbits, squirrels and other small animals may trigger pursuit.
  • Sociality: many are friendly with people and dogs, but the individual dog’s early experiences matter more than the label.
  • Attachment: some become distressed when left alone and need gradual alone-time training.

Do not assume that a small, friendly dog is automatically easy to handle. A Doxle can be affectionate while still guarding food, barking at hallway noises or refusing to come away from an interesting scent.

Exercise and enrichment

Most adult Doxles need daily walks and active play, but their exercise should be adapted to body shape. A practical starting point is one or two moderate walks plus short training or play sessions each day. Some dogs need more; older, overweight or medically affected dogs may need less.

Good activities include:

  • Leashed walks that allow safe sniffing
  • Food puzzles and scatter feeding
  • Short scent-trailing games indoors or outdoors
  • Retrieve games on level, non-slip surfaces
  • Basic obedience and trick training
  • Controlled play with suitable dogs

Exercise is not just about tiring the dog physically. Nose work and food-search games give a scent hound an appropriate outlet for behaviors that might otherwise become digging, counter-surfing or escape attempts.

Because Dachshunds are at increased risk of back injury, avoid encouraging repeated jumping from furniture, leaping down stairs or high-impact twisting games. Puppies should not be pushed into long runs or repetitive jumping. Ask a veterinarian for individualized limits if the dog has back, joint or weight problems.

Training a Doxle

Reward-based training usually works best. Small, tasty treats can be powerful, but meals should be reduced accordingly so training does not quietly cause weight gain. Keep sessions short—around three to five minutes for a young puppy—and repeat them throughout the day.

Priorities for the first year

  1. Name response and attention: reward the dog for looking at you before adding distractions.
  2. Recall foundations: begin indoors, then use a long line in a secure area. Never test recall beside a road or in an unfenced open space.
  3. Leash skills: reward a loose leash and practice around gradually increasing distractions.
  4. “Leave it” and “drop it”: teach trades rather than forcibly taking objects from the dog’s mouth.
  5. Calm greetings: reinforce four paws on the floor instead of rewarding jumping.
  6. Handling: gently practice ear checks, paw touches, nail care and tooth brushing.
  7. Alone-time skills: build up brief separations before expecting the dog to cope with a full workday.

Harsh corrections can increase fear, defensive behavior or conflict around handling. They also do not remove the motivation to follow a scent. Management—secure fencing, a leash, closed food containers and reward-based training—is more dependable.

Children, dogs and other pets

A well-socialized Doxle can be a good family companion, but children should be taught not to climb on, hug tightly, disturb or take food from the dog. The dog needs a quiet retreat that children cannot enter.

Interactions with toddlers require active adult supervision. A child’s sudden movement may startle a dog, and a Dachshund-influenced dog may object to rough handling of its back. A history of friendliness is not a substitute for supervision.

Many Doxles enjoy other dogs, particularly when introduced gradually. Their response to cats and small pets is less predictable because both parent breeds can have prey-drive and chase instincts. Introductions should use barriers and leashes, with no unsupervised access until the animals have demonstrated consistently safe behavior.

Grooming

Grooming is usually straightforward, especially with a smooth coat:

  • Brush once or twice weekly; brush more often during shedding periods.
  • Check the floppy ears weekly for odor, redness, excess wax and discharge.
  • Trim nails before they click on hard floors or alter the dog’s gait.
  • Brush the teeth regularly with dog toothpaste.
  • Bathe when dirty or when directed for a skin condition.

Longer or wire coats may require more frequent brushing and occasional trimming around the feet or face. Do not shave a coat simply because the dog is shedding. If the ears smell bad, look painful or the dog is shaking its head, arrange a veterinary examination instead of repeatedly applying over-the-counter ear products.

Health concerns

A Doxle can inherit health risks associated with either parent. Being a crossbreed does not eliminate inherited disease, and there is no complete health database that establishes exact disease rates for this mix.

