It is connected to the spinal cord and, like other vertebrate brains, can be mapped broadly into forebrain, midbrain, and hindbrain. The regions work together to process sensory information and coordinate behavior, but their form and relative development vary among fish species.
How is a fish brain organized?
The brain is the enlarged front end of the central nervous system, continuous with the spinal cord. A useful introductory map divides it into three broad regions:
- Forebrain: includes the telencephalon and diencephalon.
- Midbrain: includes the optic lobes, with the optic tectum an important visual-processing structure in many fishes.
- Hindbrain: includes the cerebellum and medulla, along with connected brain-stem regions.
This is a general map, not a blueprint for every species. Fish brain anatomy varies widely, and the regions are interconnected rather than isolated modules. The scholarly overview in The Welfare of Fish describes this diversity in relation to fishes’ differing cognitive needs.
What do the different brain regions do?
Different regions contribute to different tasks, while exchanging information with one another:
#1 Best Overall
- Life Size: Life size human skull and brain model allow you clearly see all the main anatomical structures of the human skull and brain, perfect for patient education or anatomical study.
- 11 Part: The skull model consists of 3 part. The brain model consists of 8 components: sagittal section of brain, cerebral hemisphere, cerebellum and brainstem.
- Numeric Marker: The brain model features a labeled diagram for 32 numeric marker. The skull model includes a labeled diagram for 55 numeric marker.
- Material: Made of robust PVC material. Light-weight, high strength, anti-corrosion, long term service.
- Olfactory bulbs receive information related to smell.
- Optic lobes help process visual information.
- Cerebellum contributes to coordinating movement.
- Medulla and connected brain-stem regions participate in basic body functions and sensory-motor processing.
These are broad roles, not one-to-one explanations of a fish’s behavior. For example, sensory information travels along connected pathways, and behavior depends on processing across multiple areas. A review of teleost olfactory systems describes dedicated pathways for smell, while a review of teleost cognition discusses cognition as a function of interacting brain areas. Olfactory pathways review; Teleost cognition review.
Why do fish brains differ?
Fish live in varied environments and rely on senses—including smell, vision, taste, hearing, and balance—in different ways. Their brains vary in form and in the relative development of particular regions, consistent with differing sensory and behavioral demands. There is no single “typical fish brain” that captures every species.

- 【Accurate Human Brain Simulation】: The basic structure of the human brain anatomy model is 100% accurate with the life-size human brain, which is designed for medical students and clinicians; Comes with a durable base, which is convenient to show on teaching platforms or on office laboratory tables.
- 【2 Times Human Brain Anatomical Model】: The human brain model anatomy can be divided into 4 parts, the anterior lobe and brainstem are detachable, which shows the motor center, sensory center and functional center clearly.
- 【Healty Material Quality】: The Skull Models Made of green PVC plastic material. Durable, wa , Easy to clean.Due to closed space shippment, there may be some smell, but smell will fade away after putting in open air.
- 【Colored Design】: The realistic simulation human brain model is displaying and labels the functional areas of the brain with different colors accurately, which is more intuitive than books and diagrams. It is more convenient to observe the brain's internal structure and learn the human brain's knowledge.
- 【Wide Application】: Our realistic anatomy brain model can as an ideal study tool for medical anatomy teachers or students, and children's interest development learning tool, which can be used in teaching explanation, doctor-patient communication, model display, learning research or laboratory exhibition.
Variation can also occur within a species. A comparison of surface-dwelling Mexican cavefish and fish from multiple cave populations found differences in brain anatomy and neural activity associated with distinct behaviors. That finding is specific to the populations studied; it should not be generalized to all fish. Mexican cavefish study.
What can a fish brain tell us about fish intelligence?
A fish’s learning and behavior are better understood as the work of connected systems than as the activity of one human-like “thinking” part. Reviews of teleost cognition describe processing across multiple brain areas, and sensory pathways show how information is relayed and integrated. This supports careful discussion of learning and behavior, but it does not mean that all fish species have the same cognitive abilities.

When comparing fish brains, consider the same questions for each example:
- Which senses are especially relevant to the species or population?
- Which brain regions differ in size, form, or specialization?
- What environment and behavior were examined?
- Does the evidence compare different species or populations within one species?
