How do salmon mate?
Salmon mate in freshwater through external fertilization. A female digs a gravel nest, called a redd, and releases eggs into it while one or more males release sperm-containing milt over the eggs. The sperm enters the eggs after they contact water, and the female covers the fertilized eggs with gravel.
The process is usually called spawning rather than mating because the salmon do not transfer sperm inside the female’s body. The female and male release their reproductive cells into the water, where the eggs and sperm meet outside the body. NOAA Fisheries’ salmon life-cycle guidance describes adult salmon returning to freshwater to reproduce.
Do salmon mate in the water?
Yes. Salmon mate in freshwater, usually over a gravel streambed. The female positions herself in the redd and releases eggs, while a male releases milt close to the eggs. Water activates the reproductive cells and allows sperm to reach the eggs, but fertilization takes place outside the female’s body.
#1 Best Overall
The female may spawn with more than one male, and males may spawn with several females. This behavior is documented for pink salmon and means that a single group of eggs can be exposed to sperm from more than one male. The number of participating fish and the details of spawning vary among species and populations.
What happens during salmon spawning?
Salmon spawning follows a sequence that connects migration, nest building, fertilization, and egg protection.
| Stage | What happens | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Return to freshwater | Adult salmon travel from the ocean or another feeding area to a freshwater stream, river, or spawning ground. | Salmon eggs and early young require freshwater conditions. |
| Redd construction | The female beats her tail against gravel to excavate a depression. The depression is called a redd. | The gravel nest provides a place for the eggs to settle. |
| Egg and milt release | The female releases eggs while a male releases milt, the sperm-containing fluid. | Eggs and sperm are placed close together in flowing freshwater. |
| External fertilization | Sperm enters the eggs after the eggs contact water. | The embryo begins developing without fertilization inside the female. |
| Gravel covering | The female digs again, dislodging gravel that the current washes over the eggs. | The gravel helps hold the eggs in place and protects them during incubation. |
| Incubation and hatching | Eggs develop among the gravel, hatch, and may remain there briefly before young salmon emerge. | Temperature, dissolved oxygen, and gravel conditions affect development. |
The Alaska Department of Fish and Game’s pink salmon life-history material explains that the female selects the spawning site, digs the redd, releases eggs, and helps cover them. The gravel is not a random hiding place: it is part of the salmon’s reproductive strategy.
What are a salmon redd and milt?
A redd is the gravel depression a female salmon makes for depositing eggs. The female creates the redd by striking and moving gravel with her tail. After releasing eggs, she excavates again so loosened gravel is carried over the eggs.
Milt is the sperm-containing fluid produced by a male salmon. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game defines milt as “the fluid containing sperm that male salmon produce” in its Pacific Salmon Biology teacher guide.
How do salmon fertilize their eggs?
Male salmon fertilize eggs by releasing milt over freshly deposited eggs in the redd. Fertilization is external: sperm does not enter the female before the eggs are released. According to Alaska Department of Fish and Game guidance, one sperm enters a narrow canal in an egg shortly after the egg is laid; after water triggers a reaction in the egg membrane, the canal closes.

Timing is therefore important. In classroom incubation guidance, Alaska Department of Fish and Game reports that fertilization can occur in approximately 15 to 20 seconds after water activates mixed salmon gametes under hatchery-handling conditions. That figure describes a controlled procedure, not a universal stopwatch measurement for every natural redd. The classroom salmon egg incubation guide provides that hatchery context.
Early development also depends on conditions. Alaska Department of Fish and Game classroom material reports that the first egg-cell divisions can take about 10 to 25 hours depending on water temperature. Natural incubation time varies with species, temperature, dissolved oxygen, and the condition of the gravel.
Do salmon lay eggs or give birth?
Salmon lay eggs; they do not give birth to live young. A female releases eggs into the gravel redd, and the eggs are fertilized externally by milt from one or more males. The embryos develop inside the eggs, which remain in the gravel until they hatch.
Newly hatched salmon can remain among the gravel for a period before emerging. The length of time that young salmon stay in freshwater after emergence also varies by species: some move toward the ocean relatively quickly, while others remain in freshwater for several years.
How many eggs does a salmon lay?
There is no single egg count for every salmon. Egg production depends on species, the female’s size, and the population. The following figures are species-specific examples rather than a universal salmon average.
| Salmon example | Reported egg count | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Atlantic salmon | About 7,500 eggs on average | NOAA Fisheries’ Atlantic salmon science page; an average for Atlantic salmon, not all salmon species. |
| Several salmon species | About 2,000 to 5,000 eggs | Alaska Department of Fish and Game’s Pacific Salmon Biology teacher material; a broad educational range. |
| Pink salmon | About 800 to 2,000 eggs | Alaska Department of Fish and Game’s pink salmon material; specific to pink salmon. |
Producing thousands of eggs does not mean that thousands of adult salmon will result. Eggs and young salmon face changing water conditions, limited oxygen, predators, disease, and other hazards during development.

