To set up an automatic fish feeder, mount it securely over a clear opening, load food the model can dispense, set its clock and feeding schedule, then test and adjust the portion before relying on it. The crucial step is calibration: a feeder’s opening measures volume, not a guaranteed serving, and too much food can foul aquarium water.
What you need
- An automatic feeder suited to your tank, food, and feeding schedule.
- Fresh batteries or the manufacturer-approved power adapter.
- The dry food your fish already eat.
- A secure mounting point or compatible aquarium-lid opening.
- A small, dry container for checking test portions.
Automatic feeders release dry food at preset times. Models differ in capacity, number of daily feedings, portion adjustment, mounting, power, food compatibility, and features such as manual feeding or app alerts. Check the specific model’s manual: a feeder that accepts flakes may not handle every pellet, granule, or freeze-dried food.
Before you install it
Check the food and schedule
Use a food format the manufacturer approves and that your fish already accept. Small, dry granules or pellets often dispense more consistently than flakes, but this is model- and food-dependent. Fluval, for example, recommends small- to medium-sized granules for consistent feeding with its PF2 feeder. EHEIM’s standard autofeeder documentation lists flakes and granulates, but excludes live and frozen food.
Check how many feedings the feeder supports and whether its schedule matches your fish’s normal routine. Do not increase the daily ration simply because the feeder allows more events. Some models use a 24-hour cycle: the PF2, for instance, cannot be set to feed every 48 hours.

Check the tank opening and location
Confirm that the feeder fits a hood opening or has a suitable bracket for an open-top tank. Make sure it will be stable if you lift or move the lid, and leave room to remove its drum or battery cover. Position the outlet over a spot where food can fall straight into the water, not onto glass, plastic, or equipment.
Keep the motor, electronics, and air intake away from splashes and humid air. EHEIM warns that its drive unit and reverse air-intake opening should not sit in the aquarium’s humid-air section; the air intake must not be covered. Avoid locations where condensation or a filter outlet can dampen the food.

How to set up the feeder
- Mount it securely. Attach the feeder according to its manual, over a clear feeding opening. Check that the drum can turn freely and that the outlet is unobstructed. Food should reach the water where your fish normally feed. A surface feeder may be straightforward to serve this way; sinking-food or bottom-feeding needs may require another method or a feeder designed for that use.
- Install the power source. Put fresh batteries in the correct orientation, or connect only the supplied or manufacturer-approved adapter. Check that the display or indicator powers up. Keep electrical connections away from water and use a drip loop on a power cable where appropriate. Battery models can run through an aquarium power outage, but batteries can still weaken; mains-powered smart models depend on household power and may also depend on network or app availability.
- Set the current time. Many digital feeders need the clock set before you program feedings. Button sequences differ, so use the manual for your exact model. As one example, EHEIM’s documented 3581 sequence is to insert batteries, press SET until the hour flashes, adjust with +, press MODE to select minutes, adjust, then press SET to store the time.
- Load the usual dry food. Remove the drum or container as directed. Make sure it is clean and completely dry, then add the food your fish already eat. Refit the cover and drum securely. Do not introduce an unfamiliar food just before a trip: fish may reject it, and it may dispense differently from the food used for calibration.
- Start with a small opening. Set the slider or dispensing opening conservatively. A slider position is not a standard dose: output changes with food size, shape, density, and moisture. A double-feed function usually means two mechanical releases, not a carefully measured larger serving.
- Program the normal feeding schedule. Match the tank’s established routine rather than adding feedings for convenience. Model limits vary: EHEIM’s 3581 supports up to four feeding times per day and can make one or two releases per event; the Fluval PF2 supports up to two feedings per day on a 24-hour cycle. Check the manual for your feeder’s controls and limits.
- Run a manual test. Use the test or manual-feed function. Confirm that the drum completes its movement, food exits, and it lands in the aquarium. Check the portion, listen for an unusual jam, and make sure no food catches on the lid. The EHEIM 3581 manual documents a dedicated button for triggering a manual feed.
- Observe scheduled feedings before depending on it. Run the feeder for several days and watch at least one scheduled meal. Confirm the food stays dry, the fish eat it normally, and the daily total is right. Adjust the opening in small steps and test again.
For a longer absence, testing once is not enough. Aqueon recommends testing an automatic feeder before departure and arranging for someone to check it every few days during a longer trip (Aqueon guidance on uneaten food).
How to calibrate the portion
Use your fish’s normal meal as the benchmark, not a universal pellet count or a marking on the slider.

