A Whoodle is a cross between a Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier and a Poodle. Because it is not a standardized breed, there is no guaranteed adult size, coat, or temperament. The Poodle parent’s variety and the individual dogs matter; prospective owners should be ready for daily coat care and should not assume a Whoodle is allergy-proof.

What is a Whoodle?

“Whoodle” is a common name for a Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier–Poodle cross. PetMD describes the mix as relatively recent and says it is not an officially recognized breed with a breed standard. Other names listed by PetMD include Wheatendoodle, Sweatenpoo, Wheatenpoo, and Sweatendoodle. Those labels do not establish a uniform type: a Whoodle’s appearance and behavior can vary from dog to dog. PetMD’s Whoodle overview, updated December 20, 2023, is a crossbreed profile, not a formal standard.

The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier was developed in Ireland as an all-purpose farm dog and family companion, according to the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier Club of America. Its breed standard describes the Wheaten parent as a medium-sized, hardy, balanced sporting terrier with a soft, silky, gently waving wheaten coat. That description applies to Wheatens, not every Whoodle.

How big do Whoodles get?

There is no single reliable Whoodle weight range. The Poodle parent may be Toy, Miniature, or Standard, and the cross’s mature size depends on both parent dogs and the individual puppy. PetMD’s 2023 parent-breed figures provide context, not guaranteed Whoodle weights:

Parent breed or variety Weight listed by PetMD What it tells you
Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier 30–40 pounds Parent-breed reference only
Toy Poodle 4–6 pounds Parent-breed reference only
Miniature Poodle 10–15 pounds Parent-breed reference only
Standard Poodle 40–70 pounds Parent-breed reference only

Ask which Poodle variety was used and about the actual parents’ adult sizes. Even that information is an estimate rather than a promise of a puppy’s final weight. PetMD

What do Whoodles look like?

A Whoodle may have a soft, wavy or curly coat, but there is no Whoodle standard that guarantees coat texture, color, build, or size. The Wheaten parent standard’s silky, gently waved coat describes that breed alone; it should not be treated as a specification for the cross. Ask to see the puppy’s parents and, when possible, adult relatives to get a better sense of likely variation.

What is a Whoodle’s temperament like?

PetMD describes Whoodles as energetic and intelligent. Those are useful expectations, not guarantees: inherited traits and an individual dog’s experiences shape behavior. The Wheaten parent club characterizes Wheatens as bright, active, charming, people-oriented dogs that need daily exercise and close companionship. Its care guidance emphasizes early socialization, consistent training, and raising the dog in the home. SCWTCA breed information and SCWTCA care handout.

Training and daily activity

Plan for regular physical activity and mental engagement, using consistent, positive training. Ask about each parent’s energy, behavior, and response to training rather than assuming that a cross will inherit a particular temperament. PetMD notes that exuberant behavior, including jumping, can overwhelm small children; this is a practical reason to supervise interactions and teach children how to behave around dogs, not a blanket judgment about family suitability.

How much grooming does a Whoodle need?

Coat care can be demanding, especially if the individual dog’s coat is soft and curly. PetMD says that coat can mat and recommends brushing and combing daily, working down to the skin rather than grooming only the surface. Professional grooming may be needed every four to eight weeks, depending on the coat and the trim. A brush and grooming comb can support the daily routine, but they do not replace professional care when it is needed. PetMD

Check the coat regularly for tangles, particularly in areas where friction or movement can encourage mats. If mats develop, PetMD advises against cutting them out with scissors because the skin can be cut along with the hair. Ask a groomer or veterinarian for a safe way to handle a difficult mat.

Are Whoodles hypoallergenic?

No dog can be guaranteed hypoallergenic. PetMD notes that both parent breeds are known as low-allergen breeds and that some people with allergies may find a Whoodle suitable, but that does not make the cross allergy-proof. The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier Club of America likewise says dogs are not truly hypoallergenic and recommends visiting both adult dogs and puppies to see how a family member with allergies responds. A visit can help assess an individual reaction, but cannot promise that living with the dog will be symptom-free.

What health issues and lifespan should you know about?

PetMD gives parent-breed lifespan figures of 12–14 years for Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers and 10–18 years for Poodles, and describes a Whoodle lifespan as expected within that broad range. These figures come from the parent breeds; they are not a Whoodle-specific lifespan study. PetMD

Protein-losing enteropathy (PLE) is a condition to discuss because the Wheaten parent is predisposed to it, according to PetMD. The available crossbreed profile does not give a Whoodle-specific prevalence estimate, so it would be misleading to predict an individual dog’s risk from the mix label alone. Ask about health history in the parent dogs and speak with your veterinarian about signs to watch for and appropriate care.

The Wheaten parent club’s 2018 welcome flyer recommends annual blood work and urinalysis for Wheatens. That is club advice for the parent breed, not a universal screening protocol for Whoodles. Your veterinarian can recommend screening based on the individual dog’s history and health. SCWTCA welcome flyer.

What should you ask before choosing a Whoodle?

Since the cross has no fixed standard, focus on the actual dog and its parents. For a puppy, ask the breeder; for an adult dog, ask the shelter, rescue, or previous caregiver what is known. Useful questions include:

  • Size: Which Poodle variety is the parent, and what are both parents’ adult sizes?
  • Coat: What is the dog’s current coat texture, how quickly does it tangle, and what grooming routine has worked?
  • Energy and behavior: How much daily activity do the dog and its parents need? How do they respond to training and behave around children?
  • Health: What health history is available for the dog and both parents? What does the veterinarian recommend for this individual?
  • Allergies: If allergies are a concern, can the family member spend time with the individual dog and adult dogs from the same line?

These questions help set realistic expectations; they are not a formal Whoodle scoring system. The best fit depends on whether the individual dog’s needs match your household’s time, grooming capacity, and experience.
