Are Gorillas Left-Handed or Right-Handed? What the Evidence Shows

Gorillas show individual, task-dependent hand preferences. Coordinated two-hand behaviors often reveal a right-hand bias, but simple reaching does not produce a universal species-wide preference.

Gorillas are neither uniformly left-handed nor uniformly right-handed. Individual gorillas may prefer the left hand, the right hand, or show little consistent preference. Across studies, a right-hand bias appears most reliably during coordinated, structured actions that require both hands, while simple reaching often produces no overall species-wide bias.

There is no single “gorilla-handedness”

Hand preference can be measured at two different levels. An individual gorilla may use one hand more often for a particular activity, but that does not mean every gorilla in the species shares the same dominant hand. Population-level handedness means that, taken together, significantly more animals favor one hand.

Gorilla results change with the behavior being tested. A gorilla may reach with either hand, then consistently use one hand to hold food while using the other to manipulate it. Researchers therefore distinguish between unimanual actions, such as a simple reach, and bimanual actions, in which the hands perform coordinated but different roles.

What studies find for different behaviors

Behavior or comparison Sample and finding What it means
Spontaneous food reaching 31 captive lowland gorillas (Annett and Annett, 1991): animals ranged from strongly left-preferent to strongly right-preferent, with most showing intermediate levels of preference. No overall species bias; the group was approximately divided between left- and right-preferent animals.
Unimanual reaching 35 captive gorillas (Meguerditchian and colleagues, 2010): “No population-level manual bias was found for unimanual actions.” A simple one-handed reach does not reliably identify gorillas as right-handed.
Coordinated bimanual feeding The same 35-gorilla study found significant population-level right-handedness when one hand held or framed food while the other processed it. Right-hand preference is stronger when the task requires coordinated hand roles.
Comparative bimanual actions A study of 777 great apes reported population-level right-handedness in gorillas, chimpanzees and bonobos; orangutans were left-handed in that comparison. Some structured two-hand behaviors reveal a broader rightward pattern among several great-ape species.
Structured actions and hand transfers 13 western lowland gorillas showed a significant population-level right-hand bias in a 2013 study. Naturally organized, multi-step actions can expose a bias that casual reaching misses.

Why some studies disagree

Not every coordinated task produces a statistically significant result. An earlier tube-task study of 31 captive gorillas found only a nonsignificant trend toward right-handedness. That result is compatible with a real tendency that is too small, too variable, or too dependent on the exact procedure to appear consistently in every experiment.

Studies also differ in whether behavior is spontaneous or experimentally structured, how many animals are observed, which captive group they come from, and how an individual preference is classified statistically. A result from one task should not be generalized to every activity a gorilla performs.

Do individual gorillas keep the same preferred hand?

Often they do not. In a study of 22 captive gorillas, 10 showed no preference across the tested behaviors, while most of the others preferred one hand for only one behavior. A task-comparison study of three adult gorillas likewise found that increasing complexity did not automatically produce a right-hand bias. Its authors summarized the result this way: “a subject can be right-handed for a complex task and left-handed for another one.”

This task-specificity is why labels such as “left-handed gorilla” or “right-handed gorilla” need a qualification: they should identify the behavior and the conditions in which the preference was observed.

Are gorillas ambidextrous?

“Ambidextrous” is not a precise biological category in these studies. Some gorillas use both hands about equally for a given task, and others switch hands between tasks. That flexibility can look ambidextrous, but it may reflect the demands of the action rather than an absence of all hand preference. A gorilla that reaches with either hand may still favor one hand for feeding, transferring an object, or another coordinated sequence.

What about gestures and communication?

Hand preference is not limited to manipulating food or objects. Research on 35 captive gorillas compared manual signals with manipulative actions and found stronger right-lateralization for gestures than for manipulators. The pattern also changed with the interactional context and with whether a signal was directed toward another gorilla or toward a human. Before filtering, the dataset contained 7,421 conspecific-directed manipulators and 1,407 human-directed gestures.

This distinction matters because communication and object handling may involve different neural and social demands. A rightward bias in gestures should not be treated as proof that every other manual behavior is right-handed.

How to interpret the evidence

  • Simple reaching: usually provides weak or inconsistent evidence for a population-wide right bias.
  • Coordinated two-hand actions: more often produce significant right-hand effects in gorillas.
  • Individual preferences: can be left, right, mixed or absent, and may change with the task.
  • Structured versus spontaneous behavior: organized sequences may reveal lateralization that casual observation does not.
  • Communication versus manipulation: gestures can be more right-lateralized than object-directed actions.

Bottom line

Gorillas do not all share one dominant hand. The best-supported conclusion is that handedness is task-dependent and individual: many studies find a right-hand bias during coordinated bimanual or other structured actions, while simple reaching often shows no overall species bias. A gorilla can favor the right hand for one activity, the left for another, or show no stable preference at all.
