They are also called little blue penguins; in New Zealand, they are known as kororā. These nine facts explain what makes them distinctive, how they live, and why their colonies need space and protection.
1. They are the world’s smallest penguins
Little penguins are small enough to fit the name: NSW Environment and Heritage describes adults as typically 30–35 centimetres tall and about one kilogram, while the Australian Museum says they can reach up to 40 centimetres. The figures are approximate and come from different source descriptions, rather than a single precise size for every bird.
2. Their backs are blue and their bellies are white
A little penguin’s slate-blue or blue-grey upperparts contrast with its white underparts. That combination gives the compact seabird its other familiar name, little blue penguin.
3. Their wings are made for swimming, not flying
Little penguins cannot fly. Their wings work as flippers, propelling them through the water and helping them dive in search of prey.

4. Much of their life is spent at sea
Phillip Island Nature Parks says the little penguins in its care spend approximately 80% of their lives in the ocean. They come ashore for activities including maintaining burrows, breeding, raising chicks and moulting. That percentage describes the Nature Parks’ account of its local penguins, not a universal measure for every colony.
5. They eat a varied seafood diet
Little penguins feed on small marine animals, including fish, squid, krill and small crustaceans. At Phillip Island, Nature Parks lists anchovies, pilchards, red cod, warehou, young barracouta, squid and sea jellies among local prey. What is available—and therefore what penguins eat—depends on location and conditions.

6. At Phillip Island, they gather offshore before coming ashore at dusk
Phillip Island Nature Parks describes penguins assembling in groups called rafts offshore and waiting until dusk to cross the beach. The timing helps them hide from predators. This is a description of that colony’s behavior; the evidence does not establish that every little-penguin group follows the same routine.
7. They nest in burrows and usually lay two eggs
Little penguin nests can be in burrows or other sheltered sites. Females typically lay two eggs, and both parents take part in incubation and chick care. Breeding dates vary by location, so there is no single month range that applies to every colony.

8. Both parents share the work, but chick survival varies
The Australian Museum reports that both parents take incubation shifts and that usually one chick survives to moult. That is a typical pattern in the museum’s account, not a guaranteed outcome for every nest or breeding season.

Little penguins face documented concerns including habitat loss, introduced predators, pollution and disturbance. NSW Environment and Heritage advises people to keep their distance where penguins are present because breeding habitat can be disturbed. At Phillip Island, Nature Parks describes habitat restoration and predator control as part of its conservation work.

A population figure needs a date attached: the Australian Government’s 2022 Wildlife Conservation Plan for Seabirds gives an estimate of 469,760 breeding adults. It is a dated plan estimate, not a current census or a statement of population trend. Global status also does not describe every local colony: the Australian Museum lists the species as least concern globally, while some populations in New South Wales are endangered.