- Feed the fish their usual food by hand and observe how much they consume completely.
- Use the same food in the feeder. Trigger a manual cycle over the tank, or catch the output in a dry container.
- Compare the feeder’s output with the normal meal. Reduce the opening if there is uneaten food; increase it gradually only if the amount is clearly too small.
- Repeat the test over several cycles, because flakes and irregular foods can dispense unevenly.
Aqueon gives two to three minutes as a general observation window for feeding and advises starting with a small amount; remove uneaten food rather than leaving it to pollute the tank (Aqueon’s feeding guidance). Treat that window as a general starting point, not a species-specific prescription. Fry, sick fish, herbivores, nocturnal fish, marine invertebrates, and animals with specialized diets may need different food or timing.
Which foods work in automatic feeders?
- Granules and pellets: Often easier to portion consistently than flakes when the size suits both the feeder opening and the fish. Follow the model’s instructions and test the actual food you plan to use.
- Flakes: Some conventional feeders accept them, but flakes may absorb humidity, bridge inside a chamber, break into dust, or release uneven portions. Trial them for the full period you intend to use the feeder.
- Freeze-dried food: Compatibility is model-specific. Large or irregular pieces may jam even when the food format is listed as suitable.
- Frozen or live food: A standard rotating dry-food feeder is generally not appropriate. EHEIM explicitly excludes live and frozen food from the approved use of its standard autofeeder.
Keep the chamber closed except when filling it, and relocate the feeder if its food becomes damp. Never assume a food is compatible just because it fits inside the drum.

Using an automatic feeder before a trip
A feeder is a portion-control device, not a substitute for checking the aquarium. For a brief absence of two or three days, many healthy adult fish may not need a feeding arrangement at all; this depends on species, life stage, health, stocking, and tank conditions. Fry, fish with specialized diets, and sick or medically dependent fish may need a different plan. See Aqueon’s travel guidance for the qualifications.
For a longer trip:
- Run the feeder on its intended schedule for several days before leaving.
- Use familiar food and avoid a large “extra” meal before departure.
- Check the filter, heater, water level, and feeder position. Avoid adding fish or making major aquarium changes just before leaving.
- Consider a water change and appropriate filter maintenance about a week beforehand, but do not disturb biological media or make risky last-minute changes. Aqueon’s vacation tips recommend planning maintenance ahead.
- Ask a trusted person to inspect the tank every few days on a longer absence. Leave clear instructions and pre-measured backup portions so the sitter does not guess or overfeed.
When you return, check the fish, filter flow, heater, and water level, then resume the normal feeding schedule. If the trip was extended or food was left uneaten, check water quality and address any deterioration; after a week-long absence, Aqueon advises a water change within a few days.

Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely causes | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| No food comes out | Dead or reversed batteries; drum not seated; blocked outlet; damp or unsuitable food; motor fault. | Do not rely on the feeder. Check power, reseat the drum, empty and dry the chamber, replace clumped food, and test manually. Arrange a human backup if you are away. Do not open the motor unless the manufacturer permits it. |
| Too much food comes out | Opening too wide; double-feed enabled; multiple events programmed; food differs from the test food. | Reduce the opening, check the schedule and repeat-feed setting, then recalibrate using the actual food. Remove visible leftovers and check water quality if substantial food was released. Return to an appropriate schedule rather than arbitrarily starving the fish. |
| Too little food comes out | Food bridging, pieces too large, opening nearly closed, or food damp. | Use dry food of a suitable size, empty and dry the chamber, and enlarge the opening gradually. Test repeatedly before leaving; do not compensate with a setting that could dump an excessive amount. |
| Food is wet or clumped | Humidity, condensation, or splash reaching the feeder. | Move the feeder away from humid air and splashes. Keep the motor and air intake clear, and refill only a dry chamber with dry food. |
| Food lands on the lid | Outlet is not over the opening or the feeder has shifted. | Reposition or secure the feeder so food falls freely into the water. Use a compatible opening or bracket rather than a precarious extension. |
| Fish ignore the food | The food is unfamiliar, unsuitable, or delivered where fish cannot find it. | Do not rely on it during a trip. Introduce new food gradually and confirm acceptance in advance; Fluval also advises acclimating fish to granules or pellets before a vacation (Fluval vacation advice). |
| Battery or Wi-Fi fails | Weak batteries, power loss, network trouble, or app/service dependence. | Check the model’s alerts and power requirements before relying on remote features. Use fresh batteries or approved power, and maintain a person who can inspect the tank on longer trips. |
When a feeder is not the best choice
A fish sitter is usually safer for fry, breeding tanks, multiple aquariums with different diets, fish needing frozen or live food, and long absences. Give the sitter pre-measured meals rather than an open container of food; Aqueon warns that inexperienced sitters may overfeed.
A dissolving vacation food block is different from a timed mechanical feeder. It may suit some compatible fish and stable tanks, but it does not deliver individually timed portions and leftovers can affect water quality. Test any block in advance, follow its product instructions, and remove remnants as directed. For some healthy adult fish on a short trip, no feeding may be safer than an untested feeder or block. Neither option is universal.
If your feeder supports only a 24-hour schedule, do not assume it can deliver food every other day. For example, the PF2 cannot be programmed for a 48-hour interval. When the schedule or diet does not fit the equipment, choose a sitter or another species-appropriate plan.
