There is no single best probiotic for every dog: choose based on the goal, such as occasional loose stool, broader digestive support, or stress-related behavior. FortiFlora, Proviable-DC, Pro-Pectalin, Calming Care, and Visbiome Vet each suit different needs; CFU count alone does not show which product is better. Probiotics are not a substitute for veterinary care when diarrhea is severe, persistent, or accompanied by illness.
The nine products below are ranked by practical use case, not CFU count. Compare the label, strains, added ingredients, storage requirements, and evidence, and ask your veterinarian which option fits your dog.

The 9 best probiotics for dogs by use case
1. Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Supplements FortiFlora Canine Health Supplement: best for occasional diarrhea and picky dogs
FortiFlora is a practical option when a dog is reluctant to take medicine. It comes as a flavored, single-serve powder to sprinkle over food, and many dogs accept it readily because of its palatability.

#1 Best Overall
- Number 1 vet-recommended probiotic brand to support digestive health (online survey among all US vets who indicated brand as one of 1-3 brands recommended Q4 2025).
- For Dogs of All Ages: Probiotic dog powder supplement for the dietary management of puppies and adult dogs with diarrhea.
- Proven Probiotics: Dog digestive support supplement containing a probiotic for dogs proven to promote intestinal health and balance.
- Easy-to-Feed: Easy-to-Feed powder supplement includes dog immune system supporting antioxidants.
- Trusted Brand: FortiFlora digestive probiotics for dogs are developed in collaboration with Purina nutritionists, researchers and veterinarians.
- Probiotic: Enterococcus faecium SF68
- Amount: 1 × 108 CFU per sachet
- Directions: One packet daily, or as directed by your veterinarian
- Other form: A canine chewable tablet is also sold
Purina markets it for puppies and adult dogs with occasional diarrhea. Cornell lists FortiFlora among canine probiotic products with published efficacy studies, giving it a stronger evidence profile than a product supported only by a general formulation claim. See Purina’s product information and Cornell’s probiotic guidance.
Watch the label: The powder contains liver flavor and yeast, which may matter for dogs with food sensitivities or owners avoiding particular animal ingredients.
2. FortiFlora PRO Synbiotic Action: best when soluble fiber may help
PRO Synbiotic Action is not simply regular FortiFlora in a different package. Each 2-gram sachet combines SF68 with psyllium husk, a soluble fiber that can help add bulk and regulate stool in some situations.
- Probiotic: E. faecium SF68, 1 × 108 CFU per sachet
- Added fiber: 1 gram of psyllium husk per sachet
- Directions: One packet daily, or as directed by a veterinarian
This may be the more suitable FortiFlora choice when your veterinarian recommends a probiotic plus fiber. Purina lists it as a canine product available without a prescription. Check Purina’s product information.

Proviable-DC suits owners who prefer a capsule that can be swallowed whole or opened and mixed into food. It contains seven named strains and a fructooligosaccharide prebiotic.
Rank #2
- Probiotics for Dogs: Contains proven live microorganisms that promote intestinal health and balance for dogs, supporting digestive wellness and helping manage dogs with occasional diarrhea
- Chewable: Easy-to-give tablet makes daily use simple and convenient, featuring microencapsulation technology that enhances stability until reaching your dog's intestinal tract
- Quantity: 45-count canister provides over 6 weeks of daily digestive support including supplemental management of dogs experiencing digestive upset
- Immune: Supports strong immune system in dogs while promoting normal intestinal microflora
- Backed by Science: Specifically designed for dogs with occasional diarrhea and digestive upset with a safe and effective formula ideal for all dogs

- Guaranteed potency: Minimum 5 billion CFU per capsule
- Directions: One capsule daily for dogs and cats of all sizes, unless your veterinarian advises otherwise; the capsule can be opened and sprinkled on food
- Storage: At room temperature below 77°F, away from direct sunlight
Nutramax describes Proviable as backed by multiple published studies. That does not mean every strain combination is proven for every canine digestive disorder, but its identified multi-strain formula may suit routine support or diet-, travel-, and stress-related intestinal upset. See product information.
4. Nutramax Proviable-Forte Chewable Tablets: best higher-potency chewable option
Proviable-Forte is a separate product from Proviable-DC, not another name for the same product. It provides 10 billion CFU per chewable tablet and can be hand-fed or broken into food.
The chewable format is convenient for dogs that refuse powders or for households where opening capsules is inconvenient. The higher CFU number does not establish that Proviable-Forte is clinically superior to Proviable-DC. Choose it for its form and current label specifications, not simply because 10 billion is more than 5 billion. See product information.