When do salmon mate?
Salmon mating, or spawning, can occur in spring, summer, fall, or winter depending on the species and geographic population. Many Pacific salmon populations spawn during summer or fall, while Atlantic salmon commonly spawn in fall. A month that applies to one salmon population should not be treated as a universal salmon spawning date.
Spawning timing is linked to the conditions needed for eggs and young salmon. Adults migrate to suitable freshwater habitat, reproduce, and leave the eggs in gravel where water can flow through the nest. NOAA’s salmon life-cycle overview covers the seasonal variation in salmon reproduction.
How do salmon find their way back to mate?
Salmon generally home to freshwater spawning areas, often including the watershed where they were born. Adult salmon can return from the ocean to rivers and streams, then attempt to reach appropriate spawning habitat despite rapids, waterfalls, predators, and dams.
The broad answer is that salmon return to their natal stream or birth watershed, but the exact homing process is not identical for every species or population. A general explanation should not assign one sensory mechanism or one success percentage to all salmon without species-specific evidence.

Before spawning, salmon undergo major physical changes and stop behaving like ocean-feeding fish. These changes support migration and reproduction, but the journey can leave adults exhausted and vulnerable after spawning.
Do salmon die after mating?
No, not all salmon die after mating. Most Pacific salmon reproduce once and generally die after spawning, while some Atlantic salmon survive spawning and return to reproduce again.
Rank #4
| Salmon group | Typical post-spawning outcome | Term |
|---|---|---|
| Pacific salmon | Most reproduce once and generally die after spawning. | Semelparity |
| Atlantic salmon | Some survive spawning and can return to spawn in later years, although repeat spawners have become increasingly uncommon. | Iteroparity |
Pacific salmon bodies can return nutrients to the freshwater ecosystem after death. Atlantic salmon are different. The U.S. Geological Survey explains that, unlike Pacific salmon, Atlantic salmon do not die after spawning and can repeat the spawning cycle for several years. “Unlike Pacific salmon, Atlantic salmon do not die after spawning, so adults can repeat the spawning cycle for several years.” Survival is possible, not guaranteed, and repeat spawning is less common than a first spawning event.

Pacific and Atlantic salmon share external fertilization in freshwater, but they differ in survival after spawning, typical timing, egg production, and the amount of time juveniles spend in freshwater.

| Comparison | Pacific salmon | Atlantic salmon |
|---|---|---|
| Fertilization | External fertilization in a freshwater redd. | External fertilization in a freshwater spawning area. |
| After spawning | Generally die after reproducing once. | Some survive and spawn again; repeat spawners are increasingly uncommon. |
| Spawning season | Many populations spawn in summer or fall, but timing varies by species and location. | Commonly spawn in fall, with geographic variation. |
| Egg production | Varies by species and female; pink salmon examples range from about 800 to 2,000 eggs. | NOAA Fisheries reports about 7,500 eggs on average for Atlantic salmon. |
| Juvenile freshwater period | Can range from a short interval to several years depending on species. | Freshwater residence also varies with life history and population. |
These differences are why “salmon” should not be treated as one reproductive pattern. Species and geographic population matter when discussing spawning dates, egg numbers, migration, or post-spawning survival.
What happens to salmon eggs after fertilization?
Fertilized eggs remain in the gravel redd while embryos develop. Flowing water supplies oxygen, and the gravel helps keep the eggs from being swept away. Temperature, dissolved oxygen, water movement, and gravel conditions influence incubation and hatching.
When the eggs hatch, the young salmon may continue developing within the gravel before emerging. Later, juvenile salmon grow in freshwater and may undergo smoltification, the physiological transition that enables movement from freshwater toward saltwater. The salmon life cycle then continues through ocean growth and an adult return to freshwater.
