If you have a dog allergy, the phrase hypoallergenic dog needs a careful translation. No breed is truly allergen-free—not even a hairless dog, a Poodle, or a carefully bred Doodle. Dog allergies are reactions to proteins found in dander, saliva, skin material, and urine; fur can also carry pollen, dust, and mold indoors.

Some dogs shed less or have coats that hold onto loose skin and hair instead of releasing it around the home. That may make them easier for some allergy sufferers to tolerate, but breed alone cannot predict your response. The 35 dogs below are commonly marketed as lower-shedding or allergy-friendlier, not medically proven hypoallergenic breeds.

What “hypoallergenic” means in practice

There is no scientifically established group of hypoallergenic dog breeds. Studies have not shown consistent differences in household dog-allergen levels between homes with dogs marketed as hypoallergenic and homes with other dogs. One study even found higher Can f 1 concentrations in hair and coat samples from dogs labeled hypoallergenic, while airborne levels did not consistently differ by breed.

That does not mean coat type is irrelevant. A dog that sheds very little may distribute less hair and dander through carpets, furniture, and clothing. A tightly curled or corded coat may trap loose material until grooming. But these traits do not stop a dog from producing allergenic proteins.

  • AHAM VERIFIDE, PROVEN PERFORMANCE: AHAM VERIFIDE with a CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate) rating of 143 CFM for smoke, 153 CFM for dust, and 167 CFM for pollen—refreshing air in a 222 ft² room 4.8 times per hour and a 1,073 ft² room once per hour
  • GENUINE REPLACEMENT FILTERS: For the best performance and longest lifespan, use official Levoit filters designed specifically for Levoit air purifiers. Levoit replacement filters ensure the best fit and high-efficiency filtration, while off-brand filters may be unreliable and may damage your Levoit air purifier
  • FIND COMFORT: Our filter has strong filtration performance of fine particles. 99.97% filtration efficiency for 0.1 to 0.3μm airborne particulates, including pollen, dust, and animal dander allergens. Tested by an independent lab

Individual dogs also vary. Two dogs of the same breed can produce different amounts of allergen, and your immune system may react to one dog more strongly than another. A short-haired dog is not automatically a better choice, and “hairless” means less fur—not less saliva, dander, or allergen.

35 breeds commonly marketed as lower-shedding

The list includes purebred dogs as well as Labradoodles and Goldendoodles. The two Doodle varieties deserve special caution: their coats can range from curly to wavy to relatively straight, and shedding is not predictable in every puppy.

  1. Affenpinscher

This small German companion breed has a rough, wiry coat that generally sheds modestly. Its coat needs regular brushing and occasional hand-stripping or trimming. Affenpinschers are lively, confident, and sometimes stubborn, so their small size does not make them a low-effort dog.

  2. Afghan Hound

The Afghan Hound’s long, fine coat can be a reasonable option for some allergy sufferers because it is not a heavy seasonal shedder. It needs frequent brushing to prevent mats and is an independent sighthound with substantial exercise and training needs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  3. American Hairless Terrier

With little or no hair, this breed leaves less fur on furniture, but it still produces skin flakes and saliva allergens. Bare skin also needs protection from sun and cold. American Hairless Terriers are alert, playful terriers that usually need daily activity.

  4. Australian Terrier

This small terrier has a harsh outer coat and softer undercoat, with relatively low shedding when groomed consistently. Expect a bold, energetic dog with a tendency to chase small animals and sound the alarm.

  5. Barbet

The French Barbet has a dense, curly coat that tends to retain loose hair rather than scatter it. It requires thorough brushing and professional grooming. Barbets are athletic water dogs and need more than short neighborhood walks.

  6. Basenji

Basenjis have short coats and are notably clean, but short hair does not make them allergy-proof. They shed some hair and produce the same types of dog allergens as other breeds. This independent, high-energy breed can be difficult for first-time owners and is not reliably obedient without patient training.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  7. Bedlington Terrier

The lamb-like Bedlington coat is crisp, curly, and low-shedding, but it needs regular clipping and maintenance. Under the distinctive appearance is an active terrier that may chase, dig, and challenge inconsistent rules.

  8. Bergamasco Sheepdog

The Bergamasco develops a distinctive coat made of mats or “flocks.” It is not a wash-and-go coat: owners need to learn how to separate and care for the cords. These intelligent herding dogs are devoted but require training, space, and mental work.

  9. Bichon Frise

Bichons have a curly coat that sheds lightly but needs frequent brushing and regular professional grooming to avoid mats. They are cheerful, social companion dogs and can be prone to separation distress if left alone for long periods.

  10. Bolognese

The Bolognese has a soft, fluffy coat with limited shedding, though loose hair and dander still exist. Its coat mats easily without routine brushing. This small Italian companion is generally affectionate and people-focused, making gradual alone-time training important.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  11. Cairn Terrier

Cairn Terriers have a rough double coat that can shed less when properly maintained, especially with hand-stripping. They are busy, spirited terriers with strong digging and chasing instincts. Regular grooming is part of the allergy-management plan.

