A Chug is a Chihuahua–Pug mix, also called a Pughuahua or Pugwawa. It is not an American Kennel Club (AKC)-recognized standardized breed, so adult size, coat, facial shape and temperament can vary substantially—even among puppies from the same litter.

Most Chugs are small companion dogs that need moderate daily activity, careful weight control and close attention to teeth, eyes, knees and breathing. A well-socialized individual can suit apartment living, but the cross itself does not guarantee a particular personality or level of health.

What is a Chug?

PetMD defines the Chug as a Chihuahua mixed with a Pug. Because it is a cross rather than a standardized purebred, there is no single official appearance or conformation requirement. A Chug may inherit a relatively short muzzle and facial folds from the Pug, a narrower face from the Chihuahua, or an intermediate look. Coat length, color and shedding also differ by parentage.

The parents can contribute contrasting behavioral tendencies. AKC describes the Chihuahua as highly alert and intelligent, while Pugs are generally playful, affectionate and outgoing. A Chug may therefore be watchful and vocal or especially cuddly and social. Early socialization, reward-based training, genetics and the dog’s individual experiences are more predictive than the mix label alone.

How big does a Chug get?

PetMD reports that a full-grown Chug generally weighs about 18 pounds or less. Parent-breed figures provide context, not a guarantee for a mixed-breed dog:

Dog Published adult weight Published lifespan
Chug About 18 lb or less (PetMD, 2024) About 13–16 years (PetMD, 2024)
Pug 14–18 lb (AKC profile) 13–15 years (AKC profile)
Chihuahua No more than 6 lb (AKC profile) 14–16 years (AKC profile)

Weight is only one part of healthy size. Ask a veterinarian to assess body condition rather than targeting a number copied from a breed page; a compact Chug can be overweight even when it weighs less than 18 pounds.

Chug temperament and behavior

Companion-focused, but not uniform

Many Chugs seek human company and enjoy indoor play. Some inherit the Chihuahua’s confidence and territorial alertness, which can mean barking at visitors, sounds or activity outside the home. Others are more relaxed and sociable in the Pug tradition. Meet the individual dog and observe its behavior with people and other animals before adoption or purchase.

Training and socialization

Use short, reward-based sessions and begin handling, household sounds and calm introductions to friendly dogs early. Avoid punishment, which can increase fear or defensive barking. Provide a predictable routine and food puzzles or other supervised enrichment when the dog is home alone; boredom and isolation can worsen nuisance vocalization.

Children and larger pets

Chugs are small enough to be injured by a fall, rough handling or an accidental step. Children should sit or kneel for interactions, allow the dog to move away, and be supervised by an adult. Introductions to much larger dogs should be controlled because size disparity can cause accidental injury even when play is friendly.

Exercise, heat and breathing

Most Chugs can meet their needs with short walks plus indoor games and training. Build fitness gradually and watch the dog’s recovery rather than forcing a distance or pace.

A Pug-like short muzzle can narrow the nostrils and upper airways. Heat, humidity and strenuous exertion increase risk for dogs with brachycephalic anatomy. Exercise during cooler periods, provide water and shade, and stop before heavy distress. Breathing difficulty, collapse or unusually prolonged recovery warrants urgent veterinary advice; these signs cannot be diagnosed from appearance alone.

Feeding and weight management

Chugs can gain weight quickly because Pugs are often food-motivated and the cross has a small frame. Measure each meal, count treats and monitor body condition at home. Have a veterinarian calculate an appropriate calorie plan for the dog’s age, neuter status, activity and medical needs rather than relying on a generic cup recommendation.

Grooming and dental care

Brush regularly to remove loose hair and check the skin. If the dog has facial folds, inspect and gently clean them as directed by a veterinarian, then keep them dry. Trim nails before they become long enough to alter gait.

Small dogs are prone to dental crowding and periodontal disease. The AKC Chihuahua care guidance states that good dental care is necessary and should include brushing the dog’s teeth. Introduce a small-dog toothbrush and veterinary-approved toothpaste gradually; ask your veterinary team about technique, professional examinations and dental cleaning when indicated.

Common health concerns

These are possible predispositions, not diagnoses for every Chug. A veterinary examination should be tailored to the dog’s anatomy, age and family history.

  • Brachycephalic airway disease: narrowed nostrils or airways can impair cooling and exercise tolerance.
  • Eye disease: corneal ulcers, glaucoma, cataracts and dry eye are concerns, particularly when eyes are prominent or exposed.
  • Dental and periodontal disease: crowded small-dog mouths require consistent home care and veterinary monitoring.
  • Weight-related disease: excess body fat increases strain on joints and breathing.
  • Patellar and other orthopedic problems: inherited knee abnormalities can occur in small dogs.
  • Chihuahua-associated risks: veterinary sources note possible heart, eye and epilepsy risks in Chihuahua lines.

Ask the breeder or rescue organization for available parent health records, and ask your veterinarian which eye, cardiac, patellar or airway assessments are appropriate. Crossing two breeds does not eliminate inherited disease.

How long do Chugs live?

Published Chug guidance from PetMD gives an average lifespan of about 13–16 years. AKC profiles list 13–15 years for Pugs and 14–16 years for Chihuahuas. These are population-level expectations, not a promise for an individual dog; genetics, body condition, preventive care and disease all influence longevity.

Is a Chug right for your household?

  • Often a good match: households wanting a small companion, able to provide daily short activity, training, dental care and close weight monitoring.
  • Use extra caution: homes in very hot climates, families seeking a quiet dog, or households with toddlers or much larger pets unless supervision can be constant.
  • Before committing: meet the specific dog, review health history, listen to its breathing at rest and after gentle activity, and discuss expected adult size and care with a veterinarian.
