Atacama Trench’s “Terrifying” New Resident: How a 4-Centimeter Amphipod Lives at 25,900 Feet

A new amphipod genus and species, Dulcibella camanchaca, hunts smaller crustaceans nearly 7,902 meters down in the Atacama Trench. Here is what its discovery shows—and what remains unknown.

Dulcibella camanchaca is not a giant monster. It is a shrimp-like amphipod crustacean about four centimeters long, collected at 7,902 meters (roughly 25,900 feet) in the Atacama (Peru–Chile) Trench. Researchers identified it as both a new species and a new genus. Its unusual distinction is behavioral: it is a fast-swimming predator that seizes smaller amphipods in one of the darkest, highest-pressure habitats on Earth.

What was found at 25,900 feet?

Four specimens of Dulcibella camanchaca were collected during the 2023 Integrated Deep-Ocean Observing System (IDOOS) Expedition aboard the research vessel Abate Molina. An untethered lander carrying scientific instruments and baited traps brought the animals to the surface. The specimens were frozen and analyzed at the Universidad de Concepción.

The resulting study, by Johanna N. J. Weston and colleagues, described the animals as a new species and a new genus using both genetic and morphological evidence. The work appeared in Systematics and Biodiversity in 2024 (DOI: 10.1080/14772000.2024.2416430).

Fact What is established
Scientific name Dulcibella camanchaca
Animal group Amphipod crustacean (family Eusiridae)
Collection depth 7,902 meters, approximately 25,925 feet
Specimens collected Four
Reported length Nearly 4 centimeters
Trench depth More than 8,000 meters

What kind of animal is it?

An amphipod is a small crustacean related to other shrimp-like animals. Dulcibella is not a fish and is not a true crab. Its crab-like appearance in photographs is only a visual shorthand. At nearly four centimeters, it is large compared with many amphipods, but it is small by ordinary animal standards.

The species name references “darkness” in languages of peoples from the Andes region, reflecting the deep, lightless ocean where it lives. The published account does not establish a particular Indigenous language for the name.

How does it survive at 25,900 feet?

The evidence shows what the animal does in the trench, but not a species-specific biochemical explanation for pressure tolerance. Researchers observed an active, fast-swimming predator with specialized raptorial appendages—grasping limbs used to capture smaller amphipods. That lifestyle distinguishes it from animals that mainly scavenge passively on material sinking from above.

A high-pressure, lightless habitat

The collection site lies in the hadal zone, the deepest oceanic region. At 7,902 meters, the water is permanently dark and under immense pressure. The Atacama Trench itself extends beyond 8,000 meters. The available species report does not identify a unique pressure-protection molecule, membrane adaptation or other physiological mechanism for D. camanchaca; claims about how it withstands pressure must therefore remain general rather than borrowed from unrelated deep-sea animals.

An active hunter in the deep

Its raptorial appendages and rapid swimming indicate a predator that pursues prey rather than relying only on carrion. The documented prey are smaller amphipods. “Dulcibella camanchaca is a fast-swimming predator that we named after ‘darkness’ in the languages of the peoples from the Andes region to signify the deep, dark ocean from where it predates,” said Dr. Johanna Weston, a WHOI hadal ecologist and study co-lead author.

Why the Atacama Trench matters

The Peru–Chile Trench runs along the eastern South Pacific off northern Chile. Its surface waters are productive and nutrient-rich, while the trench is geographically remote from many other hadal environments. The study team describes that combination as supporting a distinctive community of native species. This is an interpretation of the Atacama system, not evidence that every deep trench has the same ecology.

Finding a predator at this depth expands the known range of body forms and feeding strategies in the trench. It also shows why baited landers remain important: cameras and surface sampling cannot routinely reveal animals living several miles below the ocean.

How this discovery compares with other trench animals

Comparison Dulcibella camanchaca What the evidence does not show
Taxonomy New genus and species of amphipod It is not a snailfish or a true crab
Body size Nearly 4 centimeters Not established as the largest amphipod overall
Feeding behavior Fast-swimming predator of smaller amphipods Not shown to be the top predator of the trench
Depth Collected at 7,902 meters Not established as the deepest animal ever found

What remains unknown?

  • The four collected animals do not provide an abundance estimate or population trend.
  • No conservation status has been assigned in the reported material.
  • The study does not establish how pollution, warming or other environmental changes might affect the species.
  • Its detailed pressure-tolerance physiology remains to be determined.
  • Additional sampling is needed to map its range, prey, reproduction and life span.

Dr. Carolina González, the study’s co-lead author responsible for sample collection and DNA analysis, said: “This study’s collaborative effort and integrative approach confirmed Dulcibella camanchaca as a new species and highlights ongoing biodiversity discoveries in the Atacama Trench.” She added, “More discoveries are expected as we continue to study the Atacama Trench.”
