The best Yorkie haircut is the one that matches your dog’s coat and the brushing routine you can realistically maintain. Choose a shorter pet trim for easier upkeep, or keep the coat long for a flowing, show-inspired look—then give your groomer a reference photo and exact length requests for the body, legs, face, ears and tail.
How to choose a Yorkie haircut
Yorkshire Terriers have a naturally long, straight, flowing coat. The United Kennel Club standard allows the body hair to be trimmed to floor length for easier movement, but pet owners can choose much shorter styles. The Yorkshire Terrier Club of America notes that coats may be silky, cottony, woolly or even double-layered; texture changes how quickly hair tangles and mats.
Use these four questions before booking:
- How much brushing can you provide between appointments?
- Do you want a practical, short pet trim or long, flowing hair?
- Should the face look rounded and full, or neat and closely framed?
- Which areas need special attention—eyes, feet, sanitary hair, ears or tail?
Haircut names are informal. “Puppy cut,” for example, does not have one industry-wide length. Show the groomer a picture and describe the target lengths instead of relying on a label alone.

Long or show-style coat
Long hair shows the breed’s characteristic flow but demands more daily attention. PetMD recommends daily brushing for full-length coats, while the American Kennel Club describes regular brushing and different bathing routines for pet and show coats.
Coat texture changes the workload
Silky, cottony, woolly and double coats do not behave identically. A style that stays manageable on one Yorkie may mat quickly on another, so let the groomer assess texture and condition before selecting a length.

How often a Yorkie needs grooming
The AKC advises trimming every four to six weeks and brushing several times a week, or daily, to prevent tangles and mats. PetMD gives a professional haircut interval of six to eight weeks and says full-length coats need daily brushing. These are guidance ranges, not guarantees: faster growth, a finer or woollier texture, outdoor activity and the chosen haircut can move the appointment earlier or later.
Keep the schedule flexible. If a comb catches repeatedly, mats are forming close to the skin, or the coat is dirty and damp, contact the groomer rather than waiting for the next calendar date.

At-home tools and safe brushing
The AKC lists a pin brush, metal-toothed comb and slicker brush as useful Yorkie coat-care tools. A simple appointment checklist
- Take a current photo of your Yorkie’s coat and choose a style reference.
