Male dogs have nipples, just like female dogs. Their number, color and visibility vary, and most are a normal part of a dog’s anatomy.
What do male dogs’ nipples look like?
They are small bumps attached to the skin, arranged in rows along the abdomen from the groin toward the chest. They may be skin-colored or pigmented. On a short-coated dog they may be easy to spot; on a long-coated dog, you may need to part the fur. Male and female nipples generally look similar, though a nursing mother’s nipples may become more pronounced. The American Kennel Club (AKC) says dogs tend to have 8 to 10 nipples, but some have more or fewer; that figure is not a rule for every dog.

Canine mammary glands are located on the chest and abdomen, according to the Merck Veterinary Manual.
Why do male dogs have nipples?
The AKC explains that male and female animals begin development with nipples. Because male nipples generally cause few problems, there has not been strong selection pressure to eliminate them. This is an explanatory account, not a specific experimental finding.
#1 Best Overall
Is that bump a nipple, a tick, or something else?
A nipple is part of the skin and has no legs; a tick has legs. But other skin bumps, such as skin tags or growths, can also look like nipples, so appearance alone may not settle the question. Don’t tug at an uncertain bump: pulling can hurt your dog or cause bleeding. If you cannot identify it confidently, ask a veterinarian.
When should a veterinarian check a nipple or lump?
Contact your veterinarian if a nipple is much larger than the others, has discharge, looks or feels abnormal, or has a lump beneath it. These signs warrant an examination; they do not by themselves mean the dog has cancer.
Rank #2
Canine mammary tumors occur most often in non-spayed females or females spayed late in life, and are described as extremely rare in male dogs, according to the Merck Veterinary Manual’s pet-owner page, last updated September 2024. That page gives no male-specific risk percentage, and a lump should not be assumed to be a tumor.

No. Neutering is surgery to remove both testicles, as described by VCA; it is not nipple removal.
