How pet tracking actually works
There are three separate features that are easy to confuse:
- Motion tracking: the camera’s motor pans and tilts to follow movement. Wyze says basic tracking for people, pets, and vehicles does not require a paid subscription.
- Smart detection: software identifies the type of moving object and can support alerts or event handling. Wyze says AI smart detection is associated with eligible Cam Plus plans.
- Recording: footage must be saved either locally to a microSD card or through a supported cloud-storage plan.
So, “subscription-free pet tracking” does not mean unlimited free cloud history, free AI alerts, or guaranteed recognition of an individual dog or cat. A pet can be followed without a subscription, but retaining the footage still requires local storage or an eligible cloud feature.
Tracking can also lose effectiveness when a pet moves behind furniture, leaves the camera’s view quickly, remains still, or shares the scene with multiple moving subjects. Low light, glare, reflections, and visually similar objects may also interfere. Wyze’s feature description does not establish a guaranteed accuracy rate.

Basic person, pet, and vehicle motion tracking does not require a paid subscription. However, Wyze says the Pan v4 does not include cloud storage or subscription-based smart detection by default.
- No subscription: basic motion tracking is available, but cloud history and subscription-based AI features are not included.
- With a microSD card: the camera can record locally, including continuous recording, without relying on cloud storage.

4K video: useful, but not magic
4K can preserve more detail in a live view or recording, particularly when digitally zooming in on a pet or person. That may help you see what an animal is doing across a large room or examine an event after it happens.
But 4K resolution alone does not guarantee better identification at night, smooth tracking in poor lighting, or stable streaming on every network. It may also increase bandwidth and storage demands. The supplied product information does not establish the camera’s frame rate, bitrate, codec, zoom limits, or whether every cloud recording mode preserves the same quality as the original feed.

How much area can it cover?
Wyze advertises a 360-degree horizontal pan and 180-degree vertical tilt. That gives the camera a broad mechanical range and lets it follow a moving pet around much of a room or yard.
It does not see every direction at once. The lens still has a limited instantaneous field of view, and the motor must move to follow a subject. If the camera turns toward a cat crossing the room, it may temporarily point away from a doorway, crate, or another pet. Shelves, walls, ceiling mounts, nearby objects, and the camera’s own placement can also restrict the advertised range.
Can you use it outdoors?
Wyze lists an IP65 weather rating and says the camera can be mounted upright or upside down for outdoor use. IP65 is not an immersion rating, so the camera should not be placed where it can sit in water or experience exposure beyond the manufacturer’s installation guidance.
Outdoor use also requires three things beyond the camera itself: a reliable power connection, strong Wi-Fi at the mounting location, and a clear view. A mesh node or stronger access point may matter more than the camera’s 4K capability if the signal is weak. The camera is weather-rated, not battery-powered, so outdoor installation still needs a suitable power arrangement.

Night vision, spotlight, and siren
Wyze advertises color night vision, enhanced infrared night vision, and a motion-activated spotlight. These features can make a pet easier to see after dark and may provide useful deterrence. The camera also has a listed 100-decibel siren.

Keep these recording options distinct:
- 24/7 local recording: continuous footage saved to the microSD card.
- Event-only local recording: selected events saved locally rather than a complete timeline.
- Cloud event clips: footage stored through a supported cloud service and subject to that service’s rules.
- AI alerts: notifications based on supported smart-detection features, generally associated with an eligible plan.
- Long-term backup: an off-site copy, which local storage alone does not provide.
Local storage is not the same as backup. If the camera is stolen, damaged, or the card fails, locally stored footage may be lost or inaccessible. A full or corrupted card can also prevent the recording behavior you expected.
Connectivity and setup
The camera supports 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi 6 when used with a Wi-Fi 6 router. Wi-Fi 6 is an option, not a requirement. A stable 4K live view still depends on signal quality, router performance, and available upload bandwidth.
