A vinegar spray is sometimes suggested as a rabbit deterrent, but there is no established evidence in the guidance reviewed that it reliably protects a garden. A University of Georgia county Master Gardener newsletter gives a vinegar, water, and hot-sauce recipe—and warns that it needs frequent reapplication. For longer-term protection, university guidance favors fencing or other physical barriers.
What the vinegar recipe says—and what it does not prove
The University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Cherokee County Master Gardener newsletter suggests mixing 1 cup vinegar, 1 cup water, and 2 tablespoons hot sauce, then spraying the mixture around the yard perimeter. The newsletter says the scent wears off and rain washes it away, so it must be reapplied frequently. Read the newsletter.
This is a reported homemade remedy, not proof that vinegar reliably repels rabbits: the newsletter does not cite a controlled test. The UC IPM and Iowa State rabbit-management guidance reviewed do not recommend vinegar as an established control. Nor does the recipe establish that spraying vinegar on plants is safe or effective.
How to tell whether rabbits may be feeding
Cleanly snipped low stems and diagonal cuts can be signs of rabbit feeding. Look for other evidence too; damage alone does not establish which animal caused it. Removing brush, junk, and tall weeds near vulnerable plants can reduce cover, though habitat changes alone may not stop feeding.

#1 Best Overall
- SPECIFICALLY TARGETS RABBITS: This repellent was formulated for one specific purpose to protect plants from rabbit damage. It contains concentrated botanical oils from plants they naturally avoid eating creating a spray that tastes and smells terrible to rabbits
- PROTECT YOUR LAWN & GARDEN: Safe to spray directly on grass and any plants that are being damaged by rabbits. Contains triple the number of active ingredients than any other repellent for stronger protection
- PLEASANT MINT SCENT: Every ingredient in this repellent plays an important role in protecting your plants - especially the botanical mint oils that smell nice to people, but are highly irritating to rabbits
- FORMULATED TO LAST LONGER: Contains strong natural sticking agents that make the repellent adhere to the leaves of your plant. Provides long-lasting protection does not need to be re-applied after average rainfall
- SAFE FOR PETS & POLLINATORS: Made from natural ingredients and botanical oils that are safe for pets, people, and the environment. Contains NO harmful chemicals or glues that threaten nearby wildlife
Why physical barriers are a more dependable choice
UC IPM describes fencing as probably the most effective long-term way to protect plantings. Iowa State Extension also recommends fencing as the most effective method for home gardens. Their suggested dimensions differ, so treat each as guidance for its own context rather than a universal specification. Choose based on local rabbit pressure, digging conditions, garden layout, and local advice.
| Source and context | Mesh and height | Bottom edge |
|---|---|---|
| UC IPM, California guidance | Wire mesh no larger than 1 inch; 48 inches tall | Bury at least 6 to 10 inches; bending the bottom outward adds a digging deterrent |
| Iowa State Extension, home gardens | Chicken wire with mesh 1 inch or smaller, or 1/4-inch hardware cloth; 2 feet should be adequate | Pin tightly to the ground or bury 1 to 2 inches |
For a single young tree or shrub, an individual wire cage or tree guard may be more practical than enclosing the whole garden. A garden fence takes more installation effort, but unlike a scent-based spray, it does not need reapplication after rain or new growth.

- REPELS DEER AND RABBITS: Deer and rabbits don’t have to eat vegetation for the repellent to be effective—they have a natural aversion to the scent
- SPRAY ON PLANTS: Use to treat landscaped ornamental gardens, flowers, shrubs, trees and vines
- RAIN RESISTANT: Ready-to-use liquid formula starts to work immediately
- HARMLESS TO PLANTS AND ANIMALS: Won’t harm plants and animals when used and stored as directed
- APPLY YEAR-ROUND: For best results, shake well before each use
When a commercial repellent may help
Some repellents can reduce damage, particularly to woody ornamentals, but results vary and rabbits may become accustomed to odors or tastes. Oregon State University Extension’s wildlife specialist describes repellents as potentially short-term protection that is usually not effective over the long term. Apply before damage only where the product label permits, and expect to reapply after rain, irrigation, heavy dew, or new growth.
UC IPM cautions that repellents usually fail in vegetable gardens with highly preferred foods, and most are not suitable for parts of plants people eat. Formulations and registrations vary, so follow the specific product label and local rules; do not assume a product approved for ornamentals can be used on edible crops. No controlled vinegar-versus-fence comparison or reliable numeric success rate is established in the cited guidance.
