Some Southern Right Whales May Live Nearly Twice as Long as Previously Thought

A new survival analysis suggests some southern right whales may live to 150 years. Bowheads may exceed 200, while North Atlantic right whales face much shorter lives under current threats.

Some southern right whales may live to 150 years, nearly twice the 70–80 years once commonly assumed. A 2024 analysis estimates that 10% survive beyond 130 years. That is a modeled upper tail, not a typical lifespan: the estimated median is 73.4 years.

How long do whales really live?

There is no single lifespan for all whales. Estimates differ by species, by whether researchers are describing a typical lifespan or a possible maximum, and by how they can determine age. Southern right whales are the species behind the recent “twice as long” finding; bowhead whales are the stronger record-holder for exceptional longevity.

Species What the evidence says How to interpret it
Southern right whale Median estimated lifespan of 73.4 years; 10% are estimated to survive beyond 131.8 years, with the best-fit model extending beyond 150 years. 2024 study A population-level estimate of survival, with substantial uncertainty in the oldest ages—not a claim that 150 years is typical.
Bowhead whale Evidence supports lifespans exceeding 200 years, according to NOAA Fisheries and a 2025 Nature study. The best-supported example of an exceptionally long-lived marine mammal; the exact maximum is difficult to establish.
North Atlantic right whale Current average lifespan is about 22 years, and few live beyond 50, according to the 2024 analysis. This reflects intense human-caused mortality and should not be mistaken for the species’ natural longevity.

What changed in the estimate for southern right whales?

For years, southern right whales were commonly described as living about 70–80 years. The 2024 work does not overturn that range as a description of a typical life: its modeled median is 73.4 years. What changes is the estimated far end of the distribution. The model estimates that 10% live past 131.8 years and that some could reach 150 or more.

That distinction matters. “Can live to 150” describes an exceptional possibility inferred from a survival model, not a guaranteed lifespan or a known age for a particular whale.

How can scientists estimate a whale’s lifespan without tracking it until death?

Photographs identify individuals over time

Researchers analyzed more than four decades of mark-recapture and photo-identification records. Distinctive features allow individual female southern right whales to be recognized in photographs taken years apart.

Survivorship models estimate the unseen years

When an identified whale is no longer recorded, that absence does not by itself prove the animal has died: it may simply have gone unobserved. Statistical survivorship curves use repeated sightings and disappearances across many individuals to estimate the probability of survival at different ages. This yields a population lifespan distribution; it does not give every whale a precise birthday or death date.

Why can bowhead whales live more than 200 years?

Bowheads are Arctic baleen whales, and multiple kinds of evidence point to extraordinary longevity. NOAA says evidence suggests they can live for more than 200 years and describes them as the longest-lived marine mammals. The International Whaling Commission gives a more cautious range, reaching 150 and perhaps 200 years (IWC bowhead whale overview). These sources support exceptional age, though not a precise, universally established maximum.

A 2025 Nature study examines a possible biological explanation: enhanced DNA repair may help bowheads maintain their cells despite their large bodies and long lives, while facing relatively low cancer risk. The researchers also investigate cold-induced RNA-binding protein as a possible part of the process. These are mechanisms under study, not a proven recipe for extending human life. Alaskan Iñupiat Inuit communities have described bowheads as animals that “live two human lifetimes,” a cultural expression also recorded in the study.

Why do North Atlantic right whales die so young?

The roughly 22-year average lifespan reported for North Atlantic right whales is shaped by preventable human-caused deaths, especially entanglement in fishing gear and strikes by vessels. Few currently live beyond 50. Those numbers describe the population under present pressures, not how long a right whale might survive in the absence of those hazards.

The contrast has conservation consequences: a long-lived whale killed before old age loses decades in which it could otherwise contribute to reproduction. Because whale populations recover slowly, deaths of adults can remove substantial future breeding potential.

What does menopause have to do with whale longevity?

Five whale species are known to undergo menopause. A comparative study covered in a University of York research release found that females in these species live around 40 years longer than females of similar size in species without menopause.

The authors interpret those extra post-reproductive years as time when older females can help their children and grandchildren. Ending reproduction before their daughters’ reproductive years overlap extensively may also reduce competition within families. The comparison is consistent with a family-support explanation for menopause; it does not show that every older female provides care in the same way.

Why were whale lifespans easy to underestimate?

Whaling removed many older baleen whales from populations, while incomplete long-term observations make naturally rare old ages difficult to document. A population can therefore appear to have a lower maximum lifespan than its biology would permit. Long photo-identification records and survival modeling help reveal the long tail that occasional sightings or short studies can miss.

Longevity estimates also answer different questions: photographic survivorship estimates how survival varies across a population, while bowhead evidence supports an unusually high maximum. Neither should be confused with the present-day average for a population exposed to heavy human-caused mortality.

What threatens bowheads despite their longevity?

Bowheads remain protected and are listed as endangered in the United States. Documented threats include climate change, contaminants, entanglement, vessel strikes, and ocean noise. Their potential to live for centuries does not make them immune to pressures that can kill them much sooner.
