Yes. Some “blue-green algae” blooms—more accurately, cyanobacteria—produce toxins that can make a dog critically ill or kill it within hours to days. Keep your dog out of water under an advisory or showing bloom warning signs, prevent drinking and scavenging, and rinse immediately with clean tap water after any possible contact. If your dog becomes ill, call a veterinarian at once rather than waiting for symptoms to worsen.
What blue-green algae is—and why it can be dangerous
Cyanobacteria are microscopic organisms that naturally occur in water. When conditions are warm, slow-moving and nutrient-rich, they can multiply rapidly into a harmful algal bloom (HAB). Some blooms release toxins; others may not. Cyanobacteria cause most HABs in freshwater, although harmful blooms can also occur in salt or brackish water.
Exposure can happen when a dog drinks contaminated water, swims or splashes in it, eats algae or contaminated fish, mouths dead animals, inhales droplets, or licks contaminated material from its coat. Toxins may be in the organisms themselves or dispersed through the water.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) describes a steep dose-response curve in dogs: up to 90% of a lethal dose may produce no clinical signs. That figure is a clinical observation—not a mortality rate and not a safe exposure limit. A dog that looks normal may still need urgent advice after a credible exposure.

How to judge whether water is unsafe
Do not rely on appearance alone. A bloom or its toxins can be below the surface or otherwise difficult to see, and harmful toxins may be present when no obvious bloom is visible. Check the current local or state water advisory before taking your dog to a lake, river, stream or shoreline, and choose the conservative option whenever water is questionable.
Warning signs you can see or smell
- Unusual blue, green, brown or red discoloration
- Foam, scum, floating mats, paint-like streaks or slimy surfaces
- An unpleasant or unusually strong smell
- Dead fish or other dead animals along the shore
These signs are reasons to leave the area, but their absence does not establish that the water is safe.

Preventing exposure on walks and trips
- Check advisories first. Look up the relevant local or state harmful-bloom or swimming notice for the specific waterway and date of your visit.
- Keep your dog out of suspect water. Do not allow swimming, wading, splashing, shoreline play or drinking where an advisory applies or warning signs are present.
- Bring safe drinking water. Offer water from a clean container rather than allowing your dog to drink from a lake, river, pond or stream.
- Stop scavenging. Prevent eating algae, fish or other animals washed ashore, and avoid grazing around questionable water.
- Control access at the shoreline. A well-fitted leash gives you time to interrupt a dash into the water; it does not make contaminated water safe.
A portable bottle of clean water can make an immediate rinse possible outdoors. These are convenience aids only: they do not neutralize toxins or replace avoidance, a thorough rinse or veterinary care.
What to do if your dog swam in or touched algae
- Remove the dog from the water and prevent licking. Keep the coat and paws out of the mouth while you prepare to rinse.
- Put on gloves if available. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends gloves while rinsing, because the material on the coat or in the water may also expose people.
- Rinse immediately and thoroughly with clean tap water. Use a sink, shower, hose or spigot. Flush the coat, paws and any other contacted areas until the visible material is gone.
- Contact a veterinarian promptly if any illness appears or the exposure was substantial. Tell the clinic where and when contact occurred, whether the dog drank water or ate algae or fish, and what you observed.
Do not wait for a visible bloom, a confirmed toxin, or severe symptoms before seeking advice. Do not substitute induced vomiting, food, milk, supplements or other home measures for professional care.

Symptoms and how quickly they can appear
Signs may begin in as little as 15 minutes or as late as several days after exposure, according to EPA guidance. CDC notes that an animal can become very sick or die within hours to days after swallowing cyanobacterial toxins. A symptom-free interval therefore does not prove that exposure was harmless.
| Possible sign | What owners may notice |
|---|---|
| Digestive or general illness | Vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, low energy or unexplained illness |
| Drooling and mouth changes | Excessive drooling or foaming at the mouth |
| Neurologic problems | Stumbling, falling, weakness, tremors, loss of coordination, paralysis, convulsions or seizures |
| Breathing problems | Difficulty breathing |
| Other effects | Possible liver or kidney illness and skin reactions |
If any of these signs follows possible contact, call a veterinarian immediately. Seizures, collapse or breathing difficulty are emergencies requiring immediate transport while you follow the clinic’s instructions.

Why rapid veterinary advice matters
CDC states that there are no known antidotes to these toxins and no established treatment that owners can provide at home. Prompt veterinary care is supportive and may save the animal’s life. There are also no clinically available diagnostic tests that reliably detect HAB toxins in animals, so the veterinarian may need to combine the exposure history, examination and tests used to rule out similar illnesses.
For that reason, provide precise information: the waterway, date and approximate time, what the water looked or smelled like, whether the dog drank or ate anything, and when symptoms began. Do not delay care while trying to identify the exact cyanobacterium or toxin.
