Scientists really did teach rats to operate tiny cars, and enriched-housing rats learned the task more effectively than standard-housed rats in a peer-reviewed 2020 study. Later observations suggested that some rats eagerly anticipated driving, but the evidence does not prove that rats felt human-like joy or understood engines and automobiles.

The viral headline combines two related findings. The original University of Richmond experiment examined learning and environmental enrichment. Later observations by behavioral neuroscientist Kelly Lambert explored motivation and anticipation after trained rats appeared eager to enter the vehicle and, in one small choice test, sometimes selected a longer route that included driving.

Key takeaways

  • University of Richmond researchers trained rats to operate a custom vehicle using copper bars, electrical circuits, and food rewards.
  • The peer-reviewed 2020 study found that rats raised in enriched environments learned the driving task more effectively than standard-housed rats.
  • Researchers defined robust driving as completing four consecutive driving trials after the rats learned the basic controls.
  • In a later, very small motivation observation, two of three rats chose a longer route that included driving instead of a shorter walking route.
  • The evidence suggests that driving became a motivating, rewarding activity for at least some rats; it does not prove human-like joy or show that rats understand cars, engines, or traffic.

Did scientists really teach rats to drive tiny cars?

Yes. Researchers at the University of Richmond trained rats to operate small, custom-built vehicles rather than simply carrying the animals around in toy cars. The rat-operated vehicle was made from a clear plastic food container mounted on wheels, with an aluminum floor and three copper bars that functioned as controls.

When a rat touched or gripped the relevant bars, the animal completed an electrical circuit that moved the vehicle. Trainers gradually shaped the behavior: first encouraging the rat to enter the vehicle, then to touch the controls, move forward, and steer toward a food reward. A small piece of Froot Loops cereal was commonly used as the reward, as described in the University of Richmond’s report on the experiment.

The rats did not drive a road car, follow traffic rules, or understand an automobile in the human sense. “Driving” means that the rats learned a sequence of paw-controlled actions that made a laboratory vehicle move and, in related training, helped direct it toward a target.

What did the original rat-driving experiment test?

The original experiment primarily tested whether environmental enrichment affected the acquisition of a complex learned skill. The peer-reviewed study, Enriched Environment Exposure Accelerates Rodent Driving Skills, compared rats housed in stimulating environments with toys, more space, social companions, and opportunities for movement against rats kept in standard laboratory cages.

The animals in the primary study lived in their assigned enriched or standard environments for approximately four months before driving training. The researchers then assessed behaviors such as entering the vehicle, touching the control bars, completing forward movement, and performing full driving trials.

According to the peer-reviewed Behavioural Brain Research study, robust driving was defined as four consecutive driving trials after the rats had acquired the fundamental controls. Rats from enriched housing performed better on several measures, including vehicle entry, control-bar touches, and full drives.

Original study and later motivation report compared

Evidence Main question Evidence type Main outcome Interpretive confidence
2019–2020 driving study Does environmental enrichment affect learning a complex vehicle task? Peer-reviewed experimental paper Enriched-housing rats acquired the published driving criteria more effectively; driving training was also associated with a favorable change in a measured stress-related hormone relationship. Strongest for learned vehicle operation and the relationship between enrichment and task acquisition.
Later motivation observations Do trained rats show eagerness or preference for the driving experience? Researcher-authored 2024 account and small behavioral observation Rats appeared eager to enter and activate the controls; two of three reportedly chose a longer route involving driving. Suggestive of motivation or anticipation, but too limited to prove subjective human-like enjoyment.

Why did scientists teach rats to drive?

Scientists taught rats to drive because operating a vehicle requires a more complicated combination of abilities than pressing a lever or finding a route through a conventional maze. A rat must coordinate posture, paw movements, control activation, directional behavior, spatial navigation, reward learning, and persistence.

Kelly Lambert, a University of Richmond professor of behavioral neuroscience, explained the motivation this way: “We already knew that rodents could recognize objects, press bars, and find their way around mazes, but we wondered if rats could learn the more complex task of operating a moving vehicle.” The quotation appears in the University of Richmond announcement.