  12. Chinese Crested

The hairless variety has hair on the head, feet, and tail; the Powderpuff variety has a full, soft coat. Neither is allergen-free. Hairless dogs need skin care and weather protection, while Powderpuffs need brushing. Both can be affectionate but sensitive companions.

  13. Coton de Tulear

The Coton’s long, cottony coat usually sheds lightly, but it can tangle and mat quickly. Daily or near-daily brushing is often necessary. Cotons are playful companion dogs that tend to form close bonds with their families.

  14. Goldendoodle

A Goldendoodle may inherit a lower-shedding curly coat, but it may also have a wavy or straighter coat that sheds more. The cross is not predictably hypoallergenic. Grooming can be intensive, and prospective owners should meet the individual adult dog rather than rely on the puppy’s coat texture.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  15. Havanese

Havanese have a long coat that often sheds lightly, although individual coats vary. The hair needs regular brushing and trimming. These sociable dogs are eager to participate in family life and may struggle with prolonged isolation.

  16. Irish Water Spaniel

The Irish Water Spaniel’s tight, curly coat is generally low-shedding but needs regular grooming. It is a large, athletic sporting dog with a strong retrieving instinct and a need for vigorous exercise, swimming, and training.

  17. Italian Greyhound

Italian Greyhounds have a very short coat and little grooming, but their short hair does not remove the proteins that cause dog allergy symptoms. They are sensitive, fast, and physically delicate, with a particular need for warmth and careful handling.

  18. Kerry Blue Terrier

The Kerry Blue’s soft, wavy coat is considered low-shedding, but it needs regular brushing, bathing, and shaping. This is a substantial, energetic terrier that benefits from structured training and may not tolerate small-pet households.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  19. Komondor

The Komondor’s heavy corded coat sheds little in the usual sense once mature, but its coat-care demands are unusual. Cords must be maintained and dried thoroughly after bathing. This independent livestock guardian is powerful, protective, and not suited to every home.

  20. Lagotto Romagnolo

The Lagotto has a dense, curly coat that generally sheds minimally. Regular brushing and clipping are essential, and the breed needs more than companion-level exercise. Its excellent nose makes scent games and searching activities particularly rewarding.

  21. Labradoodle

Labradoodles can have curly, fleece-like coats that shed relatively little, but coat and shedding patterns vary widely. No Labradoodle is guaranteed allergy-friendly. Grooming costs can be significant, and buyers should see the parents and adult relatives where possible instead of trusting labels such as “fleece” or “non-shedding.”

  22. Löwchen

The Löwchen has a long, slightly wavy coat that is usually low-shedding when groomed properly. It needs regular brushing and clipping. This small, lively companion is affectionate and trainable but still has enough energy for daily play and walks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  23. Maltese

Maltese have hair rather than a traditional shedding coat, but the long coat mats without daily care. Many owners keep it in a shorter trim. They are small, responsive companions; tear staining and dental care are practical maintenance considerations.

  24. Norfolk Terrier

The Norfolk’s wiry double coat can be maintained with hand-stripping to control loose hair. It is a sociable but energetic terrier with a strong prey drive and a tendency to bark when excited.

  25. Peruvian Inca Orchid

This breed may be hairless or coated. Hairless individuals still produce dander and saliva allergens and need protection from sun, cold, and skin irritation. Peruvian Inca Orchids can be affectionate with their families but may be reserved with unfamiliar people.

  27. Portuguese Water Dog

Portuguese Water Dogs have curly or wavy coats that are generally low-shedding. Their grooming needs are real, particularly when the coat is kept long. These energetic working dogs need swimming, retrieving, training, or another regular outlet.

  28. Puli

The Puli’s naturally corded coat sheds little once the cords form, but keeping those cords clean and dry is labor-intensive. This compact herding breed is alert, agile, and vocal, with a strong need for activity and purposeful training.

  29. Russell Terrier

Russell Terriers come in smooth, broken, and rough coat types, so shedding varies. Their small size can be misleading: they are intense, athletic working terriers with strong chasing, digging, and problem-solving instincts.

  30. Sealyham Terrier

The Sealyham has a dense, weather-resistant coat that can shed less with regular grooming and hand-stripping. It is generally steadier than some terriers but still needs daily walks, training, and coat maintenance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  31. Shih Tzu

Shih Tzus have a long, continuously growing coat that tends to shed lightly, although dander and saliva remain relevant. Daily brushing or a short professional trim is necessary. They are companion-oriented and usually prefer being near their people.

  32. Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier

The Wheaten’s soft, wavy coat is commonly described as low-shedding, but it mats easily and needs frequent brushing. This friendly terrier is energetic, playful, and sometimes exuberant well into adulthood.

