Ring Cameras Can Now Recognize Faces and Help Find Lost Dogs: What the Features Actually Do

Ring’s Familiar Faces and Search Party are separate features: one personalizes alerts for known people, while the other looks for possible lost-dog matches through participating U.S. Ring cameras. Here are the supported devices, subscription rules, privacy controls, geographic restrictions, accuracy limits, and the role of a Ring Pet Tag.

Ring cameras can now recognize faces and help to find lost pets through two separate features: Familiar Faces identifies people a user has added to a private library, while Search Party uses participating Ring cameras to look for a possible match to a reported lost dog. Neither feature provides guaranteed recognition or continuous tracking.

That distinction matters. Familiar Faces is about personalized alerts for known people; Search Party is about community-assisted recovery after someone reports a missing dog. The features have different hardware requirements, subscription rules, privacy controls, and limitations.

Key takeaways

  • Ring’s Familiar Faces recognizes people added to a user-managed library of up to 50 profiles and can replace generic alerts with personalized names.
  • Ring’s Search Party looks for possible matches to a reported lost dog in recordings from participating Ring doorbells and outdoor cameras in the United States.
  • Familiar Faces requires a compatible Ring subscription or qualifying service, while Ring says users can start a Search Party without a subscription.
  • Familiar Faces is unavailable in Illinois, Texas, Portland, Oregon, and Quebec because of stated legal restrictions.
  • Search Party is not GPS tracking, continuous pet monitoring, guaranteed identification, or automatic footage sharing.

How are Ring cameras able to recognize faces and help find lost pets?

Ring cameras can now recognize faces and help to find lost pets through two separate features: Familiar Faces identifies people a user has added to a private library, while Search Party uses participating Ring cameras to look for a possible match to a reported lost dog. Neither feature provides guaranteed recognition or continuous tracking.

Familiar Faces is a human-recognition feature for personalized visitor alerts. Search Party is a community-assisted lost-dog search. Search Party does not identify people, and Ring’s materials do not say that it tracks a pet continuously or shares video automatically with the person who reported the dog.

What is the difference between Familiar Faces and Search Party?

Familiar Faces and Search Party use different targets, workflows, hardware, and privacy controls. Treating them as one “Ring facial recognition” system creates a misleading picture of what Ring cameras do.

Feature Familiar Faces Search Party
Target People the account owner has identified A reported lost dog
Primary purpose Personalized visitor alerts and less notification clutter Community-assisted lost-dog recovery
Hardware Eligible 2K and 4K devices plus selected 1080p devices Ring doorbells and eligible outdoor cameras
Subscription Compatible Ring subscription or qualifying service required Ring says starting a Search Party requires no subscription
Current geography Availability has stated exclusions in parts of the United States and Canada Current support documentation lists availability in the United States
User control Opt-in profiles, profile deletion, and per-face management Camera-owner participation, sharing decisions, and an opt-out control
Main limitation Misidentification and sensitivity to viewing conditions Possible matches only; no guaranteed detection or live tracking

Can Ring cameras recognize familiar faces?

Yes. Familiar Faces can recognize people whom the account owner has added to the Ring app and can turn an alert such as “Person at Front Door” into a personalized alert such as “Chris at Front Door.” Ring says users can create a directory of up to 50 familiar faces, including family members, neighbors, and regular delivery drivers.

Familiar Faces is opt-in. Ring’s Familiar Faces support documentation says the feature is available on 2K and 4K devices and selected 1080p devices, but requires a compatible Ring subscription or qualifying service.

How accurate is Ring Familiar Faces?

Ring Familiar Faces is not guaranteed to identify someone correctly. Ring states in its support documentation: “Recognition results might vary, and misidentification can occur.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Recognition performance can change with distance, lighting, camera height, face coverings, movement, and viewing angle. Ring’s stated operating guidance says higher-resolution cameras can generally recognize people from about 9–13 feet in suitable conditions, while standard 1080p cameras have a more limited range of about 6 feet. Those figures are Ring’s guidance, not the result of an independent performance test.

Familiar Faces should therefore supplement—not replace—ordinary security judgment. A personalized “Chris at Front Door” alert is useful context, but the alert should not be treated as proof that the person is Chris.

Where is Familiar Faces available?

