15 Ways to Enrich Your Cat’s Life

Enrichment is more than toys. Offer your cat choices for resting, climbing, scratching, play, foraging, and social interaction, using household items where they work.

Enriching a cat’s life means making room for natural behaviors—resting safely, climbing, scratching, hunting through play, exploring food, and choosing when to socialize. It does not require a house full of new products. Start with what your cat enjoys, make shared resources easy to reach, and add options gradually.

What does an indoor cat need for a richer life?

Enrichment includes both the home environment and interactions with people and other pets. Indoor cats still benefit from opportunities to move, explore, forage, play, retreat, and rest. The Feline Veterinary Medical Association (FelineVMA) notes that meeting indoor cats’ needs can be challenging; an indoor-only life is not automatically enriching just because food and shelter are provided. FelineVMA’s indoor-cat guidance describes options for supporting those needs.

Use the ideas below as a menu, not a checklist every cat must complete. A cat’s age, health, mobility, confidence, and preferences matter. Watch what your cat chooses, and make sure an activity is safe and accessible before leaving it available unsupervised.

15 practical ways to enrich your cat’s life

1. Make a quiet hideaway

Offer a box, open carrier, or covered bed in a calm spot where your cat can retreat without being disturbed. The FelineVMA recommends safe places at least as numerous as the cats in the household, sized for one cat, and spread around the home. A hideaway can also serve as a resting place; it need not be a special purchase. FelineVMA’s practical guide explains the safe-place recommendation.

2. Add an elevated resting spot

A stable perch or cat tree gives a cat another place to rest and observe. Choose an option the cat can reach comfortably, taking age and mobility into account. A secure, cleared shelf or existing furniture may work if it is safe for the cat to access.

3. Offer a scratching surface that suits your cat

Scratching is normal feline behavior, but cats differ in the surfaces and orientations they prefer. Offer a stable scratcher and notice whether your cat gravitates toward a vertical or horizontal surface and a particular material. Preferences may change with age or health. The FelineVMA guidance on scratching behavior discusses these differences.

4. Play with a prey-like toy

Move a wand toy or similar interactive toy in ways that invite your cat to stalk and chase rather than simply waving it continuously overhead. Keep play at a pace and height your cat can manage, and put the toy away safely after the session.

5. Let your cat catch the toy sometimes

Allow your cat to catch the toy intermittently. FelineVMA guidance says cats need opportunities to capture the “prey” at least sometimes to prevent frustration. End a session with a catch rather than leaving the cat chasing an object it can never reach. FelineVMA’s guide covers prey-like play.

6. Rotate toys to refresh interest

Put some toys away and bring them back later instead of leaving every option out all the time. Rotation is a simple way to offer variety without buying more. Keep only toys that are intact and safe for your cat’s play style.

7. Put part of a meal in a food puzzle

A food puzzle or food ball can make a portion of a meal an opportunity to forage. Start with a level your cat can use and ensure the puzzle suits the cat’s abilities. If a puzzle causes frustration or your cat cannot get food from it, make it easier or choose another approach.

8. Hide or scatter food for safe foraging

Instead of serving every piece of food in one spot, hide or scatter some in accessible, safe locations. ASPCA’s feline-enrichment ideas include household-friendly ways to encourage exploration.

9. Create a comfortable window-viewing spot

Give your cat a secure place to look outside if it enjoys watching the view. Make sure the resting spot is stable and that windows are safely secured. If the view seems to unsettle your cat, try another location or activity instead.

10. Try a supervised DIY toy or feeder

Some enrichment can be made from ordinary household materials rather than bought. Supervise DIY toys and feeders, and remove them if your cat tries to chew off or swallow pieces. The ASPCA’s feline-enrichment guidance offers do-it-yourself ideas.

11. Build a cardboard tunnel, house, or maze

Arrange cardboard boxes into a simple tunnel, hideout, or maze, and supervise your cat’s access. Check for loose pieces and remove the setup if your cat begins eating or pulling off material. Let the cat explore at its own pace.

12. Teach a simple behavior with rewards

Short, reward-based training sessions can provide interaction and mental activity. Choose a reward your cat values, keep sessions brief, and let the cat disengage. The FelineVMA’s positive-reinforcement training guidance explains the reward-based approach.

13. Make social interaction calm and predictable

Offer attention in a way your cat welcomes: some cats enjoy play or contact, while others prefer company without handling. Let the cat approach or move away, and avoid forcing interaction. The FelineVMA guidance on feline handling supports adapting interactions to the individual cat.

14. Separate important resources around the home

Place food, water, toileting areas, scratching options, play opportunities, and resting places so cats can access them without having to compete or pass another cat that blocks the way. This matters especially in multi-cat households. Dispersed resources and resting places can give each cat more choice. FelineVMA’s indoor-cat guidance discusses resource access.

15. Consider controlled outdoor access when it suits the cat

For an individual cat that is comfortable with it, controlled access may include a secure enclosure, a cat-safe fence, or harness-and-leash walks. Outdoor access is not right for every cat; consider the cat’s temperament, health, and safety, and introduce any new setup gradually. FelineVMA’s indoor-cat guidance describes controlled outdoor options.

How to choose which ideas to try first

  • Follow your cat’s preferences: Notice whether the cat seeks height, hiding places, certain scratch surfaces, active play, food exploration, or quiet companionship.
  • Match the activity to the cat’s body and confidence: Adjust height, movement, and access for age, mobility, health, and comfort.
  • Start with low-cost options: A box, cleared viewing spot, or scattered meal may meet a need before you buy equipment.
  • Consider household access: In a multi-cat home, offer routes and resources that do not require one cat to pass another to reach them.
  • Supervise anything that can be chewed or swallowed: This is especially important with homemade toys and cardboard setups.
  • Change one thing at a time: Give your cat a chance to choose the new option, and remove it if it causes fear, frustration, or unsafe behavior.

When a change in behavior calls for veterinary advice

Enrichment can support a cat’s daily opportunities, but it is not a substitute for veterinary care and should not be treated as a cure for illness. If your cat develops a notable behavior change or seems to be in pain, contact a veterinarian. Environmental stress and health concerns can overlap, and a professional can help assess what is going on. See the FelineVMA environmental-needs guidance.
