The varieties were developed for different quarry: the Grande for deer and wild boar, and the Medio and Pequeno for rabbit work. They can be affectionate and playful at home, but their independence, chase instinct and need for secure exercise make them a better match for prepared, active households than for homes seeking a low-maintenance companion.
What is a Portuguese Podengo?
The Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) names the breed the Portuguese Warren Hound–Portuguese Podengo, places it among primitive-type hunting dogs, and identifies Portugal as its country of origin. The FCI records definitive acceptance on 18 November 1954 and publication of the official valid standard on 4 November 2008.

Registry terminology can be confusing. FCI and the United Kennel Club (UKC) describe one breed with three size varieties. In the United States, the American Kennel Club (AKC) lists the Grande and Medio as Portuguese Podengo, while the Pequeno appears as a separate breed listing. These labels describe different registry systems, not an entirely different traditional dog.

UKC standard ranges show how different the three varieties can be. They are standard measurements, not guarantees for an individual dog.

| Variety | Height | Weight | Traditional work |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grande | 22–28 inches | 44–66 pounds | Deer and wild boar hunting |
| Medio | 16–22 inches | 35–44 pounds | Chasing, flushing, hunting and retrieving rabbits |
| Pequeno | 8–12 inches | 9–13 pounds | Flushing rabbits from cover and vermin control |
The size you choose affects handling, transport, containment and the amount of physical space needed, but all three retain a working-dog background and can show a strong interest in movement and small animals.
Appearance and coat types
Portuguese Podengos have a wedge-shaped head, erect ears and a sickle-shaped tail. The Grande and Medio are nearly square in proportion; the Pequeno is somewhat longer than tall.
Smooth coat
The smooth coat is short and dense. It is shown naturally rather than sculpted.
Wire coat
The wire coat is medium in length, rough and harsh, and includes a beard. Coat choice changes texture and appearance, but it does not remove the breed’s exercise or prey-drive needs.

AKC describes Portuguese Podengos as lively, agile, playful, intelligent and independent. They may be affectionate with their families while reserved or suspicious around unfamiliar people. The breed’s hunting history also means that a small animal can trigger chase behavior; individual temperament varies with genetics, socialization and training.
The AKC profile says, “They are highly intelligent and learn new things very fast.” Fast learning does not necessarily mean easy compliance: an independent hound may understand a cue and still decide that another option is more rewarding.
Exercise, training and containment
Plan on daily physical activity plus opportunities to use the dog’s mind. The sources do not establish one universal number of exercise minutes, because needs vary by size, age, health and individual drive.
Safe exercise
For the chase-prone Pequeno, AKC recommends regular brisk exercise on leash or in a fenced area. A secure fence and a reliable dog leash are practical safeguards when wildlife, traffic or an open gate could turn a chase into an emergency. Off-leash freedom in unfenced public areas is a poor default for a dog with a strong pursuit instinct.

Training approach
Start socialization and basic training early, using food and play to build cooperation. Puppy classes can help a young Podengo learn calm handling, focus around distractions and appropriate greetings. Short, varied sessions generally suit an intelligent dog that may lose interest in repetitive drills.
Managing prey drive
- Use physical barriers and supervised access around rabbits, rodents, cats and other small pets.
- Teach recall, emergency attention and leave-it skills, while continuing to rely on secure containment in high-risk settings.
- Provide legal outlets such as scent games, searching, retrieving and active walks rather than expecting the dog to suppress its instincts all day.
Are Portuguese Podengos good family dogs?
They can be rewarding family companions when the household can provide activity, training, socialization and secure management. Their playful, affectionate side may suit an involved family, but a quiet home wanting a reliably placid dog may find the breed demanding. Children should be taught respectful handling, and interactions with small pets require particular caution because breed-level prey behavior is a real consideration.
Grooming and routine care
Routine grooming is usually straightforward. The Pequeno’s coat is shown naturally rather than trimmed or sculpted, and AKC says regular brushing is sufficient. Across the breed, include nail trimming, ear checks for wax or debris and tooth brushing in the care routine. The appropriate frequency depends on the individual dog’s nails, ears, coat and dental needs, so inspect regularly rather than following an unsupported fixed schedule.
Health and choosing a breeder
AKC says responsible breeders screen breeding stock for food and contact allergies, hypothyroidism and deafness. This is a breeder-screening recommendation, not evidence that these conditions are common, severe or inevitable in Portuguese Podengos.

The Royal Kennel Club currently reports no breed-specific points of concern requiring special attention from judges beyond matters covered routinely by its breed standard. That does not mean the breed has no health problems. Ask a breeder which tests are appropriate for the particular variety and lines, request the relevant results, and discuss any individual dog’s health with a veterinarian.
Life expectancy
Current AKC profiles list an expected lifespan of 10–15 years for the Grande and Medio and 12–15 years for the Pequeno. These are profile estimates, not promises for every dog.
Grande, Medio or Pequeno: how to compare them
| Decision factor | What to consider |
|---|---|
| Adult size | Choose based on handling, transport, living space and your ability to manage the dog’s strength and reach. |
| Coat | Smooth is short and dense; wire is rougher, medium length and bearded. Both are natural coats. |
| Working background | Grande was associated with larger quarry; Medio and Pequeno with rabbit hunting and flushing. |
| Exercise and containment | All need activity and mental stimulation; chase instinct makes leash use or secure fencing important. |
| Temperament | Expect intelligence and independence alongside affection; early socialization helps, but individuals differ. |
No source establishes a universally best variety or a reliable breed-wide ranking for health or family suitability. The best fit depends on the particular dog’s temperament, your household and the management you can provide.
