Your cat scratches the sofa because scratching is normal feline behavior, not revenge or deliberate destruction. The lasting fix is to give your cat a stable scratcher that matches the sofa’s surface and orientation, place it beside the target, reward its use, and protect the upholstery while the new habit takes hold.
Why cats scratch sofas
Scratching serves several needs: it leaves visible marks and scent from glands in the paws, helps remove the translucent outer claw sheaths, and gives cats a chance to stretch. It can also help them mark an area and feel secure. Cornell’s Feline Health Center explains that cats scratching household furniture are meeting these needs, not setting out to destroy it.
A sofa can be especially appealing because it is sturdy, often tall enough for a full stretch, and offers a texture the cat can grip. Some cats may also learn that scratching furniture gets a person’s attention, as Cats Protection notes.
How to choose the right replacement scratcher
Choose based on what your cat already does rather than buying by appearance alone. For several days, observe which part of the sofa gets scratched, whether the cat scratches upward or across a surface, and which materials it returns to. Note when it happens too—such as after waking, playing, meals, visitors, or tension with another animal.

| What you observe | What to try |
|---|---|
| Scratching vertically on a sofa arm or back | A tall sisal post that permits a full stretch |
| Scratching horizontally on a cushion or nearby rug | A low cardboard or other horizontal scratcher |
| Repeated interest in a particular material | Offer a scratcher with a similar texture, such as sisal, cardboard, or carpet |
| Scratching in more than one place | Provide more than one scratcher, near the separate targets |
Whatever the style, choose a scratcher that is large enough for a full-body stretch and heavy or securely anchored so it will not wobble or topple. Put it immediately beside the sofa area your cat targets. Location is part of the solution: a perfect post across the room may lose out to the convenient sofa.
How to redirect scratching, step by step
- Put the matching scratcher beside the target. Start with the orientation and surface suggested by your observations. If the cat scratches several areas, place an appropriate option near each one.
- Reward interest as soon as it happens. When your cat touches or scratches the post, immediately offer a treat, praise, play, or petting—whichever your cat values. Catnip near the post may attract some cats, but it is not essential.
- Protect the sofa during the transition. Use a removable cover, a suitable upholstery protector, or double-sided sticky tape made for furniture. Keep the scratcher easy to reach while the sofa protection is in place. Test coverings or adhesive on an inconspicuous spot first and follow the product label.
- Keep a scratcher that is being used. Wear on the surface is evidence the post is serving its purpose. Once your cat uses it reliably, move it gradually if it needs to be elsewhere; moving it too soon may make it less appealing.
The ASPCA recommends teaching a cat where and what to scratch rather than trying to stop scratching altogether; see its scratching guidance.

What not to do
- Do not yell at or physically punish your cat. Punishment can create fear and may only interrupt scratching when you are present, without teaching a better place to scratch.
- Do not take your cat’s paws and rub them on the post. Forcing contact can make the scratcher unpleasant and lead to avoidance.
- Do not expect one surface or location to suit every cat. If the first option is ignored, adjust its orientation, texture, stability, or placement based on what your cat scratches.
When to seek professional help
Arrange a veterinary examination if scratching increases suddenly, spreads alongside other behavior changes, or appears connected to anxiety. A veterinarian can assess possible health or stress-related factors. For persistent problems, a certified applied animal behaviorist or board-certified veterinary behaviorist can help tailor a behavior plan.