The driving paradigm may help researchers study how environmental experience affects learning, motor control, flexible behavior, stress-related biology, and neural adaptability. The researchers have suggested that richer tasks could provide a more nuanced preclinical model for studying complex learned behavior and motivation than a single, highly repetitive laboratory response.

Do rats actually enjoy driving tiny cars?

Some of the trained rats appeared motivated by the activity, but the experiment did not prove that rats experience driving as humans do. The strongest evidence for enjoyment comes from later observations of eagerness and choice, combined with the rats’ willingness to perform the learned sequence before receiving a reward.

In a 2024 researcher-authored account, Lambert described trained rats running to the side of their cage and jumping when she entered the laboratory during the COVID-19 pandemic period. She then described a choice test in which rats could walk directly to a Froot Loop reward or take a less efficient route that involved entering the vehicle and driving. Two of the three rats selected the longer driving route.

That result is consistent with driving having motivational value for those animals. It may also indicate positive anticipation: the rats appeared to respond to cues that predicted a preferred activity. However, a two-of-three observation is a very small behavioral demonstration, not a broad statistical claim about rats as a species. The account was also a researcher-authored follow-up rather than a definitive demonstration of subjective joy.

Lambert summarized the observation by writing, “Unexpectedly, we found that the rats had an intense motivation for their driving training — something we wanted to learn more about.” That statement and the route-choice description are reported in the University of Richmond Impact account.

What does “revving the engine” mean in the rat experiment?

“Revving the engine” is a catchy description of rats activating the lever-like control before the vehicle began its run. The behavior does not show that the rats understood an engine or consciously imitated a human driver.

A careful interpretation is that some rats eagerly entered the vehicle and activated its control system in anticipation of the learned activity. The rats learned that their paw or grip on the copper bars would initiate movement, so pre-run control activation could reflect excitement, persistence, anticipation, or simply a strongly learned response.

“The rats did not drive a road car or understand traffic; they learned to operate a custom laboratory vehicle through paw-controlled electrical bars. Their eagerness to enter, activate the controls, and sometimes choose a longer driving route suggests that the activity itself had motivational value.”

Did driving make the rats less stressed?

The original study reported a favorable change in the DHEA/corticosterone relationship after driving training, and the researchers interpreted that change as a healthier stress-related hormonal profile. The finding is biologically interesting, but “driving made rats less stressed” is too broad as a stand-alone conclusion.

The study was not a human clinical trial, and the hormone result does not establish that driving treats anxiety, depression, or any other mental-health condition. Housing conditions, training, handling, reward exposure, and other aspects of the laboratory procedure all matter when interpreting the result. The primary paper is the appropriate source for the study design and hormone findings; its conclusions should not be converted into a treatment recommendation.

Lambert’s broader interpretation is that positive experiences deserve attention alongside fear and stress. “While it’s vital to study negative emotions such as fear and stress, positive experiences also shape the brain in significant ways,” she said in the University of Richmond follow-up account.

What did the rat-driving experiment prove—and what did it not prove?

The evidence supports The evidence does not establish
Rats can learn to operate a custom vehicle through a sequence of motor actions. Rats can drive conventional cars or navigate public roads.
Rats can acquire forward-driving behavior and, in related training, steer toward targets from different starting positions. Rats understand engines, automobiles, destinations, traffic, or driving laws.
Enriched-housing rats learned the published driving criteria more effectively than standard-housed rats. Driving is a proven treatment for human depression, anxiety, Parkinson’s disease, or another disorder.
Driving training was associated with a favorable change in measured stress-related hormone profiles in the original study. The rats’ behavior proves subjective, human-like joy.
Later observations suggest that at least some trained rats were motivated by, and may have anticipated, the driving experience. Every rat enjoys driving, or that the custom vehicle is a suitable pet product for home use.

What was the later “Wait For It” rat research about?