Ring’s current support documentation says Familiar Faces is unavailable to customers in Illinois, Texas, and Portland, Oregon, and unavailable to Canadian customers in Quebec because of specific legislation. Availability can also depend on the device, subscription or qualifying service, app version, and local requirements.

Ring recommends notifying people whose faces are saved and checking local consent laws before enabling the feature. That recommendation is not a universal legal conclusion: consent and biometric-privacy requirements vary by jurisdiction. Ring’s current eligibility and privacy guidance should be checked alongside applicable local law.

How does Ring Search Party find lost dogs?

Search Party begins when someone creates a Lost Dog Post in the Ring app. Eligible participating Ring doorbells and outdoor cameras then use AI to look through available recordings for a possible match to the reported dog.

If a camera detects what might be the missing dog, the camera owner receives an alert with a picture of the dog and relevant camera footage. The camera owner can ignore the alert or choose to share information with the neighbor who reported the dog. Ring describes the feature in its Search Party support documentation as a possible-match workflow, not as live location tracking.

Which Ring cameras support Search Party?

Search Party is currently listed as available to neighbors in the United States on Ring doorbells and eligible outdoor Ring cameras. Stick Up Cam and Outdoor Cam devices must have their installation type set to Outdoor.

Compatible category listed by Ring Important condition
Ring doorbells Ring lists all Ring doorbell models as a compatible category in its pet-safety documentation
Floodlight Cam Ring lists Floodlight Cam models as compatible categories
Spotlight Cam Ring lists Spotlight Cam models as compatible categories
Stick Up Cam The installation type must be set as Outdoor
Outdoor Cam The installation type must be set as Outdoor

Device eligibility, geography, app settings, and current feature availability all matter. Ring’s pet-safety documentation provides the relevant current hardware and Search Party information; check the live Ring app before relying on a particular camera for a neighborhood search.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Ring Search Party require a subscription?

Ring says Ring users can initiate a Search Party without a subscription. The camera owner’s ability to receive or use other Ring features can still depend on the device, account, plan, and available recording features, so “no subscription to initiate” does not mean every Ring camera function is subscription-free.

Participation is voluntary. Camera owners can disable “Search for Lost Pets” in the Ring app’s Control Center, and a camera owner decides whether to share a possible-match snapshot or video with the person who reported the dog.

  • Enhanced motion detection — Be alerted to motion faster from your smartphone with dual-zone, enhanced motion detection.
  • Person detection — Get alerts when a person is detected with embedded computer vision (CV) as part of an optional Blink Subscription Plan (sold separately).

What does Search Party actually prove?

Search Party can surface a possible sighting from participating cameras, but a notification is not proof that the dog has been identified or found. The system may not detect a missing dog, may produce a false match, and cannot search cameras that are unavailable, not participating, outside the relevant area, or lacking useful footage.

Ring does not provide an independent controlled study, independently audited success rate, or comparative benchmark for Search Party in the sources reviewed. Ring reported that Search Party helped bring home more than one dog per day in 2026, an early company-reported result described in its February 2, 2026 update. The figure is not a general accuracy rate.

Ring also said that the Ring Neighbors app had received over 1 million lost-or-found-pet posts in 2025, referring to the preceding year in Amazon’s September 30, 2025 announcement. That figure indicates the scale of pet-related activity on the platform; it does not measure Search Party’s success rate.

What are the privacy implications of Familiar Faces?

Familiar Faces uses facial-recognition information. Ring says profiles and facial-recognition information are encrypted and stored in the cloud rather than on Ring devices. The account owner controls the feature and can delete profiles.

Ring’s support documentation says the Familiar Faces library is limited to 50 profiles. Unnamed profiles can be removed after 30 days without recognition, and profiles are automatically deleted after 180 days without recognition. These retention behaviors make it important to review the library regularly rather than treating it as a permanent directory.

Before saving someone’s face, notify that person and consider local consent and biometric-privacy rules. Do not add people merely because a camera has recorded them; Familiar Faces is intended for a user-managed library of people the account owner knows or expects to see.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How does Search Party handle privacy?

Search Party has a different privacy model from Familiar Faces. Search Party looks for a possible lost-dog match in participating camera footage, and the camera owner—not the missing-pet reporter—receives the possible-match alert first.

