Jackie and Shadow’s eaglets Gizmo and Sunny took their first flights in June 2025. They are no longer getting ready to fledge: this is a look back at their season, with safe ways to follow the Big Bear eagles today. In 2026, the pair’s eaglets were Sandy and Luna, and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) reported that Jackie died on August 9, 2026.
When did Sunny and Gizmo fledge?
Both eaglets fledged in June 2025, leaving the nest for their first flights. Accounts differ on the exact dates: Destination Big Bear reported Gizmo’s first flight on June 6, followed shortly by Sunny, while the For Jackie timeline gives Sunny’s flight as June 2 and Gizmo’s as June 7. Without a resolved official event log, the reliable shared point is that both flew in June.
Who were Jackie and Shadow’s 2025 eaglets?
Gizmo and Sunny were the two surviving eaglets from the pair’s 2025 hatch. The For Jackie timeline says a third chick, Misty, died after a March snowstorm. The timeline also reports that schoolchildren chose the names Sunny and Gizmo from 54,000 name submissions; that figure is its retrospective account, not an independently verified official contest tally.
They are distinct from Sandy and Luna, the eaglets named in 2026. Friends of Big Bear Valley (FOBBV) reported that elementary students named Sunny and Gizmo the previous year; its April 2026 release says the 2026 naming contest received 63,915 submissions and produced the names Sandy and Luna.

How can you watch the Big Bear eagles?
Watch FOBBV’s nest cameras
The Friends of Big Bear Valley operates the Big Bear eagle cameras. FOBBV says its first nest camera was installed in 2015 and a second, wide-view camera in 2021; both were designed to be safe for wildlife and people. Its April 2026 press release describes the livestreams as free of advertisements. Check the FOBBV website for current camera access and updates.
Watch wildlife from public areas
If you are visiting Big Bear Lake, use designated public areas, obey posted closures, and keep well away from the nest. Discover Big Bear Lake says the precise nest location is intentionally not shared publicly to reduce disturbance. An outdoor sighting is never guaranteed; the livestream is the way to see the nest without approaching it. Binoculars can be useful for general bird watching in public areas, but they are not needed for the camera and do not ensure an eagle sighting.

What to know about the nest and fledging
FOBBV’s FAQ gives January through April as the regional egg-laying period and says incubation lasts 35 days or more from the start of full incubation. Big Bear eagles delay full incubation until the clutch’s last egg is laid, which tends to bring hatchlings closer together in age. These are general nesting details, not a specific schedule for Sunny and Gizmo.
Fledging is a milestone, not a guarantee that young eagles immediately become fully independent. The available accounts establish when Sunny and Gizmo first flew, but do not provide a detailed, verified account of their later development. The nest is part of a wild population, so outcomes and camera access can change.

- 【12.9-INCH BALD EAGLE THAT DESERVES THE SPACE】Some spaces do not need more small decor; they need one strong focal point. Standing 12.9 inches tall, this bald eagle statue brings a proud, commanding presence to a home office, study, desk, bookshelf, display cabinet or mantel without overwhelming the room.
- 【SCULPTED DETAIL WITH WEATHERED CHARACTER】Layered feathers, alert eyes, a curved golden beak, textured talons and a rugged branch-and-root base give this resin eagle figurine depth from every angle. Subtle tonal and brush variations in the hand-painted finish create a naturally weathered, time-worn character—like an eagle marked by wind, wilderness and years of endurance.
- 【MADE FOR A ROOM WITH SOME WEIGHT TO IT】The upright eagle silhouette pairs naturally with warm wood, leather, books, framed photographs, awards and other collected objects. It feels especially at home in masculine office decor, executive workspaces, home libraries and quiet studies where one distinctive piece can add character without adding clutter.
- 【A SYMBOL FOR MILESTONES THAT WERE EARNED】More than patriotic decor, the bald eagle represents freedom, perseverance, independence and strength. It makes a meaningful recognition gift for fathers, husbands, eagle collectors, veterans, leaders or retirees—especially when the occasion marks years of service, hard-earned achievement or a new chapter worth remembering.
- 【DESIGNED TO HOLD UP IN PERSON】The 12.9-inch freestanding form is designed to have the same substantial presence in the room that draws you in on screen. From the sculpted silhouette to the branch-and-root base, the details are made to be appreciated up close, while fitted protective cushioning helps safeguard the sculpture in transit so it arrives ready to display.
Jackie’s story after Sunny and Gizmo
Jackie was the first documented bald eagle chick hatched in Big Bear Valley, in summer 2012, according to CDFW. The agency reported that she died in the overnight hours of August 9, 2026, at the Ojai Raptor Center while receiving intensive medical care. CDFW said she was admitted on July 18 after being found grounded and documented severe anemia, low blood protein, dehydration, and kidney and lung abnormalities during her care. The agency’s account does not establish a single cause of death, so none should be inferred.
For official updates, follow CDFW’s statement on Jackie and FOBBV’s camera and nest updates. Give the eagles space and do not seek out or approach the nest.
