How Furbo Turned a Treat-Tossing Dog Camera Into Tomofun’s Startup Breakthrough

Furbo’s startup story combines a dog-specific product, a costly treat-tossing redesign, crowdfunding, Amazon reach and a newer AI subscription layer.

Tomofun’s Furbo began with a familiar worry: what happens to a dog after its owner leaves home? Founded in Bellevue, Washington, in 2014 by Victor Chang and Maggie Cheung, the company turned that concern into a connected camera built specifically for dogs. Its early story is as much about a costly product-design correction and smart distribution choices as it is about AI or celebrity exposure.

What did Tomofun build?

Furbo combined a wide-angle camera, two-way audio, a phone app and a treat dispenser. Owners could check the camera, speak to a dog and remotely toss a treat. The idea grew from the founders’ experience leaving their toy poodle, Gobi, at home: they wanted a way to see and interact with him while away.

That origin is an emotional insight, not evidence that Furbo clinically treats separation anxiety. The product gives owners a way to monitor and interact with a pet; it is not an autonomous dog sitter. As Chang acknowledged in GeekWire’s February 1, 2018 profile, a camera cannot take a dog outside to urinate.

Why make it specifically for dogs?

Tomofun’s early positioning was dog-first rather than a single camera marketed for every kind of pet. Chang described canine specialization as the company’s “secret sauce”: the product and its marketing could center on dog behavior, with treat tossing making the interaction easy to understand. A defined audience can make a product’s purpose clearer, but it also narrows the initial market. Furbo’s present lineup is broader than that early positioning and includes cat-oriented products, according to its official U.S. comparison page.

How did crowdfunding help launch Furbo?

Tomofun used a 2016 Indiegogo campaign to help fund the product and introduce the brand before retail launch, according to the GeekWire profile. In this account, crowdfunding served two jobs: financing and early exposure. It was not simply a substitute for venture capital.

The available profile does not establish the campaign’s amount raised, backer count, fulfillment record or how closely crowdfunding demand predicted later retail sales. Those figures should not be inferred from the fact that the campaign helped bring Furbo to market.

What did the treat-design mistake teach the company?

The original Furbo dropped treats rather than tossing them. Customer feedback showed the distinction mattered: owners expected a toss, not a drop. Tomofun redesigned the hardware after investing substantially in research and development, Chang told GeekWire.

This became the clearest product lesson in the company’s early story. A feature that seems like a small implementation detail can define the experience a customer believes they bought. With physical products, discovering that mismatch after engineering and tooling is costly. Tomofun said it subsequently formalized customer feedback and validation exercises every two weeks.

For a treat-dispensing camera, useful validation goes beyond asking whether the mechanism works. It can test whether treats fit, whether the toss is consistent and useful to dogs, where owners place the camera, whether sound and alerts help, and whether the app behaves reliably. It should also probe safety and usage expectations, including treat suitability and overfeeding.

How did Amazon and television amplify awareness?

Chang identified Amazon’s Exclusives program as a consequential decision. He said the marketplace offered global reach and marketing exposure while Tomofun continued to sell through its own website. The arrangement illustrates why a marketplace can help a hardware startup reach customers without building a physical retail network first.

The trade-off is less control. Marketplace dependence can expose a business to fees, changing policies, copycats, price competition and weaker control over customer relationships. GeekWire reported that Furbo was the top-selling dog camera on Amazon Prime Day in 2017; that is a dated, profile-reported milestone, not a current ranking or independently established market-share measure.

Furbo also appeared on The Ellen Show in 2017. The product was suited to demonstration: viewers could quickly understand a camera that dispensed treats, and pets made an emotionally legible story. GeekWire’s Furbo coverage referred to an “Ellen effect,” but the available figures do not support a precise sales increase. Publicity may reduce skepticism and raise awareness, but the profile does not show that television exposure alone created durable demand.

What did AI add—and what does it mean now?

In the 2018 profile, Furbo’s AI could detect barking, pacing and chewing and send alerts. That was an extension of the original proposition: not just letting an owner look in, but notifying them about selected activity.

Furbo’s current U.S. product ecosystem places more monitoring features in Furbo Nanny subscriptions. The company lists AI-powered alerts, video history, activity reports, abnormal-behavior and home-safety alerts, as well as features such as Calm My Pet and an AI Health Checker on its plan page. These are company-described capabilities, not proof of medical diagnosis or guaranteed emergency detection. How has the business model changed?

The early story centered on selling a novel camera. The current U.S. model combines hardware with an optional paid layer for enhanced monitoring. Furbo says basic live viewing, communication and treat interaction can be used without a subscription; enhanced alerts and video history are among the subscription features. The following are U.S. prices displayed on official Furbo pages in August 2026, not guaranteed future prices. Promotions may differ or change.

The annual figures are offers, not the standard month-to-month rates. Furbo’s pages also display promotional pricing and a 60-day-free-code offer; neither should be treated as a permanent term. A buyer weighing the system should count both the camera and the recurring plan rather than comparing hardware prices alone.

What does Furbo’s case show—and what does it not prove?

The early company story supports a practical set of lessons for founders working on consumer hardware:

  • Start with a specific, recurring concern. The founders translated owners’ worry about pets alone into a product with a readily understood use.
  • Make differentiation visible. Treat tossing gave Furbo a more demonstrable interaction than a passive camera, provided the mechanism matched customer expectations.
  • Validate the experience before committing deeply to hardware. The drop-versus-toss redesign shows why customer interpretation matters before engineering decisions become expensive.
  • Use channels for more than checkout. Crowdfunding supplied exposure as well as funding; Amazon offered discovery and reach, while also creating platform risks.
  • Treat attention as a signal, not proof of durable economics. Prime Day and television exposure are milestones, but they do not establish retention, margins or sustainable demand.
  • Make recurring value explicit. AI alerts and video history create an ongoing service proposition, but customers must judge whether that value merits an ongoing fee.

The evidence is thinner on the company’s results than on its product story. GeekWire’s 2018 profile reported about 50 employees and a Furbo price of about $200 at that time. Those are historical figures, not current company metrics. The profile does not provide verified revenue, margins, customer retention, valuation or market share, so it cannot establish Tomofun’s present commercial performance.

What should a pet owner consider before buying?

Furbo is most relevant to owners who want to check in remotely and value two-way interaction or treat tossing. The rotating 360° model is the more natural fit for an open room and full treat capacity; the Mini 360° offers a smaller treat system, while the Mini is for owners who do not need treat tossing. A static live camera may be enough if monitoring alone is the goal, and a subscription may be unnecessary for someone satisfied with basic viewing and communication.

  • Treats must fit the dispenser and should not create a choking or overfeeding risk.
  • A camera does not replace exercise, bathroom breaks, supervision or veterinary care.
  • Alerts may be triggered by ordinary noise or miss events; do not rely on them as guaranteed detection.
  • Placement matters: a dog may obstruct, knock over or chew a camera.
  • Review privacy, cloud-video retention and account-security terms before connecting a camera; the cited sources do not provide an independent privacy or security assessment.

Furbo is best understood as a purpose-built remote interaction product whose commercial proposition has expanded from hardware into paid monitoring features. Its startup story is strongest as a lesson in focus and hardware validation—not as proof that publicity, AI or a marketplace alone guarantees a successful business.