  33. Spanish Water Dog

The Spanish Water Dog has a curly or woolly coat that is typically kept in a practical trim rather than brushed into a fluffy finish. It is an active herding and water dog that needs training, exercise, and a job to do.

  34. Tibetan Terrier

Despite its name, the Tibetan Terrier is a companion and former monastery watchdog, not a true terrier. Its long double coat can shed relatively little but demands regular, thorough brushing. It is intelligent, affectionate, and often alert to activity around the home.

How to choose a dog when you have allergies

  1. See an allergist first. This is especially important if you have asthma, wheezing, or a history of severe reactions. Skin-prick testing is commonly used, and an allergist may discuss component testing. Can f 5, for example, is associated with male dogs, and someone sensitized only to Can f 5 may tolerate a female dog better. That is a medical consideration—not a general rule that female dogs are safe.
  2. Meet the actual dog repeatedly. Spend extended time with the specific adult dog you may adopt, ideally indoors and on more than one occasion. A reaction to one breed representative cannot reliably predict your response to every member of that breed, and a brief visit may not reflect symptoms after prolonged exposure.
  3. Ask who will handle grooming. Low-shedding coats often require more grooming, not less. Decide whether you can manage brushing, clipping, bathing, and professional appointments. Have someone without allergies brush the dog outdoors or in a well-ventilated area when possible.
  4. Plan the house before the dog arrives. Keep the dog out of the allergic person’s bedroom, use a washable bed cover, vacuum with a high-efficiency filter, and consider continuous HEPA filtration. Restricting a dog to one room does not confine allergens to that room.
  5. Have a contingency plan. Ask the breeder or rescue about a trial arrangement where appropriate. No cleaning routine eliminates allergens, and bringing a dog home is a long-term commitment rather than a test that can always be reversed without difficulty.

Ways to reduce exposure

  • Wash hands after petting the dog and avoid touching your eyes or face.
  • Keep the dog off beds and upholstered furniture if those surfaces worsen symptoms.
  • Wash bedding regularly and use a vacuum designed to retain fine particles.
  • Groom and bathe the dog on a schedule recommended by your veterinarian or groomer; bathing reduces some surface allergen temporarily but is not a permanent solution.
  • Change clothes after heavy contact with the dog if you notice symptoms on clothing.
  • Remember that fur can carry pollen, mold spores, and dust indoors, so outdoor allergen control may matter too.

Dog allergen is found even in some homes without dogs because it can travel on clothing and other materials. Avoiding direct contact helps, but it does not guarantee a symptom-free environment.

Claims to ignore

Claim More accurate version
“This breed does not cause allergies.” No dog is allergen-free, and people react differently to individual dogs.
“The allergy is caused by hair.” The main triggers are proteins in dander, saliva, skin material, and urine. Hair can carry those proteins.
“Short-haired dogs are safer.” Hair length does not reliably predict allergen exposure.
“Hairless dogs are safe.” Hairless dogs still produce saliva, dander, and other allergenic proteins.
“Doodles are the safest choice.” Mixed-breed coat inheritance varies, so no Doodle is guaranteed low-shedding or allergy-friendly.
“You can become immune by slowly living with a puppy.” Gradual exposure is not an established do-it-yourself treatment for dog allergy.

FAQ

What is the most hypoallergenic dog breed?

There is no truly hypoallergenic breed. Poodles, Bichon Frises, Portuguese Water Dogs, Schnauzers, and several other lower-shedding breeds may be better tolerated by some people, but the individual dog and your specific sensitizations matter more than the label.

Are Poodles completely hypoallergenic?

No. Poodles usually shed relatively little, but they produce allergenic proteins in dander, saliva, skin material, and urine. Their coat can reduce loose-hair distribution without eliminating allergy risk.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are hairless dogs better for people with allergies?

Not automatically. Hairless dogs produce dander and saliva allergens, and their skin can collect allergen-containing material. They also need protection from sun, cold, and irritation.

Are Labradoodles and Goldendoodles hypoallergenic?

No. Some have low-shedding curly coats, while others have wavier or straighter coats that shed more. Coat type is variable, so meet the specific dog and do not rely on a breeder’s guarantee.

Can a female dog be better for someone with a dog allergy?

Possibly, but only in a narrow medical situation. Male dogs produce Can f 5, and people monosensitized to that allergen may tolerate female dogs better. An allergist should interpret testing; female dogs still produce other dog allergens.

Should I get a dog if I have asthma?

Discuss it with a board-certified allergist before bringing a dog home. Asthma, wheezing, or severe previous reactions make professional evaluation and an exposure plan particularly important.

The Bottom Line

Choose from these 35 breeds as a starting point for researching lower-shedding coats—not as a guarantee of allergy-free living. The safest process is to speak with an allergist, spend repeated time with the specific dog, prepare the home, and be realistic about grooming and ongoing exposure. If symptoms include wheezing or breathing difficulty, seek medical advice rather than trying to manage the risk by breed name alone.
