What fish do you catch in the Gulf of Mexico? Common catches include red drum, spotted seatrout, black drum, sheepshead, pompano, cobia, Spanish mackerel, red snapper, groupers, snappers, amberjack, tuna, and dolphinfish. Inshore habitats produce different fish from offshore reefs, and current regulations determine which fish may be kept.
NOAA Fisheries says more than 100 fish species are available to saltwater recreational fishermen at some time of year. The useful answer is not one enormous list: the likely catch changes according to habitat, distance from shore, depth, season, bait, current, and jurisdiction.
Key takeaways
- Inshore Gulf fishing commonly produces red drum, spotted seatrout, black drum, sheepshead, pompano, cobia, Spanish mackerel, and tarpon.
- Offshore reefs, wrecks, ledges, and hard bottom commonly hold red snapper, groupers, snappers, greater amberjack, gray triggerfish, and tilefish.
- Open-water Gulf targets include king mackerel, Spanish mackerel, blackfin tuna, dolphinfish, billfish, and sharks.
- NOAA Fisheries says more than 100 fish species are available to saltwater recreational fishermen at some time of year, according to its 2017 Gulf recreational fisheries snapshot.
- A fish being present in the Gulf does not mean the fish may be kept; seasons, size limits, bag limits, closures, and state-versus-federal jurisdiction must be checked for the exact trip.
What fish do you catch in the Gulf of Mexico from shore or inshore?
From shore, in bays, in marshes, around passes, and in other inshore water, anglers most often encounter red drum, spotted seatrout, black drum, sheepshead, pompano, ladyfish, cobia, Spanish mackerel, and tarpon. The exact catch changes with habitat, tide, water temperature, salinity, bait, and season.
| Inshore or coastal fish | Where anglers commonly find them | Typical opportunity |
|---|---|---|
| Red drum, or redfish | Marshes, bays, passes, beaches, and shallow coastal water | Shore, kayak, small boat, and inshore trips |
| Spotted seatrout | Seagrass, marsh edges, shallow bays, and estuarine structure | Flats, bays, and estuary fishing |
| Black drum | Oyster bars, passes, estuaries, and bottom habitat | Bottom fishing around hard structure |
| Sheepshead | Pilings, bridges, jetties, oyster bars, and nearshore hard bottom | Structure fishing from shore or boat |
| Pompano | Beaches, surf, passes, and shallow coastal water | Surf and seasonal nearshore fishing |
| Ladyfish | Coastal and estuarine water, especially during warmer periods | Active light-tackle fishing |
| Cobia | Buoys, boats, rays, shoreline features, and other nearshore structure | Visual sight-fishing and nearshore trips |
| Spanish mackerel | Nearshore water, passes, bait schools, and current edges | Warm-season coastal pelagic fishing |
| Tarpon | Passes, beaches, bays, channels, and coastal current | Specialized sport fishing, often catch-and-release |
Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission guidance identifies red drum, spotted seatrout, black drum, cobia, pompano, sheepshead, Spanish mackerel, and tarpon among common Gulf-region opportunities. The Florida agency’s where-to-fish guidance is useful for understanding how bays, beaches, passes, estuaries, and offshore areas differ.