The later work broadened the question from learned driving skill to anticipation of positive experiences. Lambert described a “Wait For It” or UPER program—Unpredictable Positive Experience Responses—in which rats waited for positive events signaled by environmental cues.

One protocol described placing a Lego block in the cage and waiting 15 minutes before giving the rats a Froot Loop. Lambert reported preliminary shifts toward more optimistic responses and improved performance on some cognitive tasks. Those findings should be described as preliminary. They do not validate a treatment or show that anticipation operates identically in rats and humans.

The driving observations helped motivate interest in how positive experiences and anticipation might influence behavior and neural function, but the later account should remain distinct from the original peer-reviewed vehicle-learning experiment. The 2024 account of the anticipation research provides that later context.

What does rat driving have to do with depression and neuroscience?

Rat driving matters to neuroscience because the task combines environmental enrichment, motor learning, navigation, reward, persistence, and flexible behavior in one observable activity. Researchers can use such tasks to ask how experience changes performance and stress-related biology.

The translational claim must remain modest. Rat studies can help isolate behavioral and biological mechanisms, but a result in rats does not automatically transfer to human mental-health treatment. The defensible conclusion is that the rat-driving paradigm may offer a novel preclinical model for studying complex learned behavior, motivation, environmental enrichment, and neural flexibility.

Can you buy the tiny car the rats drove?

No ordinary rat-operated vehicle equivalent to the University of Richmond laboratory device has been established as a commercially available pet product. The research vehicle was a custom apparatus built for the experiment, and generic remote-control cars, children’s toy cars, or pet toys would not be accurate substitutes.

Pet owners should not try to reproduce the electrical control system or train a rat to operate an improvised vehicle at home. The study involved specialized equipment, shaping procedures, controlled rewards, and research oversight. Froot Loops were experimental rewards, not a recommendation for routine feeding. Pet rats need an appropriate species-specific diet, and any enrichment should be safe, supervised, and suitable for the individual animal.

What can readers learn from Kelly Lambert’s broader work?

Readers who want more context on Lambert’s approach to laboratory rats, stress, learning, and behavior can look for The Lab Rat Chronicles: A Neuroscientist Reveals Life Lessons from the Planet’s Most Successful Mammals. The book is a broader discussion of rat research and human lessons, not a verified step-by-step manual for building or operating a rat car.

Why the headline needs a qualification

Scientists really did teach rats to operate tiny cars, and enriched living conditions improved acquisition of the task in the original peer-reviewed study. Later observations suggested that some rats were eager to drive and sometimes preferred a longer route that included the vehicle.

The most accurate wording is that the rats learned a complex, rewarding laboratory behavior and appeared motivated by the experience. “They love revving the engine” is an entertaining shorthand, but it goes beyond the evidence if it is taken to mean that rats consciously understand automobiles or feel human-like joy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did scientists really teach rats to drive?

Yes, researchers trained rats to operate custom laboratory vehicles, but the rats did not drive conventional cars. The vehicles used copper bars and electrical circuits that allowed the animals to initiate movement and, with related training, steer toward targets.

Do rats actually enjoy driving tiny cars?

The best evidence suggests that at least some trained rats found the learned activity motivating: two of three rats reportedly chose a longer route involving driving over a shorter walking route. That very small observation suggests positive anticipation but does not prove human-like joy.

Can I buy the tiny car the rats drove?

No commercially available pet product equivalent to the custom research vehicle was established by the reviewed sources. Generic toy cars and remote-control vehicles are not substitutes, and pet owners should not reproduce the electrical apparatus at home.

Why would scientists teach rats to drive?

The original study investigated whether environmental enrichment affected acquisition of a complex learned skill and also measured stress-related hormone changes. The study may inform neuroscience research, but it did not show that driving treats depression or anxiety in humans.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Rats really learned to operate custom wheeled vehicles, and enriched housing helped them acquire the skill. Later observations—including two of three rats choosing a longer driving route—suggest that some rats found the activity motivating. The research does not prove human-like happiness, ordinary car-driving ability, or a treatment for human mental-health conditions.