The camera owner can ignore the alert or choose whether to share the relevant snapshot or video. Ring presents participation as optional and provides a Control Center setting to disable Search for Lost Pets. Search Party therefore does not mean that every participating camera automatically sends footage to a stranger.

When should you use a Ring Pet Tag as well?

Search Party helps search for a dog after the dog is missing; a physical Ring Pet Tag gives a finder a direct way to contact the owner. Ring describes the tag as a small metal collar tag with a QR code linked to a Pet Profile. A finder can scan the code with a phone, view the available lost-pet information, and contact the owner without needing the Ring app.

Ring says the owner’s name and phone number are not shared directly through that workflow. The tag does not activate Search Party, enable facial recognition, provide GPS tracking, or guarantee that a lost dog will be recovered. It is a prevention-and-recovery tool that complements, rather than replaces, a community camera search.

A microchip, current contact information, a secure collar, and—where appropriate—a separate GPS pet tracker can provide additional recovery options. Those tools are not described as integrated with Search Party in the official materials reviewed.

When did Ring announce these features?

Ring introduced the two capabilities in stages rather than as one single system:

Date Ring announcement or status
September 30, 2025 Amazon announced Ring’s first 4K camera line, Familiar Faces, and the AI-assisted lost-pet feature
December 9, 2025 Ring announced the U.S. rollout of Familiar Faces, including personalized alerts and the 50-profile directory
February 2, 2026 Ring announced broader Search Party availability and reported more than one dog brought home per day
August 14, 2026 Current Ring support documentation listed U.S. Search Party availability and Familiar Faces eligibility, restrictions, controls, and accuracy caveats

Ring’s original September 30, 2025 announcement and December 9, 2025 Familiar Faces announcement provide the rollout context. App updates, device support, subscription terms, and local law can change availability, so verify current details before purchasing or enabling a feature.

What should Ring owners do before relying on these features?

  1. Check whether the Ring account, camera model, installation type, location, and subscription meet the current eligibility requirements.
  2. For Familiar Faces, enable the feature only if appropriate for the household and local law, then add and review profiles carefully.
  3. Tell people whose faces are saved and remove profiles that are no longer needed.
  4. For Search Party, create a Lost Dog Post if a dog goes missing and provide a clear, current description and image.
  5. Keep Search Party’s limits in mind: a possible match is not a guaranteed sighting, and the system is not live GPS tracking.
  6. Use independent recovery measures, such as a current pet profile, collar identification, microchip, or suitable GPS tracker.

Are Ring’s new recognition features worth using?

Familiar Faces can be useful for households that want named visitor alerts and accept the privacy and accuracy trade-offs of cloud-based facial recognition. Search Party can add a potentially valuable community search channel for a missing dog, particularly where participating Ring cameras are present.

Neither feature should be treated as a security guarantee or a substitute for responsible pet identification. Frequently Asked Questions

Can Ring cameras recognize familiar faces?

Yes. Ring’s Familiar Faces feature can recognize people that an account owner adds to a library of up to 50 profiles and can personalize alerts such as “Chris at Front Door.” Familiar Faces is not available everywhere and can misidentify people.

Does Ring Search Party require a subscription?

Ring says starting a Search Party does not require a subscription. Search Party availability and other camera functions still depend on the device, location, app settings, and current Ring service terms.

Which Ring cameras support Search Party?

Search Party is currently listed by Ring as available in the United States on Ring doorbells and eligible outdoor cameras. Stick Up Cam and Outdoor Cam devices must be configured with their installation type set as Outdoor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I turn off Ring Search Party?

Yes. Camera owners can disable “Search for Lost Pets” in the Ring app’s Control Center. Participation and the decision to share a possible-match snapshot or video are controlled by the camera owner.

The Bottom Line

Ring’s face-recognition and lost-pet features solve different problems. Familiar Faces recognizes user-labeled people, with a 50-profile limit, subscription and geographic restrictions, and a risk of misidentification. Search Party looks for possible lost-dog matches on participating U.S. Ring cameras, without requiring a subscription to start a search, but it is neither live tracking nor guaranteed identification. A Ring Pet Tag can provide a separate direct-contact route if a finder scans the collar tag.