What fish do you catch in the Gulf of Mexico offshore?
Offshore anglers commonly catch reef fish such as red snapper, red grouper, gag grouper, black grouper, gray snapper, lane snapper, vermilion snapper, mutton snapper, greater amberjack, gray triggerfish, and tilefish. These fish are generally associated with hard bottom, reefs, wrecks, ledges, artificial structure, and deeper water.
| Offshore group | Representative Gulf catches | Primary habitat |
|---|---|---|
| Snappers | Red snapper, gray snapper, lane snapper, vermilion snapper, mutton snapper, and yellowtail snapper | Reefs, ledges, wrecks, artificial reefs, and hard bottom |
| Groupers | Red grouper, gag grouper, black grouper, scamp, yellowfin grouper, and yellowmouth grouper | Hard-bottom relief, reefs, ledges, and deeper structure |
| Structure fish | Greater amberjack and gray triggerfish | Wrecks, reefs, offshore relief, and other structure |
| Deepwater species | Tilefish and deeper-water grouper species | Specialized deepwater habitat |
NOAA Fisheries’ current federally managed Gulf reef-fish list contains 31 managed species, including red snapper, several groupers and snappers, greater amberjack, hogfish, tilefish, and gray triggerfish. The list describes species subject to federal management; it is not a guarantee that every species is open for harvest on a particular date.
Which pelagic fish can you catch in the Gulf?
Pelagic fish spend much of their time in the water column rather than remaining on the bottom. Gulf anglers commonly target king mackerel, Spanish mackerel, blackfin tuna, and dolphinfish, also called mahi-mahi. Anglers may additionally encounter sailfish, marlin, swordfish, and several shark species.
- King mackerel: Often found around bait, current edges, passes, nearshore structure, and offshore water.
- Spanish mackerel: Frequently available closer to shore than king mackerel, particularly during warm-season migrations.
- Blackfin tuna: An offshore target associated with deeper structure, current, and concentrated bait.
- Dolphinfish: Commonly associated with floating debris, weed lines, current edges, and other offshore structure.
- Billfish and sharks: These include specialized and highly regulated fisheries in which access, gear, reporting, seasons, and retention rules vary by species.
For anglers who mainly want to identify sharks, tunas, or billfish, the NOAA and Rhode Island Sea Grant waterproof guide to sharks, tunas, and billfishes of the U.S. Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico is a more focused reference than a general Gulf fish guide.

- Portable Travel Kit with Carrier Bag: The telescopic fishing rod collapses down to just 17 inches long, making it compact and convenient to carry. Comes with a portable carrier bag, making it easy to take hiking, camping, or on any fishing adventure
How does location change the fish you catch?
Location changes the catch because each Gulf habitat concentrates different food, shelter, salinity, depth, and water movement. A shallow marsh edge can produce redfish and spotted seatrout, while a deep artificial reef may produce red snapper, grouper, amberjack, or triggerfish.
| Fishing area | Representative fish | What most affects the result | Common access |
|---|---|---|---|
| Marshes, estuaries, and bays | Red drum, spotted seatrout, black drum, ladyfish | Tide, salinity, water temperature, grass, and marsh structure | Shore, kayak, small boat |
| Oyster bars, bridges, jetties, and passes | Sheepshead, black drum, red drum, tarpon, Spanish mackerel | Current, tide, hard structure, and bait | Shore or inshore boat |
| Beaches and surf | Pompano, red drum, Spanish mackerel, tarpon | Surf conditions, water temperature, current, and migrating bait | Shore or small boat |
| Nearshore structure | Cobia, Spanish mackerel, king mackerel, snapper | Warm water, bait schools, current, and visible structure | Small or larger boat |
| Reefs, wrecks, and ledges | Red snapper, grouper, snapper, amberjack, triggerfish | Depth, bottom relief, current, bait, and weather | Offshore boat, charter, or headboat |
| Open Gulf and floating structure | Blackfin tuna, dolphinfish, king mackerel, billfish, sharks | Current edges, weed lines, debris, temperature, and forage | Specialized offshore boat or charter |
Florida’s Gulf state waters extend from shore to 9 miles, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. That 9-mile boundary applies to Florida’s state-water guidance and should not be treated as a universal boundary for every Gulf state, location, or species. Check the applicable jurisdiction before fishing or keeping a fish.
Why is red snapper such a famous Gulf fish?
Red snapper is a signature Gulf reef fish because adults commonly occupy conspicuous hard structure and support a major recreational fishery. NOAA Fisheries describes adult red snapper habitat as generally ranging from 30 to 620 feet, including artificial reefs, rocks, ledges, caves, and other bottom relief.
According to NOAA Fisheries’ red snapper species profile (2026), approximately 11.4 million pounds of recreational red snapper were landed in 2024. NOAA also reports that the Gulf red snapper stock was not overfished and was not subject to overfishing based on 2023 catch data, while remaining under a rebuilding plan.

