Samoyeds are friendly, people-oriented working dogs with a weather-resistant double coat, substantial grooming needs and a strong need for daily activity and companionship. They can make affectionate family dogs, but they are a poor fit for households that cannot manage shedding, consistent training, secure exercise and time together.

Where Samoyeds come from—and what their looks tell you
The breed originated with the Samoyede peoples of Northern Siberia. Samoyeds worked as sled-pulling and herding dogs and lived closely alongside people. Their history helps explain why they tend to seek human company and need purposeful activity rather than being left alone in a yard.
Their dense double coat is designed to resist harsh weather: a thick, short undercoat sits beneath longer, coarser guard hairs. The Samoyed Club of America’s breed standard accepts white, cream, biscuit, and combinations of these colors; blue eyes are disqualified by the standard. The breed’s familiar “Samoyed smile” comes from upturned mouth corners. The AKC notes that this facial shape helps limit drooling and ice forming around the mouth in cold conditions.
Are Samoyeds good family dogs?
They can be affectionate, friendly companions for families, including families with children. A good fit depends less on the label “family dog” than on whether the household can meet the dog’s social, exercise, training and grooming needs. Supervise interactions with children and other pets, and teach children to handle the dog respectfully; individual temperament varies.
#1 Best Overall
- ROUNDED PIN : The long tooth undercoat rake brush has smooth rounded pins that make it easier for pets to accept grooming. The 0.94 foot long steel teeth of the rake penetrate deep into the dog's hair to remove loose fur and remove all mats, tangles and knots. Long tooth undercoat dog rake brush Not suitable for cats, puppies or short-haired pets.
- NON-SLIP HANDLE : This large dog grooming comb has an ergonomic non-slip handle, and a rubber non-slip pad allows you to optimally control the pet's brushing tool, so you can brush your pet's long or short hair easily.
- REDUCE FLOATING HAIR : Got to brush regularly for 5 minutes to easily remove dead hair so it doesn't fly off. Your pet can reduce shedding by up to 90%. Your sofas, carpets and sweaters will be hair-free!
- EASY TO USE : Placing the large brush on the skin is important because the massaging action helps to relax and remove dandruff. First, gently trim the back and tail, taking care not to hurt the eyes or ears. Make the brush go down the dog's neck. If your dog has long hair (feathers) on the back of the legs, brush it through as it tends to get tangled. Finally, brush lightly over the soft belly to remove any remaining emanations.
- STRONG & STURDY : This pet shedding grooming brush is made of durable and rust-resistant stainless steel, so getting it wet won't break it.
Samoyeds often bond closely with their people and do best when included in everyday life. The AKC cautions that a dog left in solitary confinement can become miserable and destructive. If everyone is away for long stretches most days, this breed is likely a weak match unless the household can reliably arrange companionship and activity.
Temperament and training
AKC describes Samoyeds as friendly, gentle, adaptable, intelligent, social and mischievous. Intelligence does not mean they will automatically follow directions: they need clear expectations, repetition and patient consistency. Start socialization and training early, including puppy classes where appropriate, and use a firm but gentle approach.

- Extra-Wide "Hook & Grab" Array: The massive 5.1-inch head features an expansive array of 120° bent pins designed for "High-Volume Extraction." It penetrates the densest double coats to hook and pull out mountains of trapped undercoat in a single pass.
- Responsive Bounce for Heavy Coats: Even when tackling the thickest fur on a Husky or Samoyed, our air-cushioned pad provides vital "give." It eliminates the harsh, rigid scraping common with large brushes, protecting your dog from irritation while you work through the heavy stuff.
- Blowout Season Time-Saver: Cut your grooming time by over 30%. The combination of extra-wide coverage and high-density hooking pins means you get more hair off the dog and into the brush faster—ideal for the heavy shedding seasons of large and giant breeds.
- Professional-Grade Beechwood Handle: Built for heavy-duty use, the reinforced beechwood handle provides the torque needed for thick coats without snapping. Its ergonomic, vibration-dampening design ensures professional groomers and large-dog owners can maintain total control without hand cramps.
- The Giant Breed Solution: Specifically designed for Goldens, Malamutes, Bernese Mountain Dogs, and Great Pyrenees. This "beast" of a brush makes managing a large dog’s coat a manageable task rather than an exhausting workout, leaving them fluffy, soft, and shed-free.
Set routines for everyday skills such as walking on leash, settling calmly, greeting people and being handled for grooming. Practice frequently rather than assuming a lesson is learned after one session. Boredom and too little interaction can contribute to unwanted behavior.
How much exercise does a Samoyed need?
Plan for daily walks, play and activities that engage the dog’s mind as well as its body. Samoyeds were bred for demanding work; when their activity needs go unmet, they can become difficult to live with. There is no single exercise-minute target that suits every Samoyed: age, health, conditioning, climate and the dog’s individual needs all matter.

Brushing and coat care
AKC recommends daily brushing. A slicker brush or metal comb can help remove loose hair and work through mats. During heavier shedding, coat care can take more time; some owners may choose professional grooming, but no standard grooming cost is established here.
Nails and teeth
Trim nails every three to four weeks or as needed. Brush teeth often using toothpaste made for dogs. Introduce handling gradually and keep sessions calm so routine care is easier to maintain.

Health and questions to ask a breeder
AKC describes Samoyeds as generally healthy when responsibly bred. Before choosing a puppy, ask the breeder about the health evaluations recommended by the national breed club and request documentation rather than relying on a verbal assurance.
- Hip evaluation
- Cardiac examination
- Eye examination by a veterinary ophthalmologist
- DNA testing for RD/OSD (OSD2)
- DNA testing for X-linked progressive retinal atrophy (XLPRA1)
Ask how the results relate to the puppy’s parents and family history, and discuss any concerns with your veterinarian. A specific breed-wide prevalence percentage for these conditions is not established in the cited guidance, so screening results should not be treated as a prediction that an individual dog will or will not develop a condition. Routine veterinary examinations, parasite control, dental care, appropriate nutrition and weight monitoring remain part of care.
Is a Samoyed right for your household?
First-time owners can succeed if they are prepared for the breed’s daily care and social commitment. Before deciding, consider whether your household can consistently provide:
- Time and patience for daily brushing and tolerance for heavy shedding.
- Daily exercise, play and mental stimulation suited to the dog’s age and health.
- Companionship and interaction rather than long periods of isolation.
- Consistent, gentle training and early socialization.
- Secure fencing and leash management, because Samoyeds may roam.
- Supervision and thoughtful introductions around children and other pets.
- A breeder who provides documented health testing.
If several of these needs would be difficult to meet, consider a breed whose care and activity requirements better match your routine.