5. Visbiome Vet: best reserved for veterinary-directed use
Visbiome Vet is a high-potency, eight-strain probiotic intended for veterinary-directed support for complex or persistent gastrointestinal problems. Its stated potency is substantially higher than that of most everyday products:
- Capsule: 112.5 billion CFU
- Packet: 225 billion CFU
- Formula: Eight-strain proprietary blend
It is shipped and stored under monitored refrigerated conditions, and temperature exposure can affect potency. It is not the obvious first purchase for a healthy dog with occasional gas. High CFU count is not a universal advantage; select it with a veterinarian, especially when chronic gastrointestinal disease is involved. See Visbiome’s pet-health information.
Rank #3
- From the makers of the number one probiotic supplement recommended by veterinarians (Kantar Veterinary Tracker, 2020)
- Probiotic supplement for the dietary management of puppies and adult dogs with diarrhea
- Contains probiotics for dogs proven to promote intestinal health and balance
- Promotes a strong immune system and contains antioxidants for dogs
- Easy-to-feed chewable probiotic tablet
6. Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Supplements Calming Care: best for stress-related behavior
Calming Care is included because not all canine probiotics target diarrhea. It contains Bifidobacterium longum BL999 and is marketed to support dogs displaying stress-related behaviors such as pacing, spinning, jumping, excessive vocalization, separation-related stress, or difficulty adjusting to changes in routine.
- Amount: 1 × 109 CFU per packet
- Directions: One packet daily
- Expected timeline: Purina says the full effect may take up to six weeks
Do not use Calming Care as a general-purpose substitute for a diarrhea product or describe it as a cure for an anxiety disorder. Purina reports improvement in anxious behaviors in 90% of dogs in a cited study; this is a manufacturer-sponsored claim based on a specific study, not proof that every anxious dog will respond. Read Purina’s product information.
7. VetriScience Extra Strength Gut Health: best for routine digestive support
VetriScience Mega Probiotic is now named Extra Strength Gut Health. The current product page describes a non-dairy, multi-strain probiotic with FOS prebiotic and 7.5 billion CFU per capsule.
It is aimed at general digestive support, occasional diarrhea, gas, and food sensitivities. Capsules may suit dogs that will not tolerate a powder but do not need a paste. A reproduced label gives weight-based directions of one capsule daily for dogs up to 40 pounds and two capsules for dogs over 40 pounds; verify the directions on the package currently sold before using those amounts. See the product page.
8. Vetoquinol Pro-Pectalin Paste: best for dogs that reject pills and powders
Pro-Pectalin is a paste rather than a high-potency probiotic supplement. Its practical value is combining a modest amount of Enterococcus faecium with kaolin and pectin in a format that can be easier to administer during short-term loose-stool episodes.
- Per mL: kaolin 0.6 g, pectin 25 mg, and E. faecium 0.2 billion CFU
- Directions: Every eight hours or as directed by a veterinarian
- Dose: Varies by the dog’s weight
Do not compare it with Visbiome solely by probiotic numbers. Pro-Pectalin is designed around a paste-and-binding-ingredient combination. VCA warns that it can interact with medications, so tell your veterinarian about every drug, vitamin, supplement, and herbal product your dog receives. See the product label information.