Red snapper illustrates the difference between asking what fish live in or can be caught in the Gulf and asking what fish can be kept today. A red snapper may be legally catchable under one sector’s rules and closed under another sector’s rules, so anglers must check the current federal and state requirements for the vessel, location, date, and fishing sector.
Can you keep every fish you catch in the Gulf of Mexico?
No. A species being present in the Gulf does not make that fish legal to retain. Minimum and maximum size limits, bag limits, possession limits, seasons, area closures, gear rules, reporting requirements, and special release requirements can apply.
NOAA’s current Gulf regulations page lists species-specific examples including a scheduled 2026 recreational gag season opening on September 1 after a January 1–August 31 closure; greater amberjack closures from August 1–August 31 and November 1–July 31; gray triggerfish closures from January 1 through the end of February and June 1–July 31; and a red grouper closure from February 1–March 31. The gag season was identified as subject to finalization after data are received, so anglers should not rely on these examples as a permanent calendar.
Before keeping a fish, consult NOAA’s current Gulf fishing regulations and seasonal closures and the relevant state agency’s rules. Florida anglers can use the Florida saltwater recreational fishing regulations; anglers in other Gulf states need the rules for their own state and fishing location.

How many kinds of fish are in the recreational Gulf fishery?
According to NOAA Fisheries’ Gulf of Mexico Saltwater Recreational Fisheries Snapshot (2017), more than 100 fish species are available to saltwater recreational fishermen at some time of year. The figure includes a broad recreational fishery rather than a promise that all species are available from every beach, bay, reef, or boat trip.
NOAA Fisheries summarized the importance of that fishery by stating, “In the Gulf of Mexico, thriving recreational fisheries support vibrant coastal economies.” The practical meaning for an angler is that the Gulf offers many different fisheries, but the best target depends on habitat, season, access, and current regulations.
How can you identify an unfamiliar Gulf fish?
Use a regional identification guide to confirm the species before checking its regulations, especially when several snappers, groupers, drum, or mackerel look similar. An optional reference is Angler’s Guide to Fishes of the Gulf of Mexico, a Gulf-specific identification book suited to anglers who want illustrations and species diagnostics. The book is an identification aid, not a current regulations guide; always verify the fish’s rules through the applicable state and federal agencies.
A narrower reference, Saltwater Fishes of Texas & the Gulf States, is designed around nearshore species from Texas to Alabama. That regional focus may be useful for a shore or inshore angler, but it should not replace current regulations or a broader offshore identification reference.

What is the simplest way to choose a Gulf fishing target?
Choose the habitat you can safely and legally reach, then select a species associated with that habitat rather than expecting one setup to catch every Gulf fish.
- Fishing from a beach, jetty, bridge, or pass: Start with pompano, red drum, sheepshead, black drum, Spanish mackerel, or tarpon where locally available.
- Fishing a bay, marsh, flat, or estuary: Red drum, spotted seatrout, black drum, and ladyfish are representative targets.
- Fishing nearshore structure: Cobia, Spanish mackerel, king mackerel, and some snapper species may be available around bait and current.
- Taking an offshore reef trip: Red snapper, grouper, snapper, greater amberjack, and gray triggerfish are representative structure-associated targets.
- Fishing open water or floating debris: Look for dolphinfish, blackfin tuna, king mackerel, sharks, or billfish, subject to the appropriate rules and equipment.
- Before keeping anything: Identify the species, confirm the location and jurisdiction, and check current size, bag, season, closure, gear, and reporting rules.
The Gulf of Mexico offers fish for shore anglers, kayak anglers, inshore boaters, offshore private vessels, charters, and headboats. The most reliable answer is therefore habitat-based: shallow coastal water favors drum, trout, sheepshead, pompano, cobia, and mackerel, while offshore structure favors snapper, grouper, amberjack, and triggerfish, and open water favors tuna, dolphinfish, mackerel, billfish, and sharks.