Back and orthopedic problems

The Dachshund’s long-backed, short-legged body is associated with intervertebral disc disease (IVDD). A Doxle with a long back or short legs may be vulnerable, although no owner can predict risk from appearance alone. Maintain a lean body condition, use ramps where appropriate, limit unnecessary jumping and seek prompt veterinary care for back pain, reluctance to move, wobbliness, knuckling or sudden weakness.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hip dysplasia, patellar luxation and other orthopedic problems may also occur. A dog that is limping, repeatedly bunny-hopping, struggling with stairs or avoiding play should be examined rather than simply rested indefinitely.

Other possible concerns

  • Obesity
  • Dental disease, particularly in a small dog with crowded teeth
  • Ear infections
  • Allergies and skin disease
  • Epilepsy or seizure disorders
  • Eye conditions, including progressive retinal problems
  • Hypothyroidism

These are possibilities, not a diagnosis. Choose a veterinarian who can assess the individual dog, keep vaccinations and parasite prevention current, monitor teeth and weight, and recommend testing based on age, symptoms and family history.

Feeding and weight control

Feed a complete, balanced diet suitable for the dog’s life stage. Start with the food manufacturer’s guide, then adjust according to body condition, weight trend, activity and veterinary advice. Treats, dental chews and table scraps count toward the daily calorie total.

Weight control deserves particular attention in this mix. Extra weight increases strain on a potentially vulnerable back and can worsen joint disease. You should be able to feel the ribs under a thin layer of fat, see a waist from above and identify an abdominal tuck from the side. Ask your veterinary team to demonstrate the ideal condition for your dog.

Finding a puppy or adopting an adult

If buying from a breeder, ask to meet the mother, identify the father, review veterinary records and see where the puppies are raised. A responsible breeder should discuss health problems in previous generations, provide a written contract and accept the dog back if circumstances change.

Health questions should cover both sides of the cross. Depending on the parent lines, useful evaluations may include orthopedic, eye, cardiac or DNA testing. A claim that the puppies are “hybrid vigor guaranteed” is not a substitute for documented health history.

For an adult rescue, ask specifically about:

  • Leash pulling and escape attempts
  • Barking when left alone or when hearing outside noises
  • Interactions with children, dogs, cats and small animals
  • Food guarding, object guarding or bite incidents
  • Back pain, seizures, allergies and current medication
  • House-training and tolerance of nail, ear and veterinary handling

Shelter breed labels are educated guesses, not proof of ancestry. Behavior observed in foster care may tell you more than a listing that calls the dog a Doxle.

Is a Dachshund Beagle mix right for you?

This mix can suit an owner who wants a compact companion with personality and is prepared for daily activity, barking management, scent-driven behavior and careful weight control. It is less suitable for someone seeking a reliably quiet dog, a guaranteed off-leash hiking partner or a pet that can be left alone without preparation.

FAQ

How big will a Dachshund Beagle mix get?

Many adults weigh roughly 15–30 pounds, but that is only an estimate. Dachshund size varieties, the Beagle parent’s build and the puppy’s individual genetics can produce a smaller or larger dog.

Is a Doxle easy to train?

It can learn quickly, especially with food rewards, but it may be independent and easily distracted by scents. Short, consistent sessions and secure management are more realistic than expecting instant obedience.

Does a Dachshund Beagle mix shed?

Usually, yes. Most have a short coat that sheds moderately, while some inherit a longer or wire coat. No Doxle should be considered reliably hypoallergenic.

Can a Doxle live in an apartment?

Yes, if its exercise, sniffing and training needs are met. Barking at noises and boredom-related destruction can be difficult in an apartment, so sound management and alone-time training are important.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are Dachshund Beagle mixes prone to back problems?

Some may be, particularly dogs with a noticeably long back and short legs. Keep the dog lean, reduce unnecessary jumping and seek veterinary help promptly for pain, weakness, wobbliness or reluctance to move.

Can a Doxle be trusted off leash?

Do not assume so. Both parent breeds can follow scents or chase animals. Use a leash or secure fencing unless the individual dog has demonstrated exceptional recall in appropriately controlled settings.

The Bottom Line

The Dachshund Beagle mix is a lively, affectionate scent hound with a big personality in a relatively small body. Expect shedding, food motivation, barking and a strong interest in following smells. The best home provides reward-based training, daily sniffing and exercise, secure containment, careful weight management and sensible protection for the dog’s back.