9. Zesty Paws Probiotic Bites: best soft chew for selective eaters
Zesty Paws Probiotic Bites may suit a dog that consistently accepts soft chews but turns away from powders and capsules. The manufacturer’s current page lists a six-strain blend, 6 billion CFU, and 50 mg of FOS in the pumpkin formula.
Pay attention to flavor. The pumpkin and chicken versions do not have identical ingredient lists, and the chicken formula includes chicken and natural chicken flavor. The manufacturer’s formulation details alone do not establish the same clinical evidence base as products with published canine studies. Check the exact package before buying, particularly if your dog has an allergy or food sensitivity. See the manufacturer’s product page.
How to choose a probiotic for your dog
- Start with the reason for using it. Choose a digestive product for digestive support, a fiber-containing product when fiber is appropriate, and a behavior-support product for stress-related goals.
- Look for a named microorganism and strain. “Proprietary blend” alone tells you less than a label that identifies the organisms and strain designations.
- Check the guaranteed live count through expiration. Look for the expiration date, exact species or strain, microorganism count, and guaranteed live-organism amount. Cornell’s guidance covers these label details.
- Match the delivery format to your dog. Powders work well for dogs that eat meals reliably, capsules can be opened for mixing, chews suit treat-motivated dogs, and paste may be easiest during an upset stomach.
- Inspect the non-probiotic ingredients. Liver flavor, yeast, chicken, dairy ingredients, fiber, kaolin, and sweeteners may matter for allergies, sensitivities, medications, or other medical conditions.
- Follow storage instructions. Some products are room-temperature stable, while high-potency products such as Visbiome Vet require careful refrigerated handling.
- Use the label and your veterinarian’s instructions. Do not increase a dose just because another product lists more CFUs. Strain, viability, formulation, and the reason for use all matter.
Are probiotics effective for dog diarrhea?
They may be useful in some cases, but the evidence does not support promising a cure. The 2024 ENOVAT/ESGVM guideline for canine acute diarrhea found the evidence balanced enough to recommend neither for nor against probiotics. A probiotic may be included in an individualized plan, but it should not be treated as proven first-line treatment for every episode. Read the guideline.
Contact a veterinarian for severe or persistent diarrhea, or if it comes with vomiting, marked lethargy, pain, dehydration, blood, loss of appetite, or a generally unwell appearance. Dogs with impaired general condition, dehydration or hypovolemia, or systemic illness need assessment and appropriate treatment, not just a probiotic.
Safety notes
Many healthy dogs tolerate canine probiotics, but “natural” does not mean appropriate for every patient. Severely immunocompromised dogs should receive them only cautiously and under veterinary supervision. Veterinary advice is also important for dogs with serious illness, suspected allergies, pregnancy, medication interactions, or worsening symptoms. Cornell discusses probiotic safety considerations.

In the United States, do not assume a product is FDA-approved because it is sold as a pet supplement. Depending on intended use and composition, animal products may be regulated as animal food or animal drugs; there is no separate FDA animal-supplement classification equivalent to the human DSHEA category. An NASC Quality Seal indicates participation in NASC’s quality-assurance program; it is not FDA approval and does not prove that a product treats a particular disease. See FDA’s explanation of pet-product regulation.
What about yogurt or a human probiotic?
Yogurt is not a dependable substitute for a canine probiotic. It may contain live cultures, but the strains, viable dose, and survival through storage are usually not equivalent to those of a veterinary product. Some dogs also react poorly to dairy.
Human probiotics should not be substituted automatically either. Assess a canine product by its named strains, label directions, canine data, added ingredients, and safety considerations. Ask your veterinarian before using a human product, especially if it contains additional herbs, sweeteners, or high doses of organisms. Proviable’s FAQ also addresses yogurt.
FAQ
Which probiotic is best for a dog with diarrhea?
For an otherwise well dog with occasional loose stool, FortiFlora, FortiFlora PRO Synbiotic Action, Proviable-DC, or Pro-Pectalin may be reasonable options depending on whether palatability, added psyllium, a multi-strain formula, or a paste is most useful. Probiotics are not proven to cure every case of diarrhea. Severe, persistent, bloody, or illness-associated diarrhea needs veterinary care.
Can dogs take probiotics every day?
Some products are labeled for daily use, but the choice and duration depend on the dog and reason for use. Follow the product label or your veterinarian’s instructions rather than combining products or increasing the dose based only on CFU numbers.
Are more CFUs better for dogs?
No. CFU count alone does not establish superiority. The specific strain, guaranteed viability through expiration, formulation, storage, and condition being addressed also matter. A high-potency product such as Visbiome Vet should generally be selected with veterinary guidance.
How long do probiotics take to work in dogs?
There is no single timeline. A digestive response may be noticed sooner, while Purina says Calming Care can take up to six weeks for full effect. If symptoms worsen or do not resolve, do not wait indefinitely or keep switching products; contact your veterinarian.

Choose a dog probiotic by purpose, strain, formulation, and reliability, not by the biggest number on the label. FortiFlora is a practical palatable choice, Proviable-DC offers a named multi-strain formula, Pro-Pectalin suits dogs that need a paste, Calming Care is aimed at stress-related behavior, and Visbiome Vet is better treated as a veterinary-directed high-potency option. None should delay care for a dog that is seriously ill or persistently symptomatic.
