The Great Dane is a giant, typically friendly companion, but its size, strength, care costs and relatively short expected lifespan make it a serious commitment. Before bringing one home, consider whether you can manage a dog that may reach 32 inches at the shoulder and weigh 110–175 pounds, provide early training and daily age-appropriate activity, and arrange regular veterinary care.

What is a Great Dane like?

The Great Dane is an elegant, powerful member of the American Kennel Club’s Working Group. It has a short, smooth coat that comes in multiple colors and patterns, including harlequin. The AKC describes the breed as friendly, patient and dependable, and as alert at home. These are general breed tendencies, not guarantees about an individual dog’s temperament. The breed standard calls for a dog that is “spirited, courageous, always friendly, dependable and never timid or aggressive,” but a standard is not a prediction of how every Dane will behave. Is a Great Dane a good fit for your lifestyle?

Think beyond floor space: a giant dog needs room to rest, safe handling, suitable transport and a budget that reflects its size. The Great Dane Club of America (GDCA) notes that Danes take up more room at home, need an appropriately sized vehicle for safe travel, and cost considerably more to maintain than a small breed. Food and veterinary care are among the practical expenses to consider. GDCA: Is a Great Dane for you?

  • May suit you if: you can accommodate a giant dog, manage its strength, make time for training and activity, and plan for long-term care.
  • Think carefully if: your home or vehicle cannot comfortably accommodate a large dog, or you are not prepared for the handling demands and higher upkeep.

Consider stairs, access to suitable transport, and where the dog will sleep and relax. A Dane’s size affects ordinary routines as well as travel.

How big do Great Danes get?

The AKC says Great Danes can stand as tall as 32 inches at the shoulder and gives a typical weight range of 110–175 pounds. Individual dogs vary, and those figures should be treated as breed guidance rather than a promise about a particular dog. AKC breed profile

How long do Great Danes live, and what health issues matter?

The AKC gives a typical lifespan of 8–10 years, while noting that some dogs live less and a few longer. This is a breed-level estimate, not a forecast for an individual dog. AKC: Great Dane life span and health issues

Breed health resources identify several concerns worth discussing with a veterinarian. These are risks associated with the breed, not diagnoses for every Great Dane.

  • Gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV), or bloat: a serious emergency concern. Its causes are not fully understood. AKC describes common veterinary advice to offer multiple smaller meals and avoid vigorous exercise around mealtimes, but neither practice guarantees prevention. Ask your veterinarian about signs that require urgent care, feeding routines and whether prophylactic gastropexy is appropriate for your dog.
  • Heart disease: AKC discusses cardiomyopathy, and the GDCA health resource also addresses heart disease.
  • Joint and bone conditions: concerns include hip dysplasia and osteoarthritis; the breed club also discusses osteosarcoma, a bone cancer.
  • Other conditions: AKC discusses thyroid disease, while GDCA’s health resource includes cancer concerns such as lymphoma.

When assessing a puppy’s background, ask the breeder for health-test documentation and family health history. AKC and GDCA materials point to hip, cardiac, eye and thyroid evaluations for breeding stock. Review any records with your veterinarian; screening information is not a guarantee of future health. The GDCA says its health information is not a substitute for care from a qualified veterinarian. GDCA health and research

What exercise and training does a Great Dane need?

Exercise for age and development

AKC recommends daily exercise suited to the individual dog’s age and health; two or three brisk walks may be enough for some Danes. It advises waiting until age two before jogging or hiking with a Dane to protect growing joints. Keep the dog leashed outside secure areas, and follow veterinary guidance when adapting activity to a health condition. Avoid vigorous exercise around mealtimes in light of GDV concerns; this is a commonly advised precaution, not a proven way to prevent bloat. AKC breed profile and AKC lifestyle guide

Training and socialization

Start socialization and training early, including puppy classes where appropriate. An adult Dane is powerful, so reliable leash manners and basic obedience make daily handling safer. AKC recommends firm, consistent methods and says Danes need human contact and opportunities to socialize with people and other animals.

How should you groom and feed a Great Dane?

Coat and nails

The short coat is relatively straightforward to maintain, though shedding can be conspicuous on a very large dog. AKC recommends weekly brushing for much of the year with a medium-bristle brush, rubber grooming mitt or hound glove, increasing to daily brushing during heavier shedding seasons. Baths are occasional; trim nails regularly. AKC breed profile

Food and growth

Choose a high-quality diet appropriate to life stage, and ask your veterinarian to help select food and a feeding routine for your dog. Puppy nutrition deserves particular care: AKC emphasizes avoiding excessively rapid growth because of associated musculoskeletal concerns. Feeding multiple smaller meals is commonly recommended in discussions of GDV risk, but does not guarantee prevention.
